Which Junior Development League Is The "Best"?

- How do scouts compare prospects from different developmental leagues? Play aside, there is a little math to it, and it all boils down to how good the competition tends to be in each of the leagues. Now this set up more or less shows how leagues compare to each other scoring wise, so, of course, it may not be the best method for showing which leagues create the most pros, just how much scoring is worth in that league.
You got some really high quality hockey-related content. Definitely subbing.
Thanks man I really appreciate that! I've been subbed to you for a while on another account I have. Really means a lot!
You’re essentially comparing 16-19 yr olds to 18-24 yr olds. Just look at the talent coming out of the CHL. The NCAA is a close second but junior hockey in Canada is still the best cultivation of nhl prospects.
this is seriously good content, was surprised to see that you only have around 650 subs, now one more.
Thanks a lot, i really appreciate that. I'm trying to post some hockey related stuff to what's already out there. Glad you like it!
Thank you! This is something incredibly confusing to describe to my non-hockey friends.
sberryman19 Glad I could help!
I assume the ncaa leagues get a higher point ratio because they play less games a year also, not because they are more competitive
Yeah that's pretty much about 90% of the reason for the higher ratio.
BCHL is very underrated that league has produced some pretty good nhlers that currently play in the nhl i can name 5-7 players Jamie Benn,Jordie Benn,Tyler Bozak,Kyle Turris,Riley nash, Travis Zajac
Agreed
You forgot the Big 10 in the NCAA
Ya Boy Bennett Yeah I realized it after I uploaded it. The BIG 10 is equivalent to the WCHA. Sorry about that.
@@HybridIcing Not necessarily considering teams like Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan are in this conference
@@HybridIcing man the old WCHA back when I was in college early 2000s was a power house! UND, UofM, Wisconsin, St Cloud, Mankato, Denver and Duluth were all in one division!
Great video ! Honestly I much prefer the WHL. It’s more competitive and very much closer to NHL hockey. In which I always felt that many players develop much faster and are often offered contracts to play on the AHL (American hockey league) which is essentially a bigger door way to the NHL. But that’s just me. I love hockey all around. I wish I played it. I played rugby for the longest time and I must say Hockey is the greatest sport I’ve ever seen.
I’m a WHL fan so yeah 😂
WCHA is one of the worst conferences in the NCAA so it's weird you have them rated the best. Big Ten, NCHC, and Hockey East are the three elite conferences
In the CJHL you missed 5 leagues:
- Superior International Junior Hockey League (SIJHL) - Northwestern Ontario
- Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL) - Northeastern Ontario
- Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL) - Eastern Ontario
- Quebec Junior Hockey League (LHJQ) - Quebec
- Maritime Junior A Hockey League (MHL) - Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island (PEI)

THIS
My Favorite team from each Tier
OHL: Saginaw Spirit
NCAA (B1G): Michigan State Spartans
ECHL: Toledo Walleye
AHL: Grand Rapids Griffins
NHL: Detroit Red Wings
What about WHL
@@matthewmatyuk I'm from Michigan so I don't really follow the WHL enough to have a favorite team (plus if you really look at it the CHL is more of a Regional thing since people in Michigan and Ontario would watch the OHL over the WHL same with Quebec and the QMJHL)
The thing is age difference between the chl n ncaa, u got 16 year Olds playing. While ncaa is mostly men
I love watching ushl hockey
We as fans need to do better in supsupporting our developmental leagues
UPDATE: BCHL has broken up with Hockey Canada and is no longer of a part of the CJHL umbrella…
Thanks! This was really interesting - it makes me curious as to how European leagues compare
MK I'll definitely try to put something together for the European leagues as well!
The NCAA factors are high because they play fewer games.
For example Nyquist never hit 40 regular season games playing for University of Maine.
Compare that to the OHL where they play around 70 games a season.
You forgot about the CCHL
1. USHL
2. WHL
3. OHL
4. QMJHL
5. BCHL
6. AJHL
7. NAHL
8. OJHL
9. CCHL
10. NCDC
Where did you find this information regarding the math behind this?
There's a few books by Rob Vollman who works for the Kings now that cover this topic. He's an NHL stats guy that looks at how well specific players have their numbers translate from league to league
Lol you can't compare, NCAA are older players. Get real slick.
How does it work for goalies
how does it work for the goalies? do they use the same way as for points but for save % or GAA ?
I'm not sure there actually is any conversion for goalies. I think everyone has kind of accepted that goalie development is voodoo.
HybridIcing Alright, thanks!
What about NCDC
What about Europe looks where it got Auston Matthews
Manny Sigal he developed and started in the USHL (or the USNTDP) and afterwards left to join the NLA (Swiss league) to show how good he is for the upcoming draft and that he could immediately play in the nhl post draft, also European men leagues aren’t classified as junior leagues
junior hockey league
their are 4 junior a leagues you just cut
Go Saginaw Spirit of the OHL and Michigan State Spartans of the B1G
You missed 4 other leagues in the cjhl.
LHJMQ
None of these leagues “Develop” anyone 😂
They cherry pick players that were already cherry picked at the youth level. Very few high level teams at any level are doing much “development”, they are recruiting talent. You will rarely get a coach that teaches players unique concepts that change their trajectory to go on to become great players. They either got it or they don’t.
I’ve worked in the CHL and have a good relation with a former coach. I can tell you that what you’re saying is completely false and dumb.
100’the like
Whl is the best league is top league to me
Lmao to say that college produces more nhl players then the ohl is just plain wrong. Would like to know where u got this information. Chl is by far the best developmental league to have ever existed.
Guy Fucken Fieri I wasn't trying to say that at all. What I meant was that points are harder to come by in college than in say, the OHL or QMJHL. All this system looks at is point progression, which is why I said it wasn't a perfect system.
HybridIcing oh i see, i apologize great vid!
Guy Fucken Fieri No worries haha. After I made it I kind of expected someone to point that out. Glad it was the man himself, Guy Fieri.
HybridIcing 😂😂 love me some hockey after a long day of being the worlds coolest chef.
Guy Fucken Fieri idk I’ve always seen the debate between CHL and NCAA being players are playing against grown men in NCAA who are 21-25 whereas in the CHL is playing against younger players. Idk I think the debate can go on forever but I see it both ways being a college hockey fan in the states
You massively fucked up the NCAA (6 conferences) and US Junior (3 Tiers, 4 leagues) systems as well as leaving out the SIJHL in the CJHL.
USHL is def better than the Q rn, i could debate that it's better than the WHL and even OHL
Ehh. Might be on par with the Q but outside of Chicago and the u18 Nats non of those teams would make playoffs in the OHL or the dub
LMAOOOO, American fans can’t understand anything about hockey. Stick to football yankee
