My first pass thru this album at 12yrs. old this song grabbed me like my daddy given me a woopen . OUCH !!😆 73 and still kickin ass and taken names !!!
.. ya really, eh. but maybe there just wasn't enough room for it beside the 4 or 5 other Chart Topping Hits, That came out of this album ( Something/Anything ) ❤️
I was listening to a progressive radio station and this song came on. I hadn't heard it in years and it had the same effect on me as it did the last time. Pure rock and roll in my soul. Just excellent!!
For me, one of the great albums off all time. The writing, performing, lyrics, singing, production. It doesn't get any better than this. I bought it when it came out and have listened to it hundreds of times. I never followed any other Todd recordings (sorry ToddHeads) after this one. Supremely talented guy. This is my "one album on an island" pick.
Like You.....one of my all time favorites by anybody. A great late night driving and singing along album. Have been listening to it for 50 years now and also like you have never found another Todd album to even come close to this. Now that I`m aging, I sold off all my other Todd Vinyl records, but this is in constant rotation and Black Maria is probably my favorite song on here.
I heard this song today on a streaming service. I seem to hear it every few years. What has happened to music, it used to be so artfully inspiring, so original. Artists like Todd just don’t make mainstream anymore.
I was 15 when this double album came out (Something/Anything?). My 18 year old brother bought it, and I immediately latched on to it. I was just beginning to mess around with playing bass guitar at the time, and this song and album were so influential, especially when I found out that Todd provided all the instruments and vocals on this song (and half that album). Pure genius! Todd Rundgren produced many other famous groups, and that was maybe his greatiest contribution. The best album by "XTC" was produced by Rundgren.
I'm going to record this tomorrow. I always thought this was a blues standard, something the Allman Brothers had played. I'll have a Fender vs. Les Paul dual lead. More edge and power because this is not only the saddest song ever written, it's the wisest
Todd Rundgren must have been in a really fantastic place in his life to be able to churn out this many great songs! Who else debues with a double album? Todd! That's who! There is something magical about most of his songs. Like an essence of some kind. I honestly cannot think of any other band that produced that many greats on not one but two albums? The man was exploding with creativity and thank God for that!
@@lisamarie225 - WMMS used to play that tune a lot. Ian Hunter (Mott The Hoople) did that tune. I moved to England back in the early 1980s. I'm back in NE Ohio (again). I don't know much about the format on Cleveland Rock stations are these days. They seem to play a lot of stuff over and over again -- music that I never cared for -- then or now. I like obscure sound -- Surf, Garage and Psychedelic. Cheers -- W
Romantic Warrior we wore that album out thanks Todd ,,, 75YRS YOUNG album gets better seen him live do this song in Los Angeles were I can't remember...
I saw him twice, once with Utopia. And once at a solo synthesizer, multimedia show, just him, as far as I remember, at the Agora in Columbus Ohio Sometime in the 70's.
If Prince had done the middle solo this amazing song would be viral. Totally amazing album! Thank you, Sir Toddly, for always having been on my life's soundtrack.
Classic album the great todd rungren great writer rock and ballards great musician made some great albums and with utopia still great live today keep it coming todd
BLACK MARIA was also the name of the tractor trailer truck seen at the end of the 1974 Texas Chainsaw Massacre 😃 I often wonder if the name of that truck was inspired by this song
We had German Shepherds that would scale a 10 ft fence 2 get 2 you my German Rottweiler will just go throgh the damn door but let the raccoon in 2 play .Wait a second isn't that like a Paul Macartney song with door bells ? My MaMa Bear is called Lady Ga Ga people in Portage Lake State Park said they had 1 they named Martha Stewert...I spoil her cuz they only live 8 to 10 years then gone.....sad but true she completes me and had me at Hello.man ain't I such a hard ass...
People may stone me but to me this sound like Dark Side Pink Floyd before Dark Side. With a touch of soul/funk/toddness. I mean, the whole Something/Anything has so many genres/styles on it.
Like Robin Thrower, TODD "DELIVERS THE GOODS"..... MY G.F. IS from Ukraine. When I mentioned the studio of this tune, she texted back the Google addy for the LIVE version. There it was TODD WITH a green STRAT-NOT townshends les-gee, a Tele rhythm and a not from her "Let's listen together". That girl has TASTE....
Todd’s influence changed the course of music……. Then music died because of the industry. They learned how to make processed cheese and never went back, hence the 80s to present day which now is cardboard that looks like cheese.
@@jondelaireTotally agree that music has become a commodity - a capitalist product which only logic of creation is profit. Artists who remain genuine though stay outside mainstream culture and get almost no money.

No I am a True Cockney from the East End of London where I still live and Black Maria is a Van that took the Criminals off to the Nick (Police Station) 😋❤️
how TR was not Anointed 'Guitar God/Hero' nationwide after this song is one of the 'mysteries of music'? My only guess is because he does 'Everything' else on 3 sides of this album too, plays All the instruments, songwriter, producer, etc. etc. or that he had to further prove it w 'Utopia' & 'The Ikon'?
He actually was. Todd was heavily covered in magazines and appeared on every popular show of the day. By 1980, however, his continual need to evolve and experiment caused him to fade into obscurity, with the exception his rabid fan base.
While Todd may have wrote this about a relationship ....lets take another angle then shall we. Think about the El Rino Tornado a few yrs. back .Now think about it ...that was a true Black Maria friends. Maria meaning hellish wind.
Fifty years on and still loving it.
Something/Anything? : one of the most creative and paramount music album of the pop music.
They don't make songs this good anymore.
Never
.. oh, they are around. It's called Sleeping Beauty 😔
This whole album is a total masterpiece!
I have seen Todd in concert an amazing 56 times. Loved everyone of them. Todd for President.
Ah, Todd Rundgren, bringing us such lyrical gems as, "If you must kill me, please let me die," since 1971.
Great album from my youth 🙌👏❤️
My first pass thru this album at 12yrs. old this song grabbed me like my daddy given me a woopen . OUCH !!😆 73 and still kickin ass and taken names !!!
His transitioning from his guitar ripping at 3:45 back to the main theme is just beautiful. Well done sir! And still a classic!
What a release of tension and it’s amazing. What a ride!
AND STILL GETTING HIGH TO THIS IN 2022 ALMOST 2023
70 year old American man here listening and smoking top notch weed while doing it. Yeeha!!!!!
I'm obsessed. I hear this playing in my head especially the fantastic guitar solo. It's been with me for a few days now. Not a bad obsession!!
The best in all categories of music
I wore this album out as a teen..yes..a vinyl album I cherish !
oh man back when digging was still a thing. growing up on mp3s & CDs I'll be forever jealous
Me too 😊
still here and listening in 2019... thank you for this gem, Todd!

This continues to be a gem!
Gearing up the Todd playlist moments before my 2 1/2 hour road trip via Saugerirs NY to Long Valley, NJ.

That's what they claim to be at least.
They play mainly pop.

todd r. plays every instrument on this track and all of sides 2-2&3 for the two record set - first album on Warner Brothers - Bearsville label
Something/Anything is on Amazon Music Unlimited, but not including this song(best one on a 2 disc set).
Oh my god, this is so great, reminds me a little at Pink Floyd. Just discovered that song and listening to it since hours.
The 20 folks who downvoted this need to reevaluate their lives.

Black Maria is old school slang for a paddy wagon/prison transport. Not sure how it relates to the song, but there it is...
English term for a hearse as well. The song is all about death.
