The biggest thing i hate about being in fandoms nowadays is how no character is allowed to have platonic relationships with anyone anymore. Like, Riley and Val are clearly just good friends, yet these degenerate adults online have to sexualize them together and force them into a strange ship?? It happens in every fandom I've been a part of, especially to characters who have a close bond that is entirely non-romantic. The most frustrating part is that a lot of movies, shows, books, etc. use relationship dynamics to expand upon and build the stories they're telling, like Samwise and Frodo in LOTR. But the then fans come along and say screw it, these two characters who care about and love each other in a platonic way shall be forced into a lover's arc together because GAY. it's so so stupid and i despise it.
Not even just fictional. People across the world now think Achilles was gay because of how upset he was when his best friend was killed. Despite the fact that there are numerous stories of him sleeping with women and that homosexuality wasn't normalized in that part of Greece for hundreds of years. Two men cared about each other, so they must be gay. Pretty homophobic idea if you think about it.
why does it even matter? i just assume every character is straight until proven otherwise because heterosexuality is quite literally the global majority
The irony is that the people doing this are unknowingly agreeing with the negative stereotype regarding queer people - just because someone has dyed their hair doesn't make them queer, yet the same people pushing this on a fictional child would get upset if someone applied their logic to them.
because these people don’t think through anything. if they stopped for even a moment to analyze what they’re doing, their worldview completely collapses in on itself.

if hypothetically in an alt universe riley WAS queer then what? why does a madeup character from an animated movie have so much importance to know if she's queer??? why does it matter so much?? there are many ways to waste intelligence and this is one of them!
Because representation matters due to people still taking queer rights. The problem is people assuming riley is gonna be queer and then deciding the movie is unwatchable and hate on it but lets ignore on that problem too shall we?
The main part of this is the fact that queer rights are still constantly pulled into question across the world and giving queer representation in media is good as it not only allows queer people to find a character they can connect with but also puts queer people into the public eye and shows that they are just normal people like everybody else and doing that can have great effects (also it pisses off conservatives which is always a plus lol)
Even if Riley isn't straight, why is this a topic of discussion at all?? The movie is about new and overwhelming emotions, that are still good for you in the long run, not sexuality. This isn't a conversation to have over a fictional child
The purpose of inside out is really cool. We grew up with the first movie, just like how Riley did, and now in the second movie she's grown up, but we're also grown up and can relate to the movie. Genius
What if the people saying she’s queer coded aren’t adults? Most teenagers, especially queer teenagers, tend to project their own experiences into fictional characters. The argument of her liking guys isn’t exactly fair considering bisexual people exist, perhaps she has a male preference. Also, people ship straight children with each other all the time, so the fact that when it’s gay it suddenly becomes problem just reeks of a homophobic double standard. Also there are certain queer experiences like dyeing your hair that they can relate to with Riley. Not too mention it’s over her wanting the validation of someone of the same gender so there can be a reading to that. All that being said, this isn’t queer baiting and it’s just a headcannon. A headcannon is your own idea about a character based on the text, or in this case, movie. People discussing this has nothing to do with what someone who can’t relate to those experiences has to say. It’s literally such a nothing problem to start.
Unrelated note for a sec, I think the movie did a pretty good job on portraying the awkward moments teenagers have, I recoiled in my chair when Riley had that scene with first meeting red hair girl (forgot her name)
Kind of funny how the same people who say that clothes have no gender, wearing makeup, doing anything in general doesn't have a gender or it doesn't make you gay but they are the same ones who will label everyone as gay for the smallest most insignificant thing
This is kinda like the Spider Gwen is trans thing from Spiderverse, people will make leaps in logic for something they want and it’s just kinda dumb especially when it’s clear that some things weren’t meant to have a deeper meaning in such a way
not saying i think shes queer but what about minors 😭🙏 like projecting on a character you relate to (which riley was DEFINITELY a relatable character to minors/early teens especially in the movie) does in fact exist and its very common with kids her age

There was nothing in the movie that implies Riley is gay for Val. She's only tryharding so she can hangout with the cool kids, which is a classic trope to every coming-of-age movies.
lowkey as someone who frequents twitter, most of the people doing this are also teenagers. I think you might be exaggerating how significant of an issue this is. (to incite rage for interactions cough cough omg who said that). Like if you clicked on any random profile in a post about the girls sexuality, it would most likely be some random 13-16 year old who went to see the movie with their parents. After seeing the movie they went “omg thats so me!!” and started projecting themselves onto the character. While yes the adults participating in this should keep their opinions on a childs sexuality to themselves, this is not as big of a problem as you think it is. Also, the red streak (from what ive seen) has mostly been commented on as a joke. I do not think a majority of people are that slow. Also also, i found the account of the user sos 💋 (as you left their full DN + UN, making it very easy to harass them if I was…hm…suspecting them of being a weirdo about children?), while yes they do frequently tweet about sexual things, they never state their age in their profile. They still live with their parents, which means they could have been a minor themselves. Along with the person who replied, who is ACTUALLY a minor. Could you not have found more evidence from actual adults?

The biggest thing i hate about being in fandoms nowadays is how no character is allowed to have platonic relationships with anyone anymore. Like, Riley and Val are clearly just good friends, yet these degenerate adults online have to sexualize them together and force them into a strange ship?? It happens in every fandom I've been a part of, especially to characters who have a close bond that is entirely non-romantic. The most frustrating part is that a lot of movies, shows, books, etc. use relationship dynamics to expand upon and build the stories they're telling, like Samwise and Frodo in LOTR. But the then fans come along and say screw it, these two characters who care about and love each other in a platonic way shall be forced into a lover's arc together because GAY. it's so so stupid and i despise it.

if hypothetically in an alt universe riley WAS queer then what? why does a madeup character from an animated movie have so much importance to know if she's queer??? why does it matter so much?? there are many ways to waste intelligence and this is one of them!

Crazy that no one in this side of the discussion had the braincells to even consider that
Genuinely, people tend to be close-minded and automatically assume something based on a pattern and dumb it down to just that, a stereotype

lowkey as someone who frequents twitter, most of the people doing this are also teenagers.
