The best recommendation you gave is when taking friends out on your boat make sure before going you tell them we are all gonna split the fuel up and tell them this amount is what we all are gonna chip in BEFORE you leave the dock! That way everyone knows going in what is expected as to contributing towards helping out with fuel. If they are good friends its usually not a problem at all. If it is a problem for some people then they probably shouldnt be on the boat in the first place!😎🍻

Great topic, these days especially. All of these tips make a ton of sense and many took me quite a few years to learn the hard way on my own. The hardest lesson for me was drawing the line with friends who were always eager to go out but never reached into their wallet to chip in and worse… left me to clean and square away my boat at the end of the day. Same type of folks often use your fishing gear, bait and then loose terminal gear without replacing it. Those folks don’t get invited out again. Solid video once again Clay. Thanks!

  • @rippstam

Could also drift fish instead of trolling. Another option is to get a kicker engine for trolling. For a small-medium CC, a 9.9 would likely push it good and use significantly less fuel.

I think you miss the point of the video totally. The points he made could be said for almost all sizes and number of motors. Of course he could get a sail boat and we could watch 3 hours of getting to the fishing spot. Not the intent of this channel. If I am a business, need to be as productive as can be. 6 hours to get there and back would be either outsourced or replaced with more economic solutions. I do dream of owning a boat like that some day and living near them for the fishing. Tampa bay has been decimated with the red tides year over year. Going to take a long time to recover.

Living in the Mid Atlantic, my trips aren't nearly as long as you guys in South Carolina or Florida.
I do a couple of week long trips using a 34' SeaRay mid-cabin. Usually it's a little over 500 miles and broken into two legs south, 4 days using a marina as a daily base camp and a single day run back.
The 5 or 6 of us kick in $250 a man, and take turns purchasing dinner for the captain (me). Because we make a first day stop at the same location every year, we found the best pricing for fuel (ag fuel that the crabbers and oyster-men use) at a substantial savings. Two 340hp Big Block Chevy''s aren't nearly as fuel efficient as your outboards. I'm happy to only burn 28 gph @ 22 mph.
With the price of fuel this year, good chance the late July trip is going to be postponed. We'll just add a few additional days Rock fishing this fall.
About trailering your 39 Contender. Do you purchase a yearly wide load permit or just roll the dice with the hopes of not being jacked by DOT? I'm going to make an assumption of 3,000lbs trailer, 8,200 for the truck and 15,400 for the boat, and you're in the realm of a required CDL

My dad loved having his boat in a slip, but hated the cost of gas on the water. He kept a few 5 gallon cans in his truck and filled them on land to keep the boat fueled.

    • @LifeByTheBow
      @LifeByTheBow  ปีที่แล้ว

That's a great idea. I know down here we have the option of having the fuel truck come to where ever you are. I'm not sure if that is a thing everywhere. You have to have a minimum order and it is usually a similar price as the normal gas station.

  • @jeffk9405

Do not use any fuel with alcohol (E10) especially if you have large fuel tanks that you never run close to empty. If you run on portable fuel tanks you should be ok if you run them empty. After about 3 years you will get a build up of alcohol in your fuel tank as the alcohol easy separates from the gas. My motors started to run really rough and had no acceleration. I had a mechanic at the marina come down and look at my motors. He popped off the cowling and on the side of the motor he used a small screw driver to bleed the fuel. He could tell by the feel it was pure alcohol. The repair shop was able to siphon off 5 gallons of excess alcohol out of a 300 gallon tank that had separated from the fuel in my boat. It does not mix back together like you think it would. I was lucky I did not blow up my motors. I will only buy alcohol free fuel which usually costs about .90 a gallon more.

What is the boat ramp situation there?
Is it busy? How many are there? Are they mostly public or private ramps?
Cost at a private ramp and do they launch, park your trailer and re-trailer your boat?
Sorry for all the questions but our plan is to move down there from Minnesota within a couple of years and I HAVE TO FISH.
We have literally thousands of free, public boat ramps here. Even so it can get packed and you might have a long wait if you don't get there early.

Boats are supposed to run e10 or less where as cars are supposed to run e15 and higher.... the only exception to the ethanol content in cars is e85 or flex fuel capable vehicles. Even the boat manufacturers rec. That you not run anything over e10 in the manuel.
