I just read "Shadowlands" and loved it. The Welsh village being drowned was incredibly moving. Thanks as always, Bob, and I pleased you don't mind me coming back to these "old" videos and dropping comments.
Ah yes! I think it’s such a well done book, and that story is so heartbreaking. And by all means, go ahead! Thank you! It’s funny for me as I forget that those videos are still there 😂
I also was hooked on last year`s Wainright after I read Merlin Sheldrake and James Reebank. I really liked Otherlands on this year`s list and Goshawk summer will be in my postbox any day now. I used the Wainright guides to the fells in the lake district when I walked there as a teenager so it is very fitting that I read the books in honour of his memory!
Wow Shadowlands sounds awesome I hope it comes over here too. That’s just a fantastic premise. Love the cover for The Instant. What a great shortlist. Another prize list dowwwn. 2000 to go Bob. Haha
I discovered this prize while visiting England a few years ago now and absolutely love it. So much so I have begun a project of reading ALL the short listed books since the beginning. I will finish Badgerland this weekend. Thanks for advancing this prize on your channel, Bob!
Oh amazing! And that sounds like such a great reading project! I’ve been tempted to do that, especially as I love the ones I’ve read so far! And thank you! My pleasure!
I have to read Shadowlands !! Thank you so much for describing these books…I have several on my TBR LIST, but Shadowlands will be first. Do you recall a novel that involves one of the “drowned cities” ?
I wouldn’t consider Otherlands to be nature writing :). It’s most definitely in the popular science category, which happens to make up the majority of my non-fiction reading. Anything to do with evolution, paleontology, paleoanthropology, the history of the planet in general is catnip for me ;).
Yes, I was wondering that too! It sits oddly in terms of genre, but I loved it all the same! And exactly as you said, those sorts of books are what I love!

Ooh, lovely! And I always forget that the Wainwright guides have been so well used- great they opened up lots of the countryside to people!
