Awesome interview. Bravo Zulu to First Sergeant Parkes. My Father-in-Law was an Iwo Jima Marine. He was in for 4 years and was active every day of those years. He was away from family the entire time. Sure different than now. He trained up to be a Demolitions man for his Iwo deployment. On hos 26th day on Iwo, he was shot, taking a foot long grazing shot down his back when he was falling into a bomb crater in the sandy soil there. His older brother, a navy Corpsman found him in the triage tent just hours before he was taken off the island to be sent ship for transport to a hospital. He always said, " I was a dumb 19 year old Corporal, I should have gotten shot on day 2 to get the Hell outta there!! To his final days, he spoke of the friends he lost there. He joined the local VFW in Eagle River, WI, where he lived and was a member there for 62 years. He held a very deep Hatred for the Japanese most of his life. He finished his Corps time after doing Japan Occupation as an MP. When he got home he went to work at a quarry where his demo skills got him to be the primary blasting man for the quarry. After a year of that he got into Electrical work and became a Lineman then a supervisor for a number of years, even doing contract power-line work in foreign countries. I sure do miss him. He was as much a Father to me as my very own Dad was. Thank you lester Twigg. Semper Fi.

I would feel confident see this man next to me if the world went crazy... Respect t and love everything every soldier has done or will do ..
I watched Randall's second UV episode first (EXCELLENT!!!), so I had to watch this one, too. Seeing a 20 year MC veteran transition so successfully to the civilian world is really a great thing to witness. Randall is the definition of "squared away".
I've listened to this like 3 times. Parkes is infectious with his positive attitude. Musta been awesome to serve with. Wish I woulda reenlisted every time I hear him talk about our Corps.
My oldest son went to OCS with the Navy in Newport RI. All OCS classes have several enlisted basic instructors and one Marine Corps DI. His was Gunnery SGT Campbell. He told me stories of gunny Campbell 'destroying' his class constantly and making life as miserable as he could. The thing is, his memories of that entire OCS class revolves around his memories of Sgt Campbell and how great of a mentor he was for the Navy and his life in general. He chose Sgt Campbell as his 'first salute' after graduating as a new Ensign in the Navy.
He submitted his retirement package exactly the same way I did in 2005. I had always gone wherever the Corps sent me. My last duty station was Marine Barracks 8 & I. I had completed two parade seasons and wanted to go back to a deploying unit at Lejeune. I called my 08 monitor and asked for orders, and he told me that I HAD to stay in DC for another year. I hung up the phone with him, called our admin section, and asked them to send me the paperwork I needed to submit my retirement. I never looked back. He didnt realize that I knew I had other options.
F..Yes,, this is all I can give you an Eagle, Globe and Anchor.. Never forget my Recruiter, 1983. one week after Beirut, Gunny Matson, he was tanker..he seen me talking to Navy and Air force, he was like you want to be the BEST.. Forward movement. Don't stagnate. Those can be the hardest objectives at times. Dedicated time, focused effort. Anything can be accomplished with enough time and effort.
@BuffCheeks80085 Testament for the importance of your reply and to be transparent with Yall. I have done nothing to assist my process since I wrote that 1 month prior. Continue to find excuses or other reasons to allow additional tasking for others or myself to supersede what I have continued to stack on top of for over a decade now already. I have taken that wisdom and helped others move in the right direction. Not trying to justify my inaction but I facilitate a course on the side for the military called Enlisted Leader Development. Have applied this term and rationale to several Groups and it always excites a genuine reaction from all Veterans but starts deep conversation, especially from those that have deployed or should be pursuing that same sort of full-spectrum path to healing that we all deserve. Thank you again for the push Buff
@@MuffinManUSN To paraphrase one of the final statements in this interview: "You are more valuable than you think, take advantage of opportunities" It sounds like you are taking opportunities, and are providing value to others with your knowledge. That is invaluable. You got this. I know we may not know each other, but I do believe in you.
What he says about being prepared with different options and having them ready is very very true; at 10 years in, 2 years into a 6 year reenlistment, they found tumors in my lung and had to remove 44 percent of my total lung capacity. Well I was a lifer from the age of 14 when I decided to join. The lung surgery was 31 years ago and still every day...every day... every day I struggle to not give in to the feeling I was cheated. I just happened to find your channel and this video. I can honestly say it was the BEST video/podcast I have ever had the pleasure to watch. Semper Fi! Sometimes I miss the gun club, sometimes I don't. But the Marine Corps will always be my single greatest personal achievement that only I could accomplish, unlike a marriage or raising children, and for me that will always be the thing I take most to heart from my days in the Corps.
1st sarnt Parkes!! He was my 1st Sgt in BMP (where injured Marines go) on the recruit depot in November 2020. We had a Marine go UA and when I was giving my report to the MP’s, I was in 1st Sgt’s office and I noticed all of his moto shadow boxes and paddles from his previous units/ deployments. I realized he was an absolute badass. I knew he was attached to a recon platoon but I had no idea he was a recon Marine and MARSOC Marine, nor did I know he spent time in Fallujah. Rah 1st sarnt, I’m honored to have been under your leadership if only for a short Time

1stSgt Parkes! Was and is a great leader. He was my 1stSgt when I was a hat a couple years ago. Very common sense and this video shows that we were right about him being a great leader!
I love the drill instructor idea of "i need theee guys to protect us when shtf so im gonna treat them like shit" it's just a great way to make someone want to stand by your side
That's crazy to hear his side of the story coming from someone who was already enlisted in the Marines while the towers were hit. You always hear of people enlisting because of the attack but that cool to hear about how ot was during.
I fucking love this dude! Kudos to you 1stSgt. You joined a few yrs before I got out. I wanna say that I am very proud of you! You're fucking doing it! Great advice by the way. For all you active duty and vets please absorb his wisdom. I concur with everything he's saying. I've been a nurse for 16 years, 10 being with the VA. I am surrounded by ppl like the 1stSgt. I could have done much better and gone further in my life, if I had this kind of guidance earlier. Most of all, be cool to yourself. Take care of your MH. Then conquer your moments. Keep putting in the work. We are counting on you to continue to play your important role in society. Side note. Being a vet is an an honor. Being a Marine is humbling. You represent a strangers uncle, grandad, dad, mom, grandma, friend, etc... the importance of being a Marine is truly felt, when you are no longer surrounded by your brothers and sister's. Be well folks. SF 1stSgt & keep killing it!
This guy is awesome! Ooh rah 1st Sgt! He joined 3 years before me, we gotta be close to the same age. What a cool dude, a savage… seems like he woulda been cool to work for and with. Great story teller too! Semper fi brother
I am picking up what you're putting down. I did 24 years in the US Navy, from 1980 to 2004. I retired as SCPO Submarines. But, I understand what you are saying. I started on destroyers, 3. Then I pulled my first shore duty, military police in Subic Bay Philippines. The military police were run by the Marines. My chain of command for about two and a half years was a Top, a Major and a Colonel. When I first got there I was a 2nd Class Petty Officer and made 1st Class Petty Officer while I was there. I primarily worked in the town of Olongapo, this was from 1985 to 1987. My career evolved from there, I went on to volunteer for Submarine duty. At what I thought was the end of my career, 9/11 happened. My retirement papers were already in. On 9/12, I pulled my retirement papers and served another three and a half years. I was also looking at a promotion to E-9 when I did that. Thank you for your Service!
I had a similar incident in boot camp Senior told all the smokers they could have a cigarette after chow. The Jr DI came out and gave them 1 cigarette for like 30 smokers . I wasn’t a smoker. The pain on all their faces was so freaking funny . Jr said “ senior said one not all 30 cigarettes ONE!!!
At least they got to watch a movie. USMC bootcamp Christmas 1987, our Drill Instructor roled out the TV and said we could watch TV. He turns it on, and it's just the TV snow with that God awful sound on the highest volume for 2 hrs. 😂😂😂 Semper Fi

This guy has very similar experiences during 9/11. I was 17 years old in bootcamp during 9/11 going through my first personnel inspection at Great Lakes. During that time, there was also an anthrax scare. I grew in Orange County, CA and I remember getting a letter in the mail from my father, telling me that he opened a letter with white powder at the post office and the FBI and postal inspector came and quarantined the area. Crazy times.
Marine you made my day. My thanks goes to you and my fellow Marines. I was already retired from our Marine Corps in 1994 after serving 21 years 3 months and 7 days. But who’s counting right. Anyway I’m very impressed with your Gung Ho attitude and it reminds me of my Drill Instructors at San Diego. I enlisted in the Corps 3 months out high school. I wanted to get away from my hometown and especially my Army father. I had learned from the best. The Vietnam Veterans before, during and after. I wish you the best Marine. Semper Fidelis Marine Warrior.
Isnt it amazing how the monitors screw us over at the end, same thing with me, dropped papers in a heart beat. You would think the USMC would love for you to stay in and pass on all your experience. Great attitude brother.

Just lost my best friend to suicide, whatching your episode reminds me that I have everything I need to keep pushing! Semper Fi
We all have struggles brother. Some of my friends never made it home. The best way to honor their sacrifice, is to live the best life I can. Keep pushing brother, it’s ok to ask for help.
Take care after your loss my friend 💖
Guess he finally realized what aPos he was for invading an innocent country and killing men for daring to defend their land huh Not much to be proud of. Especially considering they had a trillion $$ to kill guys w sandals and 50 bullets. Truth hurts.
🇺🇸🦅Keep your chin up brother.
Every day is a challenge for myself, but it is a challenge we all Gladly we will Adapt and Overcome.
"I layed down the hate on these guys" this dudes one liners are absolutely gold!
Randall Parkes exemplifies the essence of an outstanding American Marine. Humble, personable, dedicated, and honest.
Semper Fidelis 😎
Thank you for your service. 🇺🇲🇺🇸🇺🇲
Couldn't agree more man
Curious
What do you think his opinion of the current DoD policy about the use of pronouns? Allowing confused creatures with a penis into female locker rooms?
Served 24 years on active duty and another 18 in DoD civil service and was really concerned about what was going on.
I hope that I am not the only VET who is really concerned
That Austin, useless Brown, Allvin, Clark, Miller, and other useless humans have sold their souls to get another star
This kid is hilarious! Never stops smiling! Reminds me of Micky Rooney...personalities like this in Combat are worth their weight in gold...
kid? smh
Only the dumb are disallusioned like this, you’re all brainwashed this isn’t clear overcompensation for emotional trauma . Dude is gleeful to be an asshole dick. Sad for you all and him.
My family of vets call anyone younger than them, regardless of their experience “kid”. It’s an endearing sign of respect, not an insult lol
@@7781296yes sir same here always use to think it was because I was a actual kid till I got older and asked and got the same answer and to top it off all my family especially the elders are military vets from all branches
" I was like an orchestra conductor of pain and suffering. " Lol what a line 😂
I might forget a birthday, anniversary, or where I parked my car. I will never forget my Drill Instructors.
Love it!!
For sure, I never saw my DIs again. Def wish I could see them again. They are burned into my memory. Their passion was to make sure we became what they expected.
Ahhhh me to lol that’s so true and I remember my deployments or certain events I wasn’t special forces just an 11b with the 82nd 501 st infantry regiment air assault. Good old days
That’s a fact‼️‼️‼️
Platoon 2051 freaky fox ! Hollywood badboy
Besides being able to tell an amazing story, this dude is hardcore. Thank you for keeping my family safe. It’s MF’s like you that we need in this country.
Served in the USAF from August 1978 through August 2000 (21 years, 11 months, 15 days)....retired as an E7 (Master Sergeant)...I'm proud to say I have thousands of military brothers and sisters around the world...Thank you for your service...As they say, "Once a Marine - Always a Marine"

whats up chair force
He was my first sergeant at MCRD. I never knew anything of his career until now! Awesome video thank you for this!
@coopernwo007 what's MCRD? Marine corps reconnaissance division?
MCRD is Marine Corps Recruit Depot. West of the Mississippi goes to MCRD San Diego and East of the Mississippi goes to Paris Island South Carolina.
He was my 1st Sgt at BMP on MCRD San Diego! He didn’t even talk about it, but he kept morale high among those injured Marines (myself included). I knew he was a badass but didn’t know the full scope of it
Thats the happiest Marine ive ever seen, not to mention a 1st Sgt. S/F
Hunter / Gatherer so true. Unfortunately I was in more of a gatherer unit but you brought me many good Marine Corps memories. God bless you and your family.
Matt Temecula CA
Thank you 🙏🏼
The joy he shows about his career, it makes me miss the Marine Corps. Great fckng people. And congrats on the degree from USC Marshall. Great school!
Thanks for your service Chris!
His eyes light up re-telling his experiences. Doesn’t take a genius to see that this individual found his calling. I am proud of and grateful for warriors such as this to do the dirty work that most would be incapable of.
Thank you very much for allowing these men to tell their stories. As a 90's kid from a family of servicemen, I have always had the utmost respect for any capacity of military service.
This guy is great. Humble, hilarious, and an unashamed savage. I love to see it; it makes me proud of my great nation and the millions of vets who are trying to make it in the "normal" world after service.
Had the pleasure of having him as my Senior Drill Instructor during boot camp. Real stand up guy, you could tell behind that campaing cover, he was actually a really nice person.
I wish I would of served with him in the corps, however I had the pleasure to meet him as my realtor and he is super humble, down to earth and on top of his game. 100/10
I would buy a house from him just to hear his stories.
That's amazing. He's the definition of "the way you do something is how you do everything", no shock he's great at what he does! T

One of the best veteran interviews I’ve seen. Awesome job, Randall. Semper Fidelis.
I've met one maybe two SNCO's in the Corps with this guys demeanor. Wish there were more, I would considered re-enlisting.
Stand up guy and comes across as very genuine and down to earth. Too bad the corps loses great men like him and keeps the careerists who are out for themselves and the game.
believe me boss it's not just the corps its military across the board that is like this.
What a great storyteller! Very inspirational! We are so very lucky to have great veterans like First Sergeant Parkes walking among us.
One of the best interviews ever. Literally , this guy was so entertaining.
Semper Fi.
You can hear it in this man's voice when he's talking about the mortar to his helmet that was going to break down and cry in the Happy Lucky facade went goodbye..
Your spirit and personality is infectious. You must have been a great dude to deploy with.
It really is
My oldest son went to OCS with the Navy in Newport RI.
His interview is my favorite of the many I have seen here.....Such a high quality human being, and a credit to the country he served.
Seely is an absolute war machine. Loved working with him over the decades.
F..Yes,, this is all I can give you an Eagle, Globe and Anchor.. Never forget my Recruiter, 1983. one week after Beirut, Gunny Matson, he was tanker..he seen me talking to Navy and Air force, he was like you want to be the BEST.. I said hell yes, and then I joined the USMC.. went back 13 weeks later with dress blues and Platoon Honor graduate
I completely get it. Desert Shield kicked off when I was at MCRD. Contract 0311 so shit got real real quick! MCT and SOI we all were sponges because we KNEW we were absolutely going to need this knowledge.
1stSgt u just made my freaking day brother. When i retired back in 2015, i was prepared to get out. Everything you said was on the money brother. I got a phone call by my Sgtmaj say i got selected for 1stSgt lol. I was like where am i going he said Nc, i was already in the 29 palm's lol. I was just back from Afghanistan i was like no thanks Semper Fi, lol. I went through the same trash with my monitor. U going where the Crops need u lol. But i knew i did everything to get out and i was ready lol. 1stSgt u brought water to my eyes 5 deployments to Iraq and i was Supply, alot of convoys. Alot of trigger time, lol. Thank u so much brother. Love the hair 😂. Semper Fi brother!!!
That’s great to hear brother. You have so many more options when you’re prepared
Brother u are awesome. I just wanted another video you did and getting that dude and his family out of Afghanistan. Brother you are Superman to me. God bless you man.
You saved a fellow American somewhere in the future and he doesnt even know it. You should never feel bad. Ever.
God Bless.
WOW, that's a powerful statement and SO true!
This dude cracks me da hell up. He went in 10 years after me but fuckin hes hilarious lol. Respect
Great, likable guy, always upbeat, and a great storyteller. It was a pleasure to serve with you Brother.
Love it! And thank you so much for your service Steve!
Randall, I thoroughly enjoy watching your video clips.
Glad to hear it brother 👊🏼🇺🇸🤙🏼
I did Thanksgiving, and Christmas on MCRD San Diego, 2001.... And I fucking love you for the boot camp story you shared. Hahahah Fuck yeah!! Semper Fidelis brother! ❤😂😂.
😂
Semper Fi brother🤙🏼👊🏼🇺🇸 thanks for watching
We have all seen the lickies and chewies video good to see the full interview.
That plate stacking PTSD statement you made at the end got me. I'm going to talk to a professional. All is well but need to start the process by genuinely thanking both of you for this video in its entirety.

@@MuffinManUSN To paraphrase one of the final statements in this interview:
"You are more valuable than you think, take advantage of opportunities"
It sounds like you are taking opportunities, and are providing value to others with your knowledge. That is invaluable. You got this. I know we may not know each other, but I do believe in you.
John, Thank you for your service. Man, a grand shirt. Your eagle, globe and anchor.
Appreciate you watching 🤙🏼🇺🇸👊🏼
This guys's amazing. And he still puts on a good smile. What a great example to be a good human.
Thank you First Sergeant!
Overall I'm a retired as a Gysgt and I'm about 62 years old. God Bless and Semper Fi to the Marine Corps
Appreciate you brother 🫡🇺🇸
What he says about being prepared with different options and having them ready is very very true; at 10 years in, 2 years into a 6 year reenlistment, they found tumors in my lung and had to remove 44 percent of my total lung capacity. Well I was a lifer from the age of 14 when I decided to join. The lung surgery was 31 years ago and still every day...every day... every day I struggle to not give in to the feeling I was cheated. I have lived a great life...I love the Marine Corps...I always say anything for a Marine or a pretty girl...Semper Fi...

This was one of my most absolute favorite people to watch. He is just like me and my older brother. We were both Marines and surfers.
Strong work brother.. certainly a favorite member Mashup (service member briefing). THE Corps loves to disseminate the big Green Weeeeny. Take advantage of every opportunity especially those appearing uncomfortable or unsavory.
My biggest regret is regret~ Major P.
Anyone from BRC 4-8 or TBS 3-13? Mustangs lead the way!
Damn! That guy motivates the piss out of me. I’d love to see him do a Ted Talk on recognizing and taking advantages of opportunities without losing your self. There are so many friends in mind, both veteran and civilians, that could get a lot out of that.
LET's GOOOO
Mad respect to this true patriot. Our country owes a huge debt to our veterans
Once again an amazing interview Sir. Keep up the great job giving these heroes a chance to tell their story.
We will definitely keep them coming!
I just happened to find your channel and this video. I can honestly say it was the BEST video/podcast I have ever had the pleasure to watch. First Sergeant Parks, you exemplify the best of the Corps and I thank you for your service. As a fellow Californian, surfer (DUDE) and former Hospital Corpsman (FMF), you make me miss all of my Marines. Semper Fi and hang loose. Doc USN 1970-78
Semper Fi! Sometimes I miss the gun club, sometimes I don't. But the Marine Corps will always be my single greatest personal achievement that only I could accomplish, unlike a marriage or raising children, and for me that will always be the thing I take most to heart from my days in the Corps.
Thank you for your service brother semper Fi
Appreciate it brother and for watching 👊🏼🇺🇸
I wish everyone could talk as openly and honestly! Thank you.
Thank you for all you've done to defend this country, Mr. Parkes.
I was Weapons Field Training Battalion when he was in bootcamp. I remember when 911 happened and helping training recruits during that time.
🤙🪖
I did 24 years.Simply one of the best interviews I have seen. Semper Fi !
Rah 1st sarnt, I’m honored to have been under your leadership if only for a short Time
Lmao I left BMP the same time you arrived
@@fredthomas1029 I wouldn’t wish that purgatory on anyone lol
This was a phenomenal interview. I wish I could’ve watched this before I EAS’d. Semper Fidelis to First Sergeant Parkes. Thanks for sharing your wisdom.
Fantastic interview 20 years and a great smile on his face what a patriot
1stSgt Parkes! Was and is a great leader. He was my 1stSgt when I was a hat a couple years ago. Very common sense and this video shows that we were right about him being a great leader!
I love the drill instructor idea of "i need theee guys to protect us when shtf so im gonna treat them like shit" it's just a great way to make someone want to stand by your side
You are a great person! Being growing up in hemet Armpit of California you overcame the pitfalls of poverty! You did it and deserve the highest honor!

Thank you Marine. One in Camp Pendalton now one going to Parris Island in 42 days. The EGA flys at my house everyday. Semper Fi
Guys like him get on well in the Marines cuz he’s having fun, it doesn’t seem like much will really piss him off. So glad to hear him talk
The drill instructor segment had me dying 😂😂😂
I came for the title story but watched the whole thing. Great stories and storyteller. Thank you so much for your service!
We Appreciate you watching and for your support
Dude is an amazing storyteller. I bet he was an absolute legend to deploy with.
This guy is awesome! Ooh rah 1st Sgt! He joined 3 years before me, we gotta be close to the same age. What a cool dude, a savage… seems like he woulda been cool to work for and with. Great story teller too! Semper fi brother
Appreciate you watching 🤙🏼🇺🇸👊🏼 SF
My younger bro is a retired Marine and you guys/gals are awesome thanks for serving!!
✝️🇺🇸🦅
I like that he didn’t always follow stupidity. The movie story is hilarious. Nothing like taking the sugar out of the cake.
Completely agree
I would pay for this dude to tell boot camp stories like that every week lol. The joy he has knowing theyll all remember him forever.

Funny to see him slip back into drill instructor mode.
ahha right?!

Would love to see him talk more in depth about his exit and transition. This is something a lot of us that are nearing the 20 yr mark need

I couldn't help but watch this more than once. He's so motivating and such a great story teller
Lol ...I was thinking the same thing. Great observation!
This is probably one of the best veteran interviews I've ran into. What a good dude.
I am so proud of this man, the people he has influenced in a positive way towards the marine corps is priceless. Usmc 92-96
