terrific U2 song. this band has so many colors, layers and stages to discover. amazing carrer of those 4 irish guys. sugestion: watch this song live in ZOO TV 1993. Thats the real experience and where The Fly open his wings
The Edge is the lead guitarist & backup singer (he sings the high parts in this song). He is known for very ambient sounds & creating a mood & a visual unique to every song. Adam Clayton is the bassist, he has a very original style & he & Larry Mullin Jr the drummer make up one of the strongest rhythm sections in rock. They got together as a band in 1976!!
I'm a huge U2 fan but the reality is they don't draw a lot of people for reaction vids. They are still the biggest live act in the world and one of the GOATS of Rock music. They are "Pop" in the same way Pearl Jam or Metallica is, they're just a huge band. To get more reactions it really is the big hits for them, the Fly isn't (although the album Achtug Baby is considered one of the greatest of the 90's and U2's career, btw, they were in late 20's early 30's at this point), it's a fantastic song but more for fans who were used to the Joshua Tree/Rattle and Hum and suddenly this song! Either way, I hope you do react to more U2 but if the clicks aren't there I understand.
I'll continue doing U2 reactions every now and then depending on how many people are watching, we'll see what happens, thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts
Bono was reading CS Lewis at the time, particularly a book called the Screwtape Letters. In an extremely general overview, the book is about a senior demon in hell corresponding with his nephew, a junior demon, who is trying to figure out the best ways to corrupt the hearts of men. The idea is that to learn this, you should willingly take a deep dive into sin - sample as much as you can - so that you have a first hand understanding of what mankind desires. This way, you can really know how to use this understanding against mankind. The Fly is a guy calling from the payphone - while ultimately seeking salvation, he willing goes to Hell and learns all sorts of great and terrible truths. But to his great surprise, he finds that DAMN, Hell is actually quite fun ! Hell is all sex, drugs and rock'n'roll ! It's fame, fortune and satisfaction ! Too much is not enough !!! And so, the Fly isn't in any great hurry to get back, and we are left with a trickster character - a good guy (maybe) who is still determined to find salvation.... but he's intent on having a VERY good time along the way. Later on in the Zoo TV tour and during the Zooropa album, Bono introduced Mr. MacPhisto - a new devil character who he described as being The Fly after getting fully corrupted - he's old now; a faded star crooning in Las Vegas nightclubs. Years of sensory overload has left him a shadow of his former self, but at the same time, he's grown powerful enough to influence world leaders - which Bono would do every other night during the shows where he would make prank phone calls to the UN and world leaders live from the stage. Glad you enjoyed the song. There's a lot of good stuff from Achtung Baby!, you should consider checking more out from that album if you decide to dig deeper into this band's catalogue. Cheers o7
That was a pretty good read, thanks for sharing! More U2 to come as well. By the way, is there any reason why the main character name is Fly? I was thinking maybe it has to do with Belzebuth as one of his forms is a fly and it also represents filth with uncareness like the main character
@@SattzFF Hey thanks for the note. I was never clear on where the Fly as a character came from exactly. It could have been as you suggested or more that he was a 'fly on the wall' while in Hell; observing all he could (which was a lot - he mentions a line where 'the universe exploding, because of one man's lie".) One thing is clear - Bono had a blast playing with the personas of that era. The Fly, Mr. MacPhisto - another character was the Mirrorball Man which was a sort of corrupted preacher. While Achtung Baby! is wrapped up in artifice and bright lights, it's an incredible dark and heavy record. Until the End of the World is literally about the Last Supper. Love is Blindness and Acrobat stand out as well if you want to go deep but there's lighter, fun stuff like Even Better than the Real thing; a celebration of sensory overload, hedonism and excess. Looking forward to hearing your thought, thanks o/
@@SattzFF Stay (Far Away, So Close) from Zooropa comes along. It was a song Bono did for German director Wim Wenders back in the 90s where the guys play angels. I always enjoyed it; there is a smokey/3am rough and haggard crooning to it that Bono really vibed on. Maybe consider that one if you've got time. Cheers!
Thanks for watching!
Best album ever!
By far!

Bono sings the high parts on this studio track ....Edge sings those parts when playing live
Monster of a song. The sound of 4 men chopping down the Joshua Tree
I heard of this album, do you think people would be interested watching a video if I reacted to all of it? Thanks for watching

It's pretty interesting all the concepts that Bono came up with, which should a good song to continue the U2 saga?
