Toronto facing $26B infrastructure shortfall to maintain service over next decade

  • A report adopted by Toronto City Council’s Executive Committee today says the city is staring down a $26 billion shortfall when it comes to maintaining its infrastructure in a state of good repair (SOGR) over the next decade.
"That's what keeps me up at night," Mayor Olivia Chow told reporters ahead of the Executive Committee meeting Thursday.
Regulations passed by the province several years ago require Ontario municipalities to have council-approved strategic asset management plans which are updated at least every five years. The plans must also anticipate service levels.

Approximately 9 months ago a car hit a lightpost and bikepost near me.
About a month ago they replaced the bikepost utilizing shoddy concrete (the bike post could be pushed over if one wished too, as it is not even properly anchored).
    The lightpost?
    A year from now?

What kind of loser looks at a street sign that says "Dundas" and starts thinking about someone named Dundas from over a hundred years ago? To me and to lots of other sensible people, Dundas is just the name of a street, and my mind doesn't go towards thinking about Dundas the person. Also, you can change a street name but that doesn't change what happened in the past, so what is the real point in changing the street name other than wasting money?

The $26 billion shortfall Canada is seeing for infrastructure needs is significant. The funding of unnecessary wars, control of resources, and country currencies is concerning. Many people are receiving government assistance, and no matter how much more money they tax, there will always be a shortfall. The costs of goods and services and the purchasing power of the Canadian dollar diminish or don't make up for the fact that a $5 bill, for example, doesn't change daily with the change in the value of the actual currency. There's no incentive to owning a piece of paper that really has no value. 😢

I know how much goes to the city for each new sale, and every single new unit pays property taxes...that's a ton of money...where is it going? Why most politicians including Olivia Chow always talk about the problems and with no solutions? Most Canadians are already feeling the hardship of putting food on the table everyday. Let us talk about some facts about Canada.
According to Canadian Global Affairs Institute dated April 2024, it says, "Canada standing alone as the only country in the then-31-member Alliance not meeting both NATO investment pledges"
Canada spent just 1.33 per cent of GDP on defence in 2023.
According to Financial Post dated Jan 03, 2024: Canada’s personal tax rates are amongst the highest on Earth.
According to Statista dated Feb 2, 2024, Canada has one of the lowest population densities in the world.
More facts: So far, there are no extraordinary mega structures built or being built in Canada. We do not even have a working submarine that is fit for military services.
Even our prime minister's airplane was recently stuck in India because of lacking of maintennance and spare part. What a shame!
Most government services have been cut to minimum. Canadians can't even leave messages on their auto-answer phone system. Thousands of people are homeless, with no family doctor, with no dental care, drug addicted, mentally stressed, violent, etc.
Can someone ask this very simple question - Where has all the tax money gone?

The condo developers are running this city, making millions and not paying their share of infrastructure costs. How in the world can so many of these projects by constructed, with the city crying poor every year? These
condos have added 100's of thousands of people to the downtown area over the last 20 years, but the city
must provide all local services, parks, roads, etc. And the Province is not keeping up with funding for Hospitals,
and schools for this increased population, a total failure in leadership. I wouldn't let one more condo tower be
built until they squeeze more money out of these developers.
