  • Eshu is an incredibly important orisha because everyone has to go through him whether be the living or dead. Those who want to have access to the other orisha must call upon eshu to open the door to the spirit world, therefore he will be present at every single orisha event. And an offering will be made to him regardless of who you are worshiping. He is also a Psychopomp which means he guides the dead to the afterlife.

    Eshu is not evil
    Saying that African spirituality is evil is like saying Christianity is because of the crusaders and Islam is because of the taliban.
    You can’t a small amount of individuals determine your opinion on a religion

    Bless you for being so CLEAR about the most common and racist misunderstanding of Ancient African Spirituality! Colonization has destroy the practice of #TRUTH, #JUSTICE, and #EQUITY among humankind, yet African Spirituality has all the wisdom we need to turn this deadly insanity around. Bless you for helping make this possible by such fantastic educational material on the Orishas! This video is one of the BEST I have seen on Eshu Elegbara!

    Thank you for making these videos. I like learning about different religions and mythologies, and by extension the cultures surrounding them. The Yoruba religion has been on my list for a long time and I find it a lot easier to learn when I have a jumping on point (be that a single important concept, book or list of deities). Through your videos I learned about the 7 African Powers and have been watching and reading a ton to get a more solid first step into this surprising and fun pantheon.
    The stories behind the Orishas, their personalities and interactions, the systems they build and lessons they learn, and even the humanity they embody has me excited to learn even more. Eshu in particular captivates me. Like 99% of the world I like tricksters, especially when there's a well meaning lesson behind their antics. Eshu gives me the impression of one of those wise mentors who keep all their knowledge to themselves and annoy their students (and often the audience) with riddles until the student learns their lesson the hard way so that it sticks better than it otherwise would have. While also being a fun love to hate, but also just love him kind of guy.

    US media depicted papa legba wrong, those images are actually Baron Samedi from Haitian or Louisiana Vodou (I believe).

    • @stayout9
      @stayout9 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, Disney used Baron Samedi for the image of the Doctor...the black suit, top hat, skull face, colourful personality. Media always get him mixed with Papa Leg a and/or Ellegua, since they're all colourful trickster spirits of the crossroads...

    I think Eshu symbolizes "problems" or more precisely "issues"... maybe his name is where the term "issue" originated from... but... a person could use these words "Eshu" or "Issue" interchangeably and still mentally keep an understanding of what the sentence is talking about... It is said that we all have unresolved Eshus/issues... that we can learn lessons from by resolving them... also I believe that the Spanish word "alegua" like "Elegua" may mean "talk"... hmmm... maybe Elegua Eshu symbolizes talking out our issues... also... The Ancient Egyptian ferryman that pilots the boat across Lilly Lake to The Field of Reeds is named Href-Hef... like Eshu he also has two faces... one facing toward the dead person that's his passenger... and the other facing the destination of the spirit world or heaven called The Field of Reeds... I believe this is also Eshu... because the passenger has to "talk" to the ferryman and say the right things to "resolve the issue" with the ferryman and Eshu is known to guide people between destinations... he's known to be able to travel between Heaven and Earth.
