Does it make a difference if the trailer/caravan is twin axel? So for example I passed my test is 2012, so can I tow a twin axel caravan when my jeep and caravan both together don't exceed the 3500kg guide lines
They've scrapped towing tests, and I wonder if that is to help clear the backlog of driving tests. They probably figured that towing tests are a statistically irrelevent portion of the population. For once, I applaud the DVSA for their pragmatism! 👍
I sometimes see, for example a range rover or SUV towing a trailer with, say, another SUV the same size as the towing vehicle, so with the weight of the trailer itself it is towing something heavier than itself. I always thought that was illegal but as you say there are licences for towing, so I'm not sure where the law stands on it.
Honestly don’t understand how it all works, does the maximum weight have to include the car that’s towing? Or is it just the total weight of trailer and car being towed? I don’t have any towing license just the car license looking to tow cars
Sorry mate i've only just seen this, it's the weight of the car and the trailer you are towing plus the load. Also the towing vehicle needs to weigh quite a lot to tow a car so the ratios match so would need to be a big 4x4 or a van at a guess
Great video for a simpleton like me I'm still struggling. I passed my test in Jan 2012. So If I bought a VW touareg which can tow 3500kg. Can I legally tow a trailer upto 3500kg with out taking any test ?
Dude you're funny!
Really dry delivery 😂 like, if Jack Dee was a gangster. Well done, keep em coming.
Apppreciate the help as am wanting to tow a trailer for the first time 👌
As always, Very entertaining and informative.
Thanks mate
Best explanation so far

Without brake coupling systems like on big HGV'S
I think they must be braking the law, the car towing needs to weigh a lot more so the maths to add up I think.
