Super budget friendly survival shotgun. Savage - Stevens 301 break action single shot in .410 bore

  • If you’re looking for a budget friendly easy-to-use shotgun, the Savage-Stevens 301 may just be for you.
    It says Savage on the box, and the website is Savage.com, but I think Savage-stevens is the mother company- says “Stevens model 301” on the barrel
    It comes in 12 gauge, 20 gauge, .410 bore, standard 26” length barrels, compact 22” barrel, and a special turkey version.
    Super simple break action with spring loaded ejector, manual safety, screw in chokes, bead site... all for under $200
    Great value, and they function just fine.

    The manual saftey switch keeps the hammer off firing pin so if you drop the gun or pull hammer back and decide not to shoot the hammer won't fall against firing pin and go off when you do not want it to. The manual saftey is there for those around you so you won't accindently fire the gun off. Use The Saftey!

      @@rayjohn3946 this particular gun has a transfer bar like a modern revolver, so if the hammer is down, it physically can never hit the firing pin, also the safety can only be engaged if the hammer is cocked, and if you pull the trigger, the hammer drops onto the safety, then you have to re-cock the hammer to turn the safety off… with a transfer bar, you don’t need this manual safety, except when you want to carry it hammer back in your example for hunting to keep the gun from “clicking” when you cock the hammer

    • @Kaelland
      @Kaelland ปีที่แล้ว

      It's interesting that you say that, because I have never fired #7.5 or #8 shot through my .410. I've always used #4 or #6. Works great on rabbits, squirrels, and possums. Kind of pushing it for big raccoons, but #4 and #6 still do the job on them, too. I do have some #5, but I haven't used any of it yet.
      Are #7.5 and #8 the best shot sizes for .410 because they maintain the best pattern density the farthest? And do the little pellets still retain sufficient energy for humane kills at the maximum range that the pattern is dense enough to still be useable?

      @Kaelland ปีที่แล้ว

      4 or 5 pellets of 000 buck is a fairly popular buckshot load for .410. Federal used to make a 9-pellet #4 buckshot load. Not sure if they still do. A company called Gurel has made a 2.5" .410 shell loaded with 9 pellets of #TT buckshot, although I think #TT is technically one of the larger sizes of birdshot rather than an actual buckshot.
      Point being: Buckshot rounds for the .410 exist, if you can find them. There's also the option to load your own if you're into that sort of thing.
