Cover songs can be legitimately licensed. Some can't due to a number of random issues. Plenty of people make money from licensing and selling covers, where the original composer takes a cut. The only "people these days" that are ignorant and don't know about the law is people like you.
DSC that's a nice excuse for trying to make money from other people's work, until you make something you can call your own, and have leeches with that mindset rip you off you won't understand. People who do it for passion will always win over those who do it for money.
