Situation is so important for a player's success. I look at a player like Dereck Lively this year. He gets drafted by a winning team, gets to mentor with Tyson Chandler, and gets spoon-fed lob passes by one of the best set-up men ever in Luka. Now obviously, Lively has done an amazing job buying into his role. And he has insane physical gifts. But if he'd gone to Detroit to be the 5th center on the roster, does he look as good right away? I think Jayson Tatum is another super-talented guy who developed really well but also benefitted from having an amazing situation from the jump. He joined a great team with some nice veteran leadership and a good coach, but there was still some real opportunity for early minutes. Granted, certain players are so insanely talented that they would look amazing anywhere they go (Luka, LeBron, etc). But that's not most players. Even most All-Stars don't fall into that category.

Lakers and Grizzlies trade for Pau Gasol is insane. Is like trading the best player you ever had for bunch off bench warmres and hoping the second round pick you got turns into an all-star.
Great analysis, player development and culture are a huge part about what makes a player successful and learn to play winning basketball. If Kobe was never traded and was a member of the Hornets, I don't think he learns to become a championship level player if he stays there and he might develop into a more a Tracy McGrady type player.
I still think James Wiseman could've been at least a Deandre Ayton type player if he was in a different situation. Dude had the scoring talent, rim protection, size, length, and athleticism. The problem is, the Warriors didn't need all that, they needed the role player stuff like clever box outs, tap outs, screen setting, timely cutting, shot selection, you know, the stuff that most rookies don't know when they enter the league, and take a few years to develop. He was drafted to the worst position possible, then was somehow traded to an even worse situation.

Love this video, people really act like development isn't vital for rookies and that it's on them to immediate succeed when the team management may not always prioritize it in that manner. I look at it this way. Steph would be a multi time All Star likely at the very least say if he was drafted by the Wolves. But would he have the success he's had up until this point as far as with the Warriors? I highly doubt that. Minnesota at the time was somewhat decent with individual draft development (Kevin Love being an example,) but that was honestly about it.
The NBA in its current state has a lazy approach with letting the draft be the way to have talent fall in your hands without the need to develop the talent
I've always had an idea for a video that focuses on the most impactful of statistical anomalies in basketball. The ones that helped teams the most like ridiculous shooting % or ones that hurt teams the most like a large number of turnovers or a poor 3 % for the game. But things that were completely against the statistical baseline that would be expected from a team.
At the end of the day nobody’s more responsible for a player’s development than the player themselves🤷♂️ “you can lead a horse to water but can’t make em drink it” applies. Some have it some don’t
I think a Team's development staff is a big part of the equation to success that nobody mentions. I think a team's development staff is even more important than their scouting team.
The reason everyone said the Pain trade was so bad was because it made the Lakers instant contenders again, it had very little to do with Marc. Chris Wallace was accused of executing the trade out of spite against the Celtics who had just put together their Big 3. The Lakers won in '09 and '10 not instantly but very shortly after. Talk to your old heads before you talk to the young folk.
This is exactly what I always bring up whenever I hear the age old "oh this team should have drafted this guy" like can you tell me with absolute certainty that he would have been even half the player he ended up being if he was put in a different environment? Like take a look at Pre-Injury Gordon Hayward, became an all star and reached the NBA's apex of talent in 2017, in a redraft of the 2010 draft he would probably have gone third behind PG and Wall instead of where he was drafted at 9 behind Evan Turner, Al-Farouq Aminu, Derrick Favors and Wesley Johnson. But you have to remember it took Hayward 7 years to carve himself out as the 3rd best player in that draft class, if he was put in a different environment without the chance to develop and nurture his talent for 7 years would he still have become that same player? I don't think so.
Also alot of it is allowing a young player to figure it out, think about a team like okc when they drafted Russ, if he wasn’t giving that green light to go out and do what he does as a rookie he probably wouldn’t of tuned out a mvp and hall of famer
Its great that the Euroleage allows some players to develop their game before coming to the NBA by playing professionally in their early years. Its a shame the G-League failed to replicate it because the incentive is to just have good stats for the NBA.
I know it's not really the focus of the chanel and maybe the general audience of it but that's even more noticeable at football (soccer). You have "seller teams" that are known for giving the perfect condition for players to flourish like Ajax, Sporting, Porto and Lyon that extract the best out of players and in the other hands you also have the "career killers" sort of saying, like Manchester United, Chelsea, PSG that usually buy players from those teams and they never fulfill their potential. Recent examples I cant think of at the top of my head are Depay, Bergwijn, , Ziyech, Telles and Sanches. The pressure to perform IMO is a big factor if not the biggest in both sports/leagues. If a guys goes from a smaller club to a big club in football it means more people are watching him and the weight of his pricetag makes it harder for younger players to perform, I guess being a lottery pick in a NBA also has this mental effect, because if you're like a first rounder and you don't perform people will rush in to call you a bust and saying that they could have traded the pick in a package for another player or something. Loved the video by the way!
I might be able to shoe horn something like that into another video. It's a great idea. I remember Ibrahimavic at Ajax and when he went to Inter. I'd love to watch a video on that. thanks for the suggestion!

As always, love picking your brain about these topics that no one really considers. I couldn't imagine coming to the league so young, defending and trying to keep up with mostly already developed players, half of them being vets. I think we, as the fans, expect too much just because someone is a prospect. Yes, they were awesome against people in their same age group and, for the most part, talent level. Give them a chance. It's so much pressure. Let them develop. There are so many kids that end up being the absolute shit sooner than later Some later rather than sooner. Some are not at all. Some have a early short peak. Some have a delayed long peak. Time will tell. Also have to factor in thungs like injuries (zion, mpj, kyrie etc..) id hate to write you a whole book about stuff most days. On the point of that the people that cry about the Pistons not getting high picks like they didn't have the 1st like three years ago drive me up the wall. Yes, their Teams sucks ass, but also their player development is non existent.
Cleanthony Early complained that Phil Jackson and Craig Robinson (Michele Obama's Brother) did very little Player Development when he played for the Knicks.
It's amazing thay you can make a very insightful video about player development without even having to mention the greatest example of good player development in NBA history: Nikola Jokic. Just goes to show that (1) this channel is going to boom very soon and (2) there's so much more to the NBA itself than just the Jordan vs LeBron debate or any other bullshit that ESPN continues to shove down our throats like a BBC.
Every time I see a potentially great prospect go into bad situations, I feel bad for them. Like I was so happy Wemby ended up with the Spurs. Obviously, he was probably gonna be generational regardless of where he went but I can't imagine what his development would look like if he was on last season's Pistons

@@whatslaps Tifo has some great videos about Chelsea Academy: th-cam.com/video/Yyd27n_7NKs/w-d-xo.html
and La Masia (Barcelona): th-cam.com/video/tResxp9hOHo/w-d-xo.html
Chelsea are starting to change their approach about signining prospects, not too long ago you would see players signining for them and being stuck in an endless cycle of loans like Lucas Piazon for instance, who was loaned out 7 times in 9 years while only playing 3 games for them or sold after one or two seasons like what happened with Maatsen this season
There are so many kids that end up being the absolute shit sooner than later
Some later rather than sooner. Some are not at all. Some have a early short peak. Some have a delayed long peak. Time will tell. Also have to factor in thungs like injuries (zion, mpj, kyrie etc..) id hate to write you a whole book about stuff most days. If you have a discord or something where followers pf yours can discuss stuff, id love to join. If not, looking forward to every monday where i can pick that brilliant mind of yours again. Im gonna buy a pack of corndogs and talk to my roommate about basketball 😂❤ much love, dude. It's always a pleasure 🙏🏾 hope all is well.
Yeah, they should really do a hard knocks style show or a show entirely dedicated to the lives and experiences of draftees. Similar to that movie they did on g league last year or two years ago. It was rad. No discord atm but I'll keep u in the loop. hope all is well with you too, player.
On the point of that the people that cry about the Pistons not getting high picks like they didn't have the 1st like three years ago drive me up the wall. Yes, their Teams sucks ass, but also their player development is non existent.
exactly. the NBA knows and gives them lucky number five now.
great monday(tuesday) to be a whatslaps fan
good day any day of the week.
Cleanthony Early complained that Phil Jackson and Craig Robinson (Michele Obama's Brother) did very little Player Development when he played for the Knicks.
thanks obama
Do you think the Raptors rebuild is good? What's missing? Do we just need to give it time?
I don't really know. I think it needs another season or two before the team has expectations.
I know I thought about including him and Derrick White on the video but I've talking about both of them a lot lately. Had to mix it up
I don't have a corndog, will mini corndogs suffice?
put three of them on a popsicle stick.
My favorite song is Lipstick by Guttermouth
Mine too
happy monday whatslaps
happy Mon baby!
Wish it was a little longer Tbh
extendo video coming in 2 weeks
I would love a video on the hornets new management and owners. No one every speaks about the hornets😢
we need to give them a few years and then we can go in on em.
some players are ready to go day one while others need a few seasons to get their feet under them😊
Yeah sarr and riscasher are going to need a little time imo
@@whatslaps not good for top five picks like them
Every time I see a potentially great prospect go into bad situations, I feel bad for them. Like I was so happy Wemby ended up with the Spurs. Obviously, he was probably gonna be generational regardless of where he went but I can't imagine what his development would look like if he was on last season's Pistons
Yeah, landing on the Spurs was a good thing for him. Especially if you consider Pop's record with big men
Imagine if he'd ended up in Charlotte. oooff
My back is starting to feel better!
that's what's up. the team is about to crawl right back on it.
the cocomelon of nba content
espn for kids
I was hoping you'd have something to say about Marvin Bagley
I like pick on one player at a time. balance the negativity.
@@whatslaps gotcha. I mistook James Wiseman for Marvin Bagley when glancing at the thumbnail. To me, he could even be a better example of poor development bc, you know, the Kings.
Instant follow
thank you for the sub. god bless ya
How do you feel about the
melo ball show in charlotte
I know he got paid but he has missed a lot of time
Really not crazy about anything going on over tbh. Id focus on miller over ball
All these “one and done” players going to bad teams are not good for the NBA. I think if there is a farm system a la baseball, it would be better for development.
that'd be really interesting. the g league ignite felt like the start of that. RIP
Hey coach, next time can we differentiate between the Gasol brothers, Marc and Pau, instead of getting them both under the same umbrella? Not just Gasol this and Gasol that, which brother did what ( I watch 90% of your vids without the screen )
next time I'll do that for sure 👍
what do you think of dennis schoeder tho
Love his game. Always liked him as a Laker.
Man you need to add a bit more of a pause in your cuts and variety to your cadence
rogder that!
Rodger
What about a "Whatslaps" NFL channel?
I'm still trying to convince my brother to do it, but he's too educated to stoop down to "Content Creator" status.
whats up my brotha
whazzzzup?!
Anthony Edwards definitely has not grown… coaches lie.
Suspend your disbelief. 😜
Very Bill Wurtz coded and I like it
haha, someone else has said that before.
Is James Wiseman's Pacers contract a "flier" contract?
That's exactly what it is.
@@whatslaps 'Preciate ya'!
Bro what is "Field Goal range"? 🤣I'm a little concerned some people think FG% means only 2-pointers lol
🤣

Did you make her coffee?
this guy doesn’t believe in pauses after sentences
No periods. Period.
Cough cough Ben Simmons
he was sort of a reverse situation. developed and then got exposed for his weaknesses.

Yeah Marc Gasol didn't have any help in the nba. Having a hall of fame older brother means nothing

sorry brother :(
What about Tatum who was drafted to a great team and still developed
Were the celtics good when he was drafted?
@@whatslaps Yes, just fresh off a conference finals appearance with IT and the boys, then drafted into another conference finals team with Kyrie, Brown, Rozier, Hayward, Horford

crazy seeing how things turned out for Wiseman yet we saw the Mavs get Lively who played a good role on their playoffs run
I know. That's a great example. The more I think about it, the injuries really ruined Wiseman.
Get a green screen. Generated backgrounds aren't very good.
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
The direction of this video confusing me
Confusion is the first stage of growth

James Wiseman is playing like a veteran in the playoff with the Warriors but he kept getting injured and can’t keep up with the high pace, golden state have raise a lot of talent from scratch
I want to do another injury video. talking about the psychology of injuries
