This is not the old soviet architecture. The center of Odesa was built before the soviet union

Yeah it's pretty chill.
When I was there, it wasn't that crowded. I was literally alone at Potemkin stairs. Maybe they all come to Odessa because of Film festival.
Mozart lived from 1756-1791 and Odessa was founded around the time of his death, so no, he was not there. But Odessa was a real boom town in the 19th century and became, I think, the fourth largest city in the Russian empire within a few decades. Most Russians would still claim Odessa as the epicentre of "Novorossija" the newly colonized parts of Russia that were conquered from the Ottoman empire in the 18th century. The affiliation of Odessa with Ukraine is a rather recent development but is fairly firm by now. Either way, if any city in Europe is truly underrated than it is Odessa. I like it like hardly any other city.
May I draw at this occasion your attention to Lviv, another fascinating and underrated city in Ukraine that has way more to offer than the rather unimpressive Chisinau. Well, at least travel vloggers seem to show up in numbers in Chisinau theses days.

@@korn798 Actually not. That was and is the term for the territories conquered by Russia from the Ottoman empire and Odessa was founded by Catharina the great. We have 2019 and any Russian claim on that territory would be unacceptable but history is history.

The country of beautiful people and beautiful city's. Cant wait to go back. My wife is from Odessa. She is a US citizen now, but ukraine by heart. Her parents live just north of the main city of odessa. Will be going to ukraine in 2 weeks for a month.

I was there in 2017 staying by the Opera House on my way to Kiev. A nice relaxed city with historical architecture. I preferred it to Kiev. The Potemkin stairs were closed for repairs and a bit of a let down as just a shipping port at the foot.
Hotel Mozart? Mozart must have stayed while performing in the Odessa opera house .... Mozart (1756-1791). Odessa opera built 1810. Neoclassical Soviet buildings!!! Most of the city was built in the 19th century, and parts in the early decade of the 20th, before the revolution. I wouldn't call it "an ugly city"?! As one English friend, a professor of history, put it, Odessa is like a grand city in the South of France, should there have ever been a grand city in the South of France! It's a gorgeous, French and Italian built city by the sea, of the kind there are very few of in Europe.

Odesa not second largest, in summer time here is a bit more than 1 million. In Kharkiv is about 1,5 million people.

Great videos, you guys should visit Lviv, its the most cultural and historical city in Ukraine much better architecture than in Kiev or anywhere else in Ukraine and restaurants are just amazing

You should have mentioned the monuments to Catherine2 and Duke de Richelieu (both are founders of Odessa, whom everybody knows in the world).
And ofc there a lot of much more interesting cafes and restaurants outside the historical centre.
The founder of Odessa is de Ribas, Richelieu was the third governor(mayor) of Odessa.

I have a photo of mine as a child taken at that place in 1982 and there is a beautiful view of the port and a gorgeous snow-white marine liner behind me.
And now this screen is there… Everyone nowadays have a screen in their pocket, how much more screens and ads do they need?! It is killing our cities…
I only hope that it is a temporary construction for some event.

To be honest, Odessa is one of the cities I never liked. The city is in ruins, urban transport is horrific, and also locals-once they realise that you are a foreigner, they will surely try to deceive you.
Well.... I’m from Odessa , my wife is from Varna. What I have to admit, that Odessa doesn’t have a good major of the city for a very long time in comparison with Varna. That problems, that you mentioned before could be solved very quickly.
Locals are the same as in Varna or in Prague - trying to earn on tourists some money.
