The flashiest 'NOW PLAYING' stand

- No one really needs a 'now playing' stand or a music visualiser - but you might want this $200 device that combines both into one almost useful and very flashy object .
Available from petrudesign.com
This video is not affiliated, I'm not on commission, I haven't been paid to make this video, I bought the record stand....BUT...I also got an additional free updated version - hence I used the 'Paid Promotion tag'.
TH-cam states "If you accepted anything of value from a third party to make your video, you must let us know. We'll show viewers a message telling them that your video contains paid promotion." - so I ticked the appropriate box to indicate 'Yes I accepted something of value from a third party".
This video is not an endorsement - make your own mind up.

I'm just happy it doesn't require an app or server connection. An actual, complete, self-standing product for once!
EXACTLY! *_I'm just glad that it does NOT have WiFi or some other privacy-invading protocol!_* #keepitsimple
no doubt
I got sveral VU meter designs like that, one that is a 4 foot tall VU meter or pattern light
Can't wait for the IOT trend to collapse. Absolute rubbish.
I also like that it has USB-C as well.
My shrubbery is just full of album covers. This will be great to have.
Dont tell the knights who go Ni that
The knights who .... till recently said ni
The knights who now say LP
Are any of them Green Day, Sound Garden, or Bush albums? 😊
It is a good shrubbery. I like the laurels particularly.
Thanks again for the AMAZING video! And thank you to everyone for your kind words about our device, we are here to answer any questions you may have!
I like the idea and the device. Perhaps an other knob controlling the speed of the visuals would be a good idea. Going super slow as well. As if you listen soft slow music, you do not want to have flashy lights, but something that fits the music perfectly.
Just a weird idea for V3: RFID patch you slip in the record jacket and a DAC in the device that auto plays the digital file of the record with possibly a vinyl audio filter.
Awesome product and design, but I've got two questions:
1. Those two prongs holding the jacket up. I feel they might me a bit too short to prevent jackets from warping over time. I'd probably be more comfortable with slightly longer prongs and maybe even with rubber or other soft material at the top, where the cover rests.
2. It's not much, but I believe I can see the delay with the naked eye. Have you measured it?
None of these would prevent me from getting one, is one of the coolest visualizers I've seen in years. Great work!!
This looks so cool, I'll definitely be getting one in the next couple of weeks . . .
Two quick questions - is there a way to get inside* (without destroying the case too much) as I'd like to swap the mic for a mono jack input ? And how long would it take to deliver to the UK ?
*I'm guessing the best way would be through the little 3D printed mic holder ?
Does your device do any sort of Automatic Gain Control or Dynamic Range Compression? My biggest complaint with many stand-along visualizers and color organs is having to constantly be jumping up to tweak the gain/sensitivity to deal with louder and quieter songs. EDIT: additionally, since you're using a mic as the audio input, without AGC turning the volume up or down (from my chair using a remote) would affect the visualizer.
Straight away the intro was funny. You seem to be the only person on the whole of TH-cam that uses the paid promotion properly and fully transparent and honest about it.
him and tom scott too
@@rawr51919fair point. Tom Scott is properly decent and thinks about the impact of his videos, to the people, places and things he speaks about.
You can tell both Techmoan and Tom Scott are both really decent, genuinely nice people.
The majority of youtubers I follow do this. It stands out more to me when they don't
@@rawr51919but tom scott sucks so who cares
While he takes alot of them, rdavidr also very cleary states every time he was sent stuff for free
The "ohhh yeah, take it off" when it comes to peeling the plastic off screens always gets me, lol, I love it.
The visualizer on this one is really satisfying compared to a lot of these screen-based ones. Must be quality programming making the difference.
the smooth brightness control makes me think this type is also not using oldtimey 8-bit smartLEDs. Maybe they're using 16-bit types, or they got a special ASIC to drive dumb LEDs at a really high rate.
@@mycosysNah, these are individual LEDs. Probably modules used for high quality digital signage.
agreed
Since mat was complaining that the camera didn't capture the color well on camera, my bet is a polarized filter on front of the led
@@gajomau Polarization filter and/or a diffuser per segment would make most sense to me.
I still love the "take it off..." snippet and still get a kick out of knowing there's some guy out there who hates it!!! I honestly look forward to it in videos and it always gets a laugh out of me!
I hate it. Not quite sure why. Perhaps I was traumatised by a stripper as a child. Probably one dressed as a clown.
I was very reassured to hear it was “filled with electronic stuff”...this is an exacting requirement I have when buying pretty much anything 😅
What, even fruit?🤣🤣
Technical Specifications:
Height: Yes
Weight: Only a moment
Electronic stuff: Chock Full

Back in 1978, I was immensely proud of my Pulsar Zero 3000. It had four (4 !) channels of sound to light. The cutting edge ! 😁
Your Saturday uploads have become my middle aged bloke equivalent of Saturday morning kids TV. 😂
That is exactly how I feel, glad I'm not the only one.
As a fellow middle-aged bloke (who was never allowed to watch Saturday morning kids TV) I wholeheartedly agree!
It's a product that no-one needs
Except that we all need a little joy in our lives
And that brings me joy
It's a product that I need.
"Its made of wood with some electronic stuff inside" gave me a good chuckle
I could see this being beneficial as a visible audio sensor for a Deaf person. If it's moving, somebody's at the door or trying to get your attention. (Yes, I'm well aware of light-flashing doorbells for the Deaf, but they only serve the singular purpose.)
+ this looks a lot nicer.
I'm was thinking of this aspect for myself too. I hear well enough, but when I have headphones on [esp. noise cancelling] and there is something happening in the outside environment [[like door knocks] I am oblivious. If the lights on here start flashing, I know something is up.
That's a great use case
@@Willam_J how would it wake deaf people?
@@Willam_J That feature was added to Android back in 2020 :)
@Techmoan I’m always thrilled at how thoughtful and respectful you are of everyone you interact with. I would take a guess that 99% or more of TH-camrs wouldn’t even think of the “manufacturer”, let alone them being a “small Mom & Pop shop”, to reach out to them to let them know you’re making a video of their product and to expect an influx of orders. Just one more reason I appreciate the person that is you. Keep up the great work!
Also, between the two units, the Micro-B one’s display appears to have “fuller squares”, and they appear to be possibly “less focused” (maybe a lower quality display?), than the new USB-c one. From the video, I think that I more enjoy the Micro-B one. Am I making it up or is it possibly due to the camera angle? Thanks again!
i actually thought i noticed the same thing about the display.
Nice editing on the unboxing, and a great funny intro!
Man, if they could build in Shazam-style track recognition for the display info…
Sounds cool and easy enough to implement, but I also dread having (yet another) device listening to stuff going on in my home
@@annelisemeier283I'm getting tired of listening to you snoring at night, so I'm officially decommissioning the listening devices I've installed under your pillow.
That was my very first thought. Would be amazing to see what was playing on the radio without fumbling for my phone.
$200 is actually really good for the level of quality here. And it's not just build but design and execution. This is absolutely a killer gift, from the look of it. Always nice when you find something like this!
I bought one of these when he first posted about it on Reddit, and it's a constant source of minor delight.
If, like me, you find the metal rods are just a smidge too short, and cause your records to rest at an angle that, say, catches glare from the ceiling lights, you can purchase any 8mm steel craft rods at your desired length and they will slot right in.
What’s your ‘go-to’ visualisation mode?
@@Techmoan My favorite is the color-cycling visualizer that you describe as a 'fireplace.' It's so soothing!
What a great product. No app, no multiple cables, no subscription model, no major configuration, analog controls and aesthetically pleasing.
I love crossover episodes. The fact that you’re playing the Planet X3 record (by The 8-Bit Guy) makes me smile.
OMG Mat - I had lost all my LP record sleeves over the years - FOUND THEM all in the shrubbery! Brilliant! Bender loves visualizers. Thanks!
I am a fraction of 1%, I guess. I always love your flashy/superfluous equipment videos. While I *really* wish this had a line level in instead of just a mic, everything else about it is pretty much exactly something I can use.
The gent making them seems very open to suggestions! The original version of the unit (the one I own) had the mini-USB port on the side, right next to the microphone. Thanks to feedback he now offers the rear-port option, which Mat has here.
_"While I really wish this had a line level in instead of just a mic"_
Yep, my first thought too ! I'm going to get one regardless, and if I can get in without destroying the case (as it looks so nice) I'll whip out the soldering iron and a few resistors and replace the little mic with a line in socket.
I'd buy one if it had a line level and was considerably cheaper. Maybe a matte plastic shell model with fewer display modes for a lower price point, like $50-55 USD.
@@charlesswansonii9319 Fewer display modes (just coding) wouldn't save any money at all . . . if you really wanted a cheaper option (and this is something that would be easy for the makers to do) buying this in kit form would be the way to go . . . you solder it all together, then make or 3D print your own case.
@@mycosysit's not OLED, just a normal LED matrix
I like flashy too. My mom had a zenith stereo when i was 9 years old back in 1979. It had the red and green level lights on it. I thought that was awesome. I stared at them so much, my eyes went bonkers.
😀 You’re Marty Feldman and I claim my £5
I'll be forever in love with Winamp, it's got unbelievable visualisations!
@ejuicevaper I'm just so happy this player still exists and gets updated. Seriously, the viz is out of this world.
Yes!
And I loved Cthugha, from the original standalone.
It really whips the llama's ass.
@@FirstLast-vr7es Baahhh...!
My daily go to with mp3 playback. VLC for some reason does not work right with Win10 so more reason to stick with it. Winamp gave me no issues over 20 years with all the operating systems and always loved the skins and visualizations.
This would be great for parties or small gatherings. Fit and finish is very nice. The $200 price point is also very fair, especially for something that isn't being mass-produced.
Genius ad. Finally quality visualizer. I really like it.
I like this one a lot, and the simplicity of its design - I DO wish the width of it was the same as an LP though, for aesthetic reasons.
I use my LP covers for skinning up big fat spliffs on.
It's what we did back in the 70's.
Yes but they HAD to be either Tubular Bells or DSOTM for that purpose. That was the law back then.
really love the use of the BBC's backing music in this video, hope this becomes a bit of a regular thing for this channel!
I like that 'heat signature' mode. Very neat.
I’m not sure if we’re talking about the same mode, but this looks a lot like a waterfall spectrum visualization.
@@0xbenediktyes, you are right
@0xbenedikt
Either a waterfall or a spectrograph. You can use them in clever ways, too. *The Venetian Snares* album *Songs About My Cats* ends with the track *Look* , lots of funky space noises but if you put it through a spectrograph you see pictures of his cats.
@@jameswalker199 Interesting. hadn’t heard about that yet.
Way better than putting the sleeve in a bush. I really like this. Simplistic and but gets the job done. The real wood is a welcome touch.
not even 2 minutes in and i'm cracking up! love your humor
This channel costs me more money than I want to admit 😊 I've ordered this now and somehow, this is my favorite video of the year so far.
YT should ban him ! lol

I know the feeling.. I have a living room full of tech I purchased after watching Techmoan videos.
Same here. Something else I didn't know I needed until I watched Techmoan!!😂😂
Actually that's quite a cool gizmo. $199 is a little steep but it does appear to be well made. Funnily it reminded me of something that would have turned up on a 1970s sci-fi show on TV (Buck Rogers or Battlestar Galactica) before you even mentioned Star Trek. I quite like the fact that, for once, it's not made in China (although the internal components possibly are).
My plants thank you from the bottom of their roots. Never knew i needed this in my life but now i know.
A very cool product that I would definitely consider if I could afford the $200 price tag.
Lost count of the number of rain damaged album covers - my saviour has arrived😉 Lovely product and great video, as ever👍
I love the Marshall Amp knobs. My "Now Playing" stand is a picture frame ledge from Ikea. I have two of them, one above the other. I used to put all of my recent purchases on them so I knew what I still had to listen to before filing them in my collection.
I've never seen anyone else that listens to Jazz Spastiks!! I found them years ago (from The Product) and their discography became part of my being and is a huge inspiration for my work today. Love to see that you own the record!
Oh they're still around, they're the ones who vote every four years... You can tell because of the crayon and the dribble.
Duh-mocracy, Drumknott. Always a good decision.
Thanks, I was wondering about the album :]
I love these kinds of things, and I'm STILL extremely happy with my BDS PP-131 2U (similar to yours, but mine's double height) Spectrum/Frequency Analyzer. 31 frequencies, 30 LED high, plenty of display modes and more. Yeah it might be more of a 'Pro'/DJ unit, but it's a well built, solid, and quite useful unit to 'See' the music. I've often just put some 'Chillaxing' music on, and spent hours watching the bars rise and fall at each frequncy along with what I hear 😏
😎🇬🇧
looks like they have done a good job lining up the grain around the edges. thats not the easiest thing to do and shows the care put into it.
I do wish there was an option to pipe a line input in or have a line level passthrough. I love flashy colorful things :D
I think I would prefer a line in for the music source, the mic would just pick up everything in the room. It's not a problem when you're listening to music on your own but not as good for a dinner party. Resorting to putting your album cover in a bush in the garden made me spit my coffee out 😂
LOL at the beginning Techmoan moves about just like the muppets.
And, as always, thanks for the excellent content! Your videos bring me a lot of joy.
This immediately made me think of a 32x8 pixel WS2812 "smart led" display driven by a fork or at least a very similar implementation of the "WLED" visualization software running on an ESP32 microcontroller, but instead of configuring everything via wifi and browser it's got presets and the rotary encoder in hardware. This custom enclosure and presentation is much nicer than anything i've DIYed with these components though🙂
This is one of the most gorgeous and dead-simple visualizers I've ever seen! It's worthy of all the promotion you can give it!
It's really nice with the '70s woodgrain design, looks cool, and all, but it costs as much as my whole vintage hi-fi setup, complete with a Kenwood micro hi-fi, large Pioneer 3-way speakers, Technics turntable, JVC tape deck, Yamaha amp, and that weird Audiosonic CD player with the funky door, that looks like a meat slicer.
I think I'll just get one of those basic ones that can hold the vinyl cover... I didn't even know those exist until now, and indeed would come in handy to put the cover somewhere during playback.
I like audio visualizers. I remember the first gen playstation had a feature when you played music CDs on it. You had a audio visualizer and you could change modes. It was pretty nice 👍
The PS3 has visualizers too and I would always sit and watch them while listening to music.
Indeed. Everything else after that's got nothing, even the PS2 (although it still played audio CDs but no longer any visualizers).
Even some games with sound tests built into them (Ace Combat 2, Tales of Series).
I thought it might be linked to Shazam or something and display the music title. After all, its called 'now playing'
As always, thanks for another in a long line of useful, entertaining and informative videos!
I really like this stand/display. It’s so satisfying to see wood and real controls.
6:35 I appreciate the flow of one display into another. Amazing attention to detail
Wow I'm never going back to the bush after this
Thank you for your wonderful video.
The Smart holder hit all my buttons!! So cool, self contained, and evolving.
I ordered it last night right after watching your video, said one left in stock…
It is a perfect device for people my age, 75. It combines craftsmanship, sustainability, handmade with wood, and has cool flashing lights!!
Thank you for your channel!

Really lovely diffused led matrix. Absolutely not something I'd buy (sadly don't have a real hifi, CDs or records any more!) but if I did, then I'd definitely have something like it. Well done Petru - it takes real skill not to go OTT with the flashy bling, and you've got it dead right here!!
As for Mat @Techmoan.... As if you need a reason to buy more gadgets for your hifi!! Existence is enough isn't it?! 😂😂
What a neat idea! I ordered one thanks for the heads up Techmoan!
Every Saturday morning I enjoy your videos over a cup of coffee here in NYC.
Love your approach to tech, your calm mannerisms and your accent - brings back memories of my life up north.
Thank you.
Probably a matrix of ws2812b or ws2812c LEDs, they can be extremely pleasant with good software and display hundreds of thousands of colors
Actual wood. Analog knobs. Not a single touch screen in sight. Amazing.
Also, that Planet X3 soundtrack. Equally amazing!
lovely piece of kit, thanks
Ordered! After all your videos covering mid-to-trash visualizers this one finally hit all the right notes for me. Going to look great with my setup. Thanks for the heads up!
Mat, did you have to time the power on for both devices to get the Now Playing to appease r to move between them :) I love this attention to detail for what was basically a filler shot. You are one of my favorite channels on TH-cam just for that reason. Appreciate you sir!
If it could have only had a built-in clock or ability to display other things, like the La Metric, I see you still have one there behind you, mine just recently died after a few years of service.
Suddenly, as so often happens after watching your videos, I NEED this so much!
What a fantastic product! My bro in law is going to LOVE it so much. Incredible
I think it's the only modern visualizer that doesn't look like sh. Well done.
As usual, i see something i like, and the price then turns me away
Yep, if it was £50 I might consider it
💯 I am the type of person who will be obsessed with this now until I have one. Love music visualizers and eternally sad that they've laregely been forgotten. Glad we still have a modern option.
Oh wow what a beautiful piece of kit.
2 notes: 1) No "Ooh, yeah"? 2) How do the knobs feel?
1- I used the usual film peeling tune - a different section perhaps.
2 - Fine, nothing amazing, functional.
I like the concept, but i feel like it could do with a higher pixel resolution.
I have to say, aesthetically it's spot on! I'll note that I've only just got past the intro, so while this isn't anything I'd buy, the construction and UI look pretty sweet!
I saw this when it was first shown in the vinyl subreddit. So glad they started making them, and that you got one and made a video!
Id buy one if it had a brushed aluminium finish, to match the rest of my audio setup
this is about as useful as a DVD rewinder
Oh man, FINALLY! My bushes are dying because all the LP sleeves block the sunlight from the leaves...THANK YOU!!! lol
An alternative at last! Since my neighbour destroyed my bush, I've had nowhere to keep my covers...
I remember when my now ex-wife told me that our neighbour had destroyed her bush. We divorced soon afterwards.
I leave my record sleeves inside the dishwasher while playing a record, who leaves their sleeves on the leaves? weirdos...
This device totally needs a wifi connection & access to a song identification service like Shazam. It would be awesome showing the track details on the screen.
Love this. I am considering buying one.
I love gadgets like this, but £150 is unaffordable in these present times sadly.
Cor blimey
I like and want that, but unfortunately not $200's worth of like and want.
Two hundred dollarydoos?!
I'll think about it.
*New hi-fi equipment be like:*
It's cool that it actually syncs/agrees with the other visualizer in his HiFi setup.
A record stand that visualises the music, NICE! That music you played came from YouFact Tech. There’s 2 we know, but there’s one we DON’T. Please let us know what they all are. Anyway back to the product. I’d like to see an app controlled version of this music visualiser/record stand coming out sometime, but as it STANDS, it’s a good one we’ve got for now
I mean it's nice, quite like it.............but not for about 160 quid! Canny vid though, thanks!
Having the mode being a notched dial which intrinsically, physically, shows the range of modes possible, lets you seek back and forth to one rapidly that you can remember by its rough angle, and remembers where it was is so, so much better than "here is a single button to cycle through everything" on all the cheaply-made ones.
Just so you know, I'm one of the 99.999 repeat % who still enjoys your productions.
That’s a beautiful hifi system. This is the sort of device that might interest my son thank you for sharing.
I like this!! May get one for my vintage audio music room.
The paid promo part reminded me of the antics of the "you suck at cooking" channel, and gave me a chuckle this morning. Thank you.
Love the WOPR-style ambient display!
Do you want to play a game?
"So you end up leaving it in a bush" 🤣🤣 Excellente!
I like the Dynatron style knobs used and woodgrain effect to fit in with vintage equipment.
and filled with electronic stuff... classic love it what a sales pitch.
Just ordered one, can't wait to get it!
That's a quality visualizer, and I love the vintage Radio Shack type styling.
i love the futuristic retro look !
