May-June 2023 Rail Action on Colorado's Western Slope, Amtrak Cal. Zephyr BNSF UP Rocky Mountaineer!
Amtrak P42DC passenger diesels pulled the storied California Zephyr over the mountainous Continental Divide, and down the Western Slope of the Rocky Mountains, in Colorado. On May 23, 2023, the Superliner train was running over four hours late, operating with an additional three private cars on the rear. The private luxury passenger cars were Boston & Maine "Salisbury Beach" built in 1954, Pennsylvania Railroad "Colonial Crafts" built in 1949, and Norfolk & Western "Lamberts Point" built in 1914.
More private varnish visited the scenic Moffat Tunnel Route on June 10, heading westbound. Along with the return of B&M "Salisbury Beach," there was Milwaukee Road "Super Dome" built in 1952, and former American European Express "Berlin," built as Union Pacific "Placid Lake" in 1956. Of course, freight trains traversed the Union Pacific Moffat Tunnel and Glenwood Springs subdivisions, including a Burlington Northern Santa Fe trackage rights train. Finally, the recently inaugurated luxury tourist train, Rocky Mountaineer, rounds out this spectacular railroad video.
