They clearly didn't know exactly what "rules" Data was to go by during the first 2 seasons of Star Trek. The little smiles, the not-so-clear "does he feel, doesn't he feel?" character consistency, but he is really funny. And they really drew that line by Season 3, and it worked so well. There's something both adorable and cringy "uncanny valley" about watching Data trying to emulate humans but failing. Kudos to Spiner for pulling that off so well.

Always loved data .. and his naturenal and complex behavior..brent spiner is a wonderful actor...but honestly i also love lore because he is much more complex then data and his behavior towards humans is a mix of attractive and devil attitude...

But I literally have no idea, why he smiles like that in that other scene. Well, I guess since it's from the first ever episode (Encounter At Farpoint), they still had different ideas for Data's character, and maybe they just told him to smile. (Maybe out of pride for having inhuman strength?) But yea, he saves Wesley, so maybe he's just happy about that? Really, idk lol
