I have to respectfully disagree. I go to western governors university and I love it. One of the biggest reasons is if you are really on top of your school work you can get whole years or semesters worth of work done in one semester. The first year that I was at the school I finished 8 classes in a 6 month term. essentially I got a semester free. Tuition is only 3500 and you get 6 months to get as much done as possible. The second reason why I have to disagree is because of how fast the program can be completed if you are on top of your school work. Originally I was supposed to graduate in 2023, but I will be graduating this year after just 2 years of being in school for my 4 year bachelors degree. Another thing that is great about my program is that I get certifications within my course of study as a part of my program. When I graduate I will have more than just a degree, I will have the skills necessary for my field. There are many positives that over shadow the cons that you outline in your video because the whole "social" aspect of going to a traditional college is just not that important. When I went to a brick and mortar school I hated it and found that it was not for me. I love the program that I am in because of the challenge from the classes that I am in as well and noticing the relevance of subject matter being taught to me.
I actually do a hybrid in a way. I go to college for physics, but have all of my undergrad credit classes online such as your diversity or arts credit, as they tend to be easy and most people taking them are taking them as those are undergrad requirements no matter the degree. So I do most of my degree stuff on campus and other stuff online
The only reason I personally see the need to get an online grad degree or any grad degree on location is if you are working for a company and would like to climb some ladders/make a higher salary or if you are aiming for an occupation or job that requires more credentials. I also think that the best way to get through it is if the company you work for offers tuition reimbursement. Otherwise, you're at risk of experiencing a horror story.
I decided to get an accredited online degree from a public university because I'm 27, work full time, and have a lot of responsibilities at home that I can't just ignore. I'm over 1,000 miles away from home and can't just quit life. After I served in the US Marines, I developed some medical issues that I need to work on constantly so I really need to sustain my full time employment/benefits. I went to a brick and mortal school, served in the military, and have 11 years of work experience after living in 3 states. So online college works best for me. But I will agree that a traditional setting is important to many people and should be considered. I just strongly oppose the stigma of one being better than the other when it comes from the same assignments, professors, and school. Each just has their own pros and cons that are pretty irrelevant to what will help you most with your career and retirement. My suggestion is to thoroughly look into each school and talk to as many people as you can about the program(s).
1000% agree. The popularity and demand for online degrees is off the chart and growing daily. The standard for the future. In many ways, this video is like 10 years old.
Perhaps it's different in different cities. For years, in Kansas City, a Computer Science degree from DeVry in Computer Science has been like a medical degree from Harvard. I worked in it over 25 years. DeVry has been in KC and well known and respected over 45 years, A totally different concept than University of Phoenix.
In the UK, Open University is highly respected and has been operating as a distance learning university for over 50 years. Some employers respect a degree from there more than a bricks and mortar university, as it shows self motivation and commitment to your field. Also, employers often respect the degree more because most people who study there are working full time or have other commitments that restricted their studying.
I took the sledge hammer and demolished the Like button. You, dear reader, should do the same. Anyway, I did not know anything about online colleges and this was incredibly informative. More importantly, point #3 at: 5:41 and the danger of certificates was pure gold.
And now, 3 years later, this video is pretty much totally outdated and not really relevant to today's online degree programs and you have to learn the facts all over again! Online is the wave!
Liberty University is ACSB accredited. Depending on your major, sometimes certain licenses require a degree from an AACSB accredited school (ei CPA in certain states). So make sure that the ACSB accreditation is good for what you want to do.
Very informative, I generally like all of your videos that I have seen so far. Great information. Just a bit of an issue with your camera focusing on and out repeatedly but well done otherwise!
I remember when an online college was trying to recruit me and called me over & over! & tried to get me to sign up! This was in 2016. I had a feeling the degree wouldn’t hold as much weight! & I backed out! So I’m thankful I didn’t do it!
I am a student at Nexford.org in an MBA online program and it is really a great experience, even though it is a total online non-profit university. I do not know what would be the opinion of recruiters, but I am happy with what I am learning and the communication with teachers and other students are very good.
