That was, by far, the most informative, easy to understand TH-cam instruction use video I've ever watched in my life. And what a great idea to add some postive reinforcement at the end. What a great instructor/teacher you must be. Thank you very much, sir. *And what a great way to encourage others to indirectly communicate to those that watch instructions videos, that we're not using tool's wrong. That instead to troubleshoot a solution with the tools we have. Well said, sir
Thanks for this video. It has been 55+ years since I used an older version of this tool and it triggered my memory for using the scribe to mark a right angle starter hole from the side of a cabinet door off of the old mounting. The old hinges were x2 out and 1 in, while the new hinges were 1 in and two out (thus reversed) By using the tool and the scribe I am able to mark the drill holes and set the drill depth with tape so I do not drill the new hole through the cabinet door. This allows me to mount the side-hinged door using the same side holes and it makes the level point off of the existing cabinet holes, but reversed. This would be another use of the scribe as a starter for the drill to pre-drill the hole for the screws. This was a great tutorial that was well laid out for content and examples.
I inherited a combo square from my grandpa. It sat in the bottom of my toolbox for 20 years before I found a reason to use it (I'm not a super big project kind of guy), but it came in handy when I finally needed it to rebuild a wooden fence gate.
So many channels spend too much time gabbing, making jokes, not to mention cinematic intros. lol I prefer to get in and get out with the info I need vs. hang out for the day. I like your style because you SHOW what you are talking about vs. just talking about it and THEN demonstrating it. Great job. On another note, I have a quick question: If you were to choose one, would you get a speed square or a combination square? Do I need both? II am interested in woodworking, not carpentry.
So glad I came across your channel. Bought one of these recently for something else and you showed me so many different uses. Especially my older miter saw. Thank you.
The scribe tool is used to scratch into steel plates. To cut using torch for later. Iron workers use this too everyday to get 45° angles on a plate and make cuts.
@@kobragangbitfirst you need to have a square with a hole. Assuming you have one this is how you do it. First adjust the square to where you want it so you can make the right size circle. Be sure the 45 degree angle is facing up. Next put a nail through the hole in the ruler and hold it tightly Then put a pencil in the 45 degree piece and draw a circle.
Thanks for the video I use a lot of your educational videos to guide my self thru projects.just wanted to say thank you your a pretty good teacher and the way you explain things I get it pretty quickly. Thank you sir 🙏
Thank you for an awesome channel. Been wood working for about a year and appreciate the useful information.... Learned so much from this video.. Particularly the blade angle setup for the table saw.....
Great video. I bought the combo ruler to measure depth. Did not know the countless other uses. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge. Much apprexciate it.
I came looking to see how a combo square worked, because I was going to buy just a plain old normal square to realign my daughter's wonky wardrobe. Now I'll get the combo square. Thanks for the video, it was informative and to the point😊👌🏾👍🏾
Great information, although a bit fast paced for me 😁 I will have to re-watch a few times to soak it all in as I am not a wooder. Another use for this tool on the mechanics side of things, (which is why I got one,) is to use it to set the offset on a harley spoked wheel. Set straight edge against the hub with the square against the side of the hub. Use the level for getting it just right, and then measure the distance from the hub end to the rim. Make spoke adjustments as needed to move left or right. there ya go!
Excellent insights, well thought out and nicely presented! I'd never taken the time to see everything this little tool could do. I think I'll keep using my punch over the scribe tool though...so much easier whenever you're awkwardly off balance with only one hand available!
Do you have a video for finding non-plumb angles on door jams? I've got an older house I need to cut an interior door for and the floor and the door jam were built to address those angles. Thanks for this video! I definitely had forgotten why I got this after a carpentry class...
Beautiful! I use a 4-1/2” & 7” speed/rafter square @ work but I’ve always wondering what was the diff was with a combo square... looking all fancy 😂 Outside of potential accuracy I guess, Thanks! Next I’m gunna figure out what the dastardly “double square” is used for 😃
Although already familiar with a slide square, this video is a great reminder of what you can do with it and of course without spending a “gazillion” dollars for a plethora of shiny “red” instruments...😉 Thanks again for sharing your knowledge...🤓

You can also use the square as a compass to draw circles.
how???

Yeah baby. My Swanson 12” just got delivered five minutes ago and I have no clue what to do with the thing. Had a feeling THA would have me covered 🪚
Excellent analysis as always.
Much appreciated!
Epic video, thank you 4 sharing your knowledge with us, it's so helpful.
Pin makes it easy to use chisel on the line drawn. Pencil is error prone.
I've used the scribe for metalworking with the square, mark cut lines with it.
Yes, I think it works better on metal than wood. :)
Perfect! You are the maestro of expansion.
Awesome instructional video, thanks!

I have had this tool for over 10 years and never knew how useful it was because it was missing the ruler portion and the nut that holds it in place.
