    As a chess player I have a great interest in these as it helps date the introduction of chess into Europe.

    The round markers look like they were possibly draughts/checkers pieces. They appear to be around the same diameter as the chess pieces and could be playable on the same sized board as the chess pieces. I know the game of draughts was around at the time period that the pieces are attributed, but I'm not sure if it was known this far north at the time. I would imagine it probably was since it was being played in France since at least 1100 CE. Very cool pieces, it's a shame there's controversy.

    @JustaEropeanGuy Thanks for your Comment!
    Yeah, apparently Bezerkers would feed extremely powerful mushrooms to reindeer and then drink the urine which was expelled... It sounds foul, but it was the only way to 'safely' ingest the plant matter and gain its 'benefits'! Eventually the practice was phased out though as it was hazardous to EVERYONE, not just the intended victims! haha.
    Re: the other... I must ask 'Ancient Aliens Series'?
    Thanks again!

    It''s more likely that the local man, a farmer , found the limestone coffin due to the tide, ebb and flow; all the Lewis chessmen showing bulging eyes as if they'd seen something astonishing.The Queen piece shows a worried expression while in her left hand she grasped a drinking horn.

    @JustaEropeanGuy Whilst this does look interesting, for whatever reason I cannot seem to find copies of the programmes!
    Might I recommend Archyfantasies... She is very good at this kind of thing! (see my recommendations on the Channel Home Page!)

    It would be great to get the complete set of these, not just the 32 needed for a game, but all of them. Maybe I don't like some of them! Maybe I am not in the mood to have a shied eating berserker for a rook on a particular day! Or maybe I am... BERSERK!!!!! Even better would be to have all the pieces in two colors: Red and White! What ever... IMHO

    In this video they talk of who has a right to claim country "ownership" of the pieces. Well, I think I know how they can settle that dispute...

      @@Archaeos0up, I am not surprised that they were found in Scotland - yet England "acquired" them.... Just like how they acquire countries.
