My grandmother served in Malta and 64 General Hospital in Salonika. She travelled out on HMHS Britannic, getting off at Malta before the ship was mined. As a result of the sinking, other much smaller hospital ships took up the work. One such ship, HMHS gruntully Castle required extra doctors. Grandmother was assigned. As she went up the brow, she caugt sight of "a tall officer trying to get a squizz at her ankles." They were married at Malta on their return. Thereafter, she returned to Salonika. She practiced through almost to the end of her life. Right through The Blitz and as a little boy, I recall a police car driving up to the house. Of course, I did not understand her words to my mother, "Oh dear, another baby found in the harbour."
What an excellent lecture. Look forward to more by Dr Newell.
A fascinating look at an often overlooked field of study. Thanks to all, especially to Dr. Newell.
