Nice covereage! There are two areas of steam nowadays. There is a small steam vent in the town near the St Ignatius Cemetery. Another area of steam is just to the east of Centralia off of Big Mine Run Road where the steam emitting from the cliffs can be seen from the road. I did some carbon monoxide tests at both steam vent areas and recorded no CO. This means it is either residual heat or the fire is far away. Too far to record any CO.
No innovative attempt to secure this ready energy source? Or is it a case of ‘if it can’t be hyper efficient and economical at that, then don’t bother’? Surely (?) a matrix of water pipes would return a decent ammount of energy through 250 years!!
Got similar in uk - near Stoke on trent - - been burning for decades - can still see it
Didn't they extinguish this a few years back?
Crazy to think the fire can burn for another 200 years
I went here without knowing it's significance! Sad to hear you can't go anymore
The movie/game “Silent hill” was based off this story. Really eerie watching this but it kinda makes me wanna watch the movie again
just the movie apparently
Game was not inspired by it
Toyama, main game Desiigner even said that they made the it up and was no inspiration for it

This is actually pretty crazy, considering I live in the US I’m surprised I haven’t heard about this yet in my 28 years of life 😂
