"This dude over here in the corner" is Remedy's boss, Sam Lake. He literally fought for this section to be in the game. There are 3 versions of the song: a studio version with extended guitar solos (12 minutes long), this OMV version, and a radio edit (4 minutes long or so). Also, it was performed at the Game Awards a couple of weeks ago.

Do we need to also say that Alex Casey which is played by Sam Lake (Actor / Model) and James McCaffrey (Voice actor - Rest in Peace as he died not long after Alan Wake 2's release). Is a meta recreation of a previous New York detective Max Payne (a previous Remedy series) which uses Sam Lakes likeness and James' voice. James also voices the director of control in remedy's title 'Control'.
Alex Casey is the written in reality version of Max Payne created by Alan Wake in the novels he didn't know he dreams writing into fiction. Alex Casey is Sam Lake and Max Payne - Both literal fiction and non fiction versions (in game). Not to also mention Poets of the fall have previously been in remedy title dating back to Max Payne 2 with Late Goodbye.
I think I might have confused myself trying to understand the level of meta analysis but correct me if I'm wrong in anyway. Do I need to go on about the meta analysis of Dr Darling?

Alan Wake is a horror game, and the song summarizes his life (as well as the first game) into one musical you can play through in the game. The lyrics are pretty literal as crazy as that sounds, but only make sense when you play through both games. The Old Gods of Asgard were a rock band made up of the brothers Odin(Marko) and Tor(Markus) along with Bob Balder(Olli) and Loki. They've got some pretty deep lore in the game and their songs appear in many games that the Remedy game studio puts out. They've put out an album called Rebirth that gathers up all the songs that were made for various games under the Old Gods alias.

I have a question! Why is the ending different in the new game plus? Alan Wake 3 confirmed or Control 2 confirmed? What the hell is going on? I know 2 DLC coming next year but Alan Wake 3? I hope! We have lot of questions about his wife and Warlin Door and more… Somebody can tell me what is the truth?

    • @DeeDust
      @DeeDust 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +23

@@Horrorizacio It's different because it's following what Alan says in the first ending, he's living through a spiral. Each time he goes through the same events but he takes a little from the previous attempt and changes things. So new game plus is the player going down the next level of the spiral, taking what they know along, and getting a different ending. It's kinda implied Alan has done this loop several times before the game and the new game plus ending is the one he's been aiming for the whole time.
No Alan Wake 3 confirmed, but the DLCs coming will continue the story and it is theorized they will lead to Control 2. We won't know until they come out. All we know for sure is that they have put out a press release saying they are working on Control 2. No dates or anything.

Alan is basically stuck in a dream where he's on a talk show for a book he doesn't remember writing. The old gods members are 2 brothers in their 90s who can see the future and write their visions into songs. In the dream world, they appear as their younger selves and with their dead band mate back alive.

The very basic premise of Alan Wake 1 & 2 is that Alan Wake, who's a famous novelist, gets trapped in a nightmare dimension that's beneath a lake, where his writings can become a reality and affect our dimension, mostly in screwed up ways. Tonally, the games are Stephen King meets Twin Peaks.
This song basically sums up the events of the first game and it's in the actual second game, where Alan in trapped in an endless loop of this musical and has to find a way out of the song (hence why he looks so uncomfortable when he's dancing, lol).
My favourite "Old Gods Of Asgard" song is 'The Poet and the Muse' (from Alan Wake 1), which tells you the backstory of a character from both games in a very cool way.
I highly recommend listening to it.

Alan Wake is a very cinematic game about art and creation and how it can change reality. (In a nutshell.) The old gods of asgard are actually characters in the games as well although they are way older in the game timeline. However you can hear a lot of their songs in the games. Herald of Darkness is actually in the second game as well as kind of a playable musical section and a change to the overall dark tone of the story. Oh and Alan is a writer of crime novels whose fiction is coming true.

I see a lot of comments on the premise of Alan Wake so I wont write all that out, but I should mention that the song is the nightmare dimension screwing with him. Context wise, and confusing it may be, hes not actually dancing or singing until the very last scene when hes seen it so much that hes memorised it, hence why he looks so confused walking to the chair, and the smile after over how weird it was. Hope that explained a bit! 😊

Alan Wake is a psychological horror series with a VERY quirky sense of humor occasionally and randomly thrown in. Basically it’s the story of a writer (Alan Wake) being stuck inside of a horror story he’s written/is writing, but that story is being manipulated by an evil dark presence. So the two face off by changing the story over and over, keeping Alan stuck there in a neverending nightmare story. This musical section is both a source of LEVITY for the player, and a quick recap of Alan’s past to remind HIMSELF of what he’s trying to do (escape and reunite with his wife who previously escaped).

Another good Finnish song to hear is "Sankarin Tango" or "Tango of the Hero".
It's a song that plays in Control, another game from Remedy (the same developers behind Alan Wake).
The singer is Martti Suosalo, the face and voice of the character Ahti from Control and Alan Wake 2 (most of Remedy games are set in the same universe).
The lyrics are in Finnish and connect multiple Remedy Games.
Martti Suosalo also has a song in Alan Wake 2 called "Yötön yö" or "Nightless Night".
It's another song in Finnish about the game he is in and the story.
It references a certain in-game movie of the same name.
That movie is also viewable in game and is 15-20 minutes long.

It's a horror game. That's why it was such a left-field genius move to put a musical section in the game. Alan is trapped in a Dark Place where written things can come alive. The reason why he looks scared is because suddenly he has to take a part in the musical. The Poets of the Fall has like 10 songs as Old Gods, and they even made a blues song on another video game, it's called "Poets of the Fall - Grinder's Blues". Pretty rocking tune, check it out. 🤘

so for those who don't know, this segment in the game is written as a musical cuz alan is trying to keep the evil from twisting his story so he makes it a musical, the reason olli glows in the video sometimes, is because his character, bald bob, or baldur, of the old gods of asgard, is dead, the only two living members left are odin/marko, and tor/markus, but the "music video" takes place in the dark world where baldur's spirit comes back to join them for this song, it makes a lot more sense when you know the story of the games, but in short, this song is to guide alan further along, and then later in the game they play a song called dark ocean summoning which is the song they perform to bring alan back from the dark place, but fun fact, they perform this song AFTER dark ocean summoning, because things happen out of order in the game, it's pretty cool, if your not gonna play it, watcha playthrough such a good story

One interesting fact about Alan Wake, and especially in this music video, is that the he is actually played by 2 different actors. The Finnish actor ilkka villi is the face and physical likeness of Alan Wake and Matthew Porretta is the voice of Alan. Those of a slightly older generation might remember seeing Matthew in Beverley Hills, 90210 when he was younger.
Also, another great Old Gods of Asgard song from the same game is Dark Ocean Summoning, which is less of a musical number than this one.

Alan Wake 2 was an absolutely amazing video game and continues from the first of course. But this game was a huge step up from the first and even earned a spot for potential game of the year but lost to Balders Gate 3. But it’s very rare for horror games to achieve a spot for game of the year. What’s even more crazy is this entire music video was almost not going to go into the game because they thought it would be to odd with the story and not make much sense but in the end they made it work and it ended up being everyone’s favorite part of the entire game and a huge hit and everyone who did it of course had a lot of fun and this is mostly why it earned a spot for game of the year.
As for the story premise, the simplest way to put it is Alan Wake is a author of horror novels however when he goes to a certain place in the game and writes there his stories somehow come alive meaning the horror within as well. Later on he gets trapped from one of his own creations who tries to take over his place and his name is Mr.Scratch who is an evil doppelgänger variation of Alan Wake. Parts of the game take place is a dark upside down version of the town he’s trapped in sorta like Stranger Things upside down where you fight these like shadow enemies and creatures and then the rest is in the real world where some of the dark creations from the fictional world are leaking into the real world. In Alan Wake 2 he’s not the only main protagonist. There’s also a FBI agent you play as named Saga Anderson who has supernatural abilities she is not aware of at first . The games story can get kinda hectic because alot happens and Alan Wake sorta has a power too but it’s mostly because of a supernatural item and after he realizes his dark stories are becoming reality he tries to constantly rewrite his books to fix it and make the dark realities become normal and stable but then since he’s also trapped and with Mr.Scratch, he keeps forcing Alan to like go back on his own writings and it’s like this sorta loop he’s trapped in or something. It’s all sorta difficult to explain and I’m probably not doing my best but it’s a very very good story. And it ends on a cliffhanger meaning there likely will be a third game.

To summarize what has been already told down here : Alan Wake (2 especially) is literally Twin Peaks the game with more horror and action. Old Gods of Asgard is a band whom the musicians changed their names to co-opt Scandinavians gods and actually used (before the saga's games) the power and inspiration from the entity hidden in Cauldron Lake.
Unlike Alan Wake, their music and new identity have enabled them to keep their feet firmly on reality and commune with forces far beyond the standard world. Their characters have a whole lore and appear in various Remedy games (notably Control).

I actually discovered Poets of the Fall through playing the first Alan Wake and there is a song called The Poet and the Muse which actually plays aa important part in the game. It’s an Old Gods of Asgard song. Poets “War” also appears in the game. Both these songs made me want to know more about the Poets. They also have a long relationship with Remedy (the game makers) and its creative director Sam Lake (the blonde dude in the video) who is just one of the nicest guys in the gaming world. Sam asked Marko to write a song for Max Payne 2 and he did and performed it with the Poets, you might have heard it. Late Goodbye. But then the Poets and the Old Gods show up throughout Remedy’s games like Alan Wake’s Nightmare and Control which features a few Old Gods songs and also Poets “My Dark Disquiet” which I still think is the best Bond song that’s not actually a Bond song. With Alan Wake 2 (which I have not played yet myself) they have another clutch of songs including Herald of Darkness which apparently plays over a section of the game and which tells of more of the plot of the first Alan Wake in that he’s gone on a vacation with his wife and as he has writers block his wife has got him a typewriter but then gets drawn into a dark nightmare world when his wife vanishes and the cabin they’ve hired holds a dark secret as well as the Lake it’s by. It’s very good and I believe a TV adaptation is in the early stages but that’s gone quiet. The first game is definitely worth checking out though and it was remastered a few years ago. Anyway, from one Poets of the Fall fan to another. Enjoy 🙂

In game this song is entire level. Player (Alan Wake himself is main character) going through maze-like decorations level solving puzzles and fighting enemies. And this musical happens on screens and on walls and progresses when player progresses forward. Final part of song happens in end and followed by transition (this blinking light) back to gameplay from empty dark TV studio.
Theme of darkness is important in story, darkness is main antagonist, enemies are possessed people who must be weakened with light and only then can be defeated. Light is main weapon and protection.

As someone mentions, this song pretty much sums up Alan's life as a whole and makes much more sense in video game or with context of it...
Essentially, this song happens as a part of Alan Wake 2 game... Alan Wake after first game gets stuck in so called Dark Place for 13 years and he is trying to escape... within the game his chapters always start with a talk show that is hosted by Mr. Door and Alan essentially needs to find a way out of it. He manages to find his way out of the studio two times and each time gets looped back into it, so on his third attempt he essentially thinks he has it all figured out and then this happens, which is why if you pay attention Alan Wake (scruffy beard guy) looks confused throughout the entire song...
In game itself, player controls Alan through a winding corridor of the studio with scenes from this video playing on large panels... it's a well made level and song loops seamlessly whenever player lags behind and some videos playing in game even have characters pointing to player where to go...

I found out about Poets of the Fall when I was playing Alan Wake 1 and the song "The Poet and the Muse" started playing. I'd been listening to the song for 11ish years, and then Alan Wake 2 was here. Unbelievable.
The dude that does the silly dance in the corner (1:41) is Sam Lake. He's the guy that owns my heart and soul. The Creative Director and the Lead Writer of the development team Remedy. In Alan Wake 2, he was also the Game Director, won Best Narrative, Best Art Direction, and the Best Game Direction awards with Alan Wake 2.
Don't know what it is about Finland, but it seems it's the birthplace of talent itself. Many of the bands I love are from Finland. Nightwish, the Rasmus, HIM (Ville Valo), Amorphis, Children of Bodom, Eternal Tears of Sorrow, and Wintersun. And ofc, then there's Sam Lake (and Remedy) and Ilka Villi, the man that plays the role of Alan Wake (Alan Wake's voice is Mathew Porretta).
Ilka Villi also played a role in Imaginaerum movie, and Nightwish has done most of the soundtracks.

Alan wake is a horror game series about a writer who fights against evil shadowly entities. Its a really good bizarre series. Think X-files meets The Twilight Zone meets Twin Peaks.
In the games, 2 old men who were rockers had also faced the same enitiy and defeated with their music at the cost of their sanity. They are the band playing in this video.
This scene is when Alan is in an alternate dimension where crazy things happen. Most of the level is a musical

Alan Wake 1 was a suspense game with some horror elements, Alan Wake 2 is very much survival horror. Ala Resident Evil, Walking Dead etc. Alan is a tortured writer (aren't they all?) this song explains the events of Alan Wake 1, The reason why this seems like a fever dream is because it is. Alan is trapped inside his own mind, The bizzare nature of this is Alan trying to guide himself out of his nightmare world of his own design. What you see in this video is largely what appears in the game except it is projected to the player (playing as Alan) on large screens in the game environment. Its probably one of the most innovative things I've seen in a game in some time. Its absolutely bonkers but also absolutely amazing.
For other Old God's songs I definitely recommend Take Control (from the game Control) and also Dark Ocean Summoning from the end of Alan Wake 2.

Its weird sometimes to differentiate the music because there are a few Old Gods songs that sound like they COULD be Poets of the Fall songs with a few tweaks but by and large Marko and the gang do an amazing job of making Old Gods feel like a 80's hard rock/heavy metal band (and I mean that in the good Judas Priest way, not the silly 80's glam metal). Poets to me is a band that is very hard to peg but I feel they generally stay in a more accessible lane. Old God's leans heavily in to the more scattered metal elements in some of the poets songs. And it perfectly fits the image of them being old norse gods. (Odin, Tor and Baldur)

Like they've said here, the lyrics are pretty much a retelling of Alan's backstory but most importantly the important bits of the first game. Almost all the games of this developer have a great mix of pretty serious/dark tones and goofy, off the wall sense of humour, like this video

You're not far off in saying the Old Gods of Asgard are Alan's muse. I'd argue they're more like narrators, occasionally sneaking clues and pertinent information into their songs. The reason Alan is cringing the whole time is because this is a legitimate wtf moment and really has little reason to be occurring. The player's reaction tends to be some combination of "wtf" and pure delight.

Context: I'm a big gamer ever since I was 6, played the first Alan Wake when it came out. Before that, in 2001, played Max Payne - "this dude in the corner" 's face is the main character, also he's the main writer and creative director for the studio "Remedy" since that, pretty much. The lyrics are stock full of things happening in the games, it's like they're embodying the life of Alan Wake, which makes it so heartfelt for a fan of the games.
Regardless of all this, I love that even a person such as yourself who has no experience with the games can appreciate the awesome music and the "weirdness" and have a very unforgettable experience with this - it's a true testament to the work of the band and the lyrics / writing team - not to mention all the lore and choreography work etcetc that allows for so much of Alan's character life to come to life - pardon the pun.

This segment of the game signifies a change in the storyline that was originally written by Alan Wakes arch nemesis Mr Scratch. It was a victory for Wake because he was able to reshape the story enough to survive, and move to the next segment and fight again. Side note, it was the best part of the game, I kept bogging down watching the video on the big screens. If you would like to see it, the vid is on my page here.

Alan Wake is just a writer who is basically trapped in a nightmare dimension trying to find his way out (see this brief 15 min recap by Sam Lake th-cam.com/video/uzocqRZzyoI/w-d-xo.html). In Alan Wake 2 just before this "We Sing" chapter he thinks he is finally in control, no more surprises, he will find his way out. And then OGOA starts playing and you need to find your way through a rock musical, lol.
So yeah POTF has been doing music for Remedy games since 2003 (Late Goodbye), first as POTF and as OGOA since 2010. But that doesn't mean we also hear Poets of the Fall in the games :)) such as Control th-cam.com/video/EpiahpKp-VA/w-d-xo.html. In Alan Wake 2 there were 8 OGOA songs, some earlier releases and some written particularly for the game

Short form, Alan is trapped in a dark realm. This sequence came out of *nowhere*, and is an interactive musical. As Alan, you're walking through stage set pieces with large screens all over. The sections of this video play on those screens, it's why so many sections of this video feature rectangles. That's also why Alan looks so confused and frustrated in the video. The third part directly covers the events of the first game.

There is a lot going on. Alan Wake is a novel writer, he had been suffering from writer's block for a couple of years due to stress, so he and his wife Alice go to a romantic getaway (his wife hope this will get him over the slump since he has been miserable and kinda explosive since he got it). They go to a toen called "Bright Falls", to a lake cabin, unknown to them, said lake is home/prison to an evil entity known as "The Darkness" and it grants extremely creative people a power to kinda make true their art. The Darknes kidnaps Alice to entice Alan to write a story to save her, granting more power to the darkness and eventually set it free. Alan is it's 3rd known victim, the other 2 being Tom Zane (a poem witer gone missing) and "The Old Gods Of Asgard" (a couple of brothers very famous in their time, long since forgotten and with apparent dementia). Turns out both previous victims stopped the darkness at the cost of their well being, Tom wrote himself and almost everything he wrote, out of existence, and the gods went crazy to the point were their creativity became nonsensical rambling so they would stop being a danger. But both of them paved the way for Alan by wrting about how he would be the one who would defeat the darkness.
At the end of the first game, he manages to free his wife at the cost of his own freedom, she returns to the real world, while he gets stuck in "The Dark Place" (the darkness home dimension) and he has been stuck there for over a decade trying to find a way out by writing, hence why he looks uncomfortable in the music video, because he is actually a prisoner, and the host of the show, Mr. Door, supposedly is an interdimensional being, he has apparent ties to most Remedy games as a figure of power of sort, or an observer. I haven't actually played AW2 since im waiting for a physical release so I'm not sure if it's identity is explained or something...
All in all, Alan Wake is a great story, and can be easily enjoyed as a movie by watching someone else play it if you are not into gaming, i eould recommend to give it a try.

If you're interested in more Old Gods that don't have the musical vibe I'd recommend the entire Rebirth album. The Poets dropped an Album earlier this month that compiles all their music performed as Old Gods of Asgard. It does heavily spoil some things in the games but it is wild ride if you're a Poets fan.

If you like "herald of darkness" you might wanna check out "take control" also by poets of the fall. I was playing the scenario to herald of darkness 2 days ago. Its an in game Musical scene with many stages, displays and amps where you find yourself asking "am i in the right game". Then Hordes of enemies appear. Hard to beat (Duh it has Been 13 years since i played the first Alan wake) But if you die and repeat you get to hear the Song over and over again probably that has the effect of me finding myself standing in the shower singing "herald of darkness"... Arrgh such a good Song i have to go Listen to this Song again.

I love Poets of the Fall (and their alter-ego The Old Gods of Asgard).
In Alan Wake 2 where this occurs the music and these live action segments are happening around you as you explore further in the level. It's really quite an experience that can only be fully appreciated by playing it. It is kind of silly and not serious about very serious events that have happened in the game series to Alan Wake, but due to the nature of the game and its setting and the long history of the Old Gods / Poets of the Fall in the series it works out really well. They have a long history with Remedy and their music is a big part of the shared lore between the Alan Wake and Control games. (Also, technically Poets of the Fall also exist in that same world too.)
If it looks like Alan isn't enjoying the song, at least at first, it's probably because it's against his will and he really doesn't understand what's happening at first. The setting of the Dark Place where this happens has the power to bring art and musical expression to life, but it's also extremely dangerous, so I am sure Alan is also on guard the whole time. The Old Gods of Asguard are close allies to Alan though.
Poets of the Fall and the rest of the cast got to perform this at The Game Awards live recently. The video is on TH-cam. I highly recommend watching it. It's fun seeing how much they get into it.
Also, the "guy in the corner" dancing at the beginning and other parts of the creative director of Remedy, Sam Lake, who also portrays some characters in the game.
I love this music video and its associated sequence and the game so much because it is the coming together of many things I think are pretty awesome, and I think they did it really well. I still think about this song even weeks later.
I think it's worth checking out the other songs by them in the Alan Wake games (Alan Wake, Alan Wake's American Nightmare, Alan Wake II) and Control. I think they're pretty good.

The reason why Alan looks so scared and confused is because he’s trapped in “The Dark Place” controlled by “The Dark Presence”. The Dark Place is described as being dream like where reality shifts. There are those that get lost in the dark place, but Alan is a writer and can nudge the reality of the dark place to follow a story. However, he constantly finds himself restarting at the talk show, promoting a book he doesn’t remember writing.

I was going to write and answer a bunch of questions you had, but the top "liked" comments already do a great job of explaining most of it :)
The "host" is probably (most likely) some type of spirit/entity/demon... and As you guessed, this all happens in a nightmare realm. This song happens in the very middle of the 2nd game, and the actual video clip plays in the game while you fight your way through a maze in the dark, every places where you saw the members of the band or actors pointing left or right meant you had to go that way to progress in the game. So while this song pretty much explains what happened before Alan Wake 1 as well as the first game, what happens "after" this song is actually in the game Alan Wake 2 :)

I would highly recommend at least watching a playthrough of the Alan Wake games because the universe is really unique.
But OGOA is basically the in universe band played by Poets.
Alan Wake is a writer who basically gets trapped in his own manuscript. That's putting it very, very simply to avoid spoilers. I would recommend playing the games for yourself for the full experience but if you just want to watch the games I'd recommend finding a non-commentary playthrough. That way you know what goes where and the band would make more sense to you. But even so, the games themselves are just really well written.
