As an s2k owner, it’s still king. But I also haven’t owned or driven an NSX. If you could have the s2k as your weekend car, and ctr daily… that’s my 2023 goal lol.

Even in stock form, when on throttle hard, the entire front end lifts off the ground and you can really feel it. Our car had 200lbs weight reduction and maybe 10-20 hp worth of breathing mods. Awesome video. I myself is a FR junkie never considered FF cars throughout my life but FL5 CTR really changed my perspective. Having 2 growing toddlers definitely contributed to bigger space of FF cars. Being an automobile designer my past life, I am still not fond of a long front overhang, short dash to axle, a pillar touchdown position of FF proportions but at least in FL5 I wouldn’t be embarrassed seen in one. Let’s see where it takes me but CTR would be the choice even with ADM
I love how easy the FL5 is to rotate mid-corner with some lift-off oversteer. It rotates like no other front wheel drive car I've ever driven. That makes it feel so much more nimble and playful...They really got it right on the overall design and tuning with this one.
Have you driven an Integra Type-R? It does the same. I still see old ITR's beating new CTR's (times) in auto-x. Imagine a 2600 pound car with good adjustable shocks cornering vs. the 3200lb CTR. Same with the 2800lb S2K. With shocks or a spring/shock combo the S2000 is the best handling car out there - it's really insane how well they corner, and the steering ratio and responsiveness is so amazingly quick in the S2K. I will take a 2600-2800lb car for the fun factor any day over a 3200lb car, and with some good aftermarket brake pads both ITR and S2K will stop on a dime. Weight still plays a big role in the nimble/playful/fun-factor dynamics, and don't forget those cars do not have electric steering giving a lot more road feel which = "fun to drive".
@@vtecharrys.6981 I was talking about more modern cars. I don't deny those older cars are fun as hell to drive, however you're comparing modified cars to stock cars. In stock form those cars don't really hold a candle to a new FL5 in actual performance. As for modifying...that can be done to all platforms...I'd argue that a modified FL5 will still beat a modified Integra. There's just too much difference in actual chassis development, as far as raw performance. You could I guess come up with some super specific test that an old Integra would beat an FL5 just cause it's lighter...maybe...but that would have be some very specific scenario, and I'd have a hard time coming up with one. The S2000 is a bit if a different beast all together. Its a small 2 seater rear wheel drive coupe. Again, unmodified still doesn't come anywhere close, but it has more potential in modified form.
@BigBear-- the modified type r still is probably better. Check out the type r tcr or type r spoon racing. But you could still make it possibly better you would need wide wheels loads of downforce about 400 500 hp with a supercharger or fast spooling turbo. Both cars are amazing.
@@DudeThedudesky ~400 is pretty easy even with a stock turbo. 500 will require a turbo upgrade. You can go real big on the K-series if you want to...though anything above 500-550, will start to require increasing amounts of block/head work. If you want to though 1000+ is very doable. I own my 2002 S2K since 2010, bought with about 80k kilometers on it, now it almost has 190000kms and i'am still in love with that car. I must say, i like it such a long time because it is NOT my daily. I drive it in my free time when the wether is good in spring and summer. I drove it on Spa Francorchamps, the Nürburgring, in the Alpes, German Highway and a lot on twisty roads in the Eifel hills. Those are the places where you have fun with car. Traffic jam and with the top up in the rain in busy cities and going to the supermarket is not the place wherefore Honda built the S2K. Nowadays cars with lowtorque turbo engines are faster and must more easier to drive fast, but that don't cares me, they all miss the driving feeling of a S2K. And why not compare a S2K with a new car?........Maybe comparing the S2K with the FL5 is not the right one, RWD compared to FWD but S2K comparing with GR86? For example, here in Holland the GR86 costs 65K Euros because of the very high CO2 taxes, for half the price you can buy a nice used S2K .

I actually wanted to buy a FL5 but only 9 is coming to my country, so I ordered a RS3 instead, we will see how it compares to my previous cars. I owned an AP2 S2000 and the handling was more forgiving. That came home when I was at an autocross and a guy in an AP1 lost the back end in the slalom section. The car came around so hard that he slid into a light pole that no one, including the organizers, though a car could reach.
For sure. It's just that some drivers can make use of it, others can't. Some also like the entertainment value of having a more active car. I spun my AP1 on a roundabout in my first few days of ownership but since then paid more attention and got a lot of fun out of its active handling.
S2000 is great but fl5 is better. I love my first civic type r. Gear box need a short shifter. Then it will shift better than s2000. I have no issue with heel toe. Power everywhere no need vtec to kick in at 5.2k rpm
Yeah, after filming I realized I forgot to address this! The FL5 transmission feels virtually the same as the FK8, except without the common 2-3 grind issue. Solid 8 out of 10. S2K transmission is 10/10.
@@DiamondHandsHodl The answer is still s2k. Porsche manuals in GT cars are good but not great like in an s2k. And the ratios are way too long to the point where some say Porsche neutered it, it only gave the GT3 the 'correct' gear ratios.
It's turbo, can't hit high rpms with such high boost pressure. That's the sacrifice of going boost. You can try to supplement with a loud exhaust. I think this is the first turbo Honda made out of the factory. We still don't know how reliable the engine is. Usually N/A are more reliable than boost.
I'm still on the fence about getting one. Ive never owned an S2K but I have owned (Integra, RSX, Prelude, Civics, even an FRS. But with these prices, the new GR is very tempting but everytime I go to place my deposit for one I cant help but think ill regret not getting an S2K. It would be my daily thou.

3:51 no greater truth has been spoken. The king of the manual gearbox is the S2000. Have driven Porsches, BMWs, Toyotas and Nissans. Nothing shifts better and more precise than an S2000.
FL5 looks so good inside and out, but man that engine sounds bad 😂 I like this talk with the driver after. Thats good they helped the heating issue a bit.. any help is good help
No question the S2000 by quite some margin. Just listen to how horrible that Civic a type R sounds. Add to that what stearlerships are charging for the Civic and I’d get an Elantra N and a S2000 for the same amount of money. Put the current gen CTR wheels and tires on the prior gen and it will be faster than the new one yet people are paying $55-$60k for the new one
Both totally different car, s2000 is made for fun while type r for time attack. Civic should be faster in allround comparison, s2000 handling should out performed civic.
s2000 is the drivers raw naturally aspirated car with rwd. The Fwd civic type R is quicker and faster with all the tech but lacks the sleekness/naturally aspirated raw sound Honda is known for. I hate the fake engine noise in the civic type R. I love civics but fake engine noise.... really...?
I hate that about it too. Type-R means emotion. I can't believe all the marketing BS when they serve up an engine that is competent but sounds crap. They've basically sacrificed their heritage of high-revving engines to become an engine maker that is competent without emotion. Just great.
I believe the supra would be a better choice for those backroads and it's also rearruled drive the suspension is not as harsh as the type bar where it only excels in a perfectly flat track unlike the supra that can also be good on the flat track does really good on back roads So if you really think that that was the fastest you can go on that back road with the type bar I can't wait to see your reaction when you drive the super GR in that same back road.
Curious if anyone has driven both the CTR FL5 and the 2023 Audi RS3. From a perspective of pure driving fun, how would you rate the 2 cars against each other?
@@Zygrene definitely interested in that comparison. I’m still going to wait out the market. But the FL5 is a solid number 2 To a GT car for a track toy.

S2000 is great but fl5 is better. I love my first civic type r. Gear box need a short shifter. Then it will shift better than s2000. I have no issue with heel toe. Power everywhere no need vtec to kick in at 5.2k rpm
You didn’t touch on the FL5 gearbox compared to the S2K. How does it stack up? Great review BTW!
Yeah, after filming I realized I forgot to address this! The FL5 transmission feels virtually the same as the FK8, except without the common 2-3 grind issue. Solid 8 out of 10. S2K transmission is 10/10.
@@Zygrene What about S2k transmission vs Porsche GT4? Or am I stupid for asking that question? LOL
@@DiamondHandsHodl The answer is still s2k. Porsche manuals in GT cars are good but not great like in an s2k. And the ratios are way too long to the point where some say Porsche neutered it, it only gave the GT3 the 'correct' gear ratios.
@@TheChannel1978 exactly!
I knew it was Michael's car. Glad to see you got to drive one.
S2000 is legendary
Great review videos. I’ve been enjoying them but one thing I would improve is more exterior driving shots please.
Subscribing just because of this video! Wanted to know how the new Type R felt compared to my mintish AP1.
Welcome to the channel!
Glad to be here, love your reviews focusing on what enthusiasts care about, the driving experience and vehicle dynamics!
@@Zygrene since you've driven both the FK8 LE and FL5. Which one do you prefer driving?
@@pawnphilavong1733 I need to test them back to back. FL5 felt 95% the same as the FK8 on that day.
My 2005 S2000 will be in my garage when I'm gone.
Finally, zygrene's FL5 video! Looks really good in black, too.
“It’s so good” just about sums it up.
Man, that fake engine sound is pretty bad...otherwise, such a sweet car!
If the engine sounds bad, what is the point? Unless the aftermarket can make it sound decent.
@@1HeatWalk Agreed, and the first factory turbo K-series was actually the K23A1 that came in the ‘07-‘12 RDX Turbo.
If you need to put 2 car seats in the back, the Civic seems like a logical choice . . . Front wheel drive is an inherently compromised layout.
Need to buy another S2 before they’re all 50 grand.
selling mines for 38k
Don't we all 😔
I'm still on the fence about getting one. Ive never owned an S2K but I have owned (Integra, RSX, Prelude, Civics, even an FRS. But with these prices, the new GR is very tempting but everytime I go to place my deposit for one I cant help but think ill regret not getting an S2K. It would be my daily thou.
Prices are down on S2K’s compared to the last few years. Now is definitely the time to buy one.
@@cameronnorman4188 its an awful daily, you can do it and on a sunny day its great but otherwise i wouldnt recommend it
wow civic looks huge 😮
Same length as the accord of the 90s. Think of it as an accord type R
Looking forward to this.
AP1 checking in....no contest s2k all day. If you need space get literally any other POS car and keep the s2k. Unique sports car developed with a unique engine in quite possibly the greatest era. The s2k is NOT a daily. It's your weekend car that you romp on for smiles.
I hate how high the bonnet sits from the side-view on the Civic. But thats modern safety standards I guess.
s2000 aNYDAY.
That FL5 Type R in black looks amazing
3:51 no greater truth has been spoken. The king of the manual gearbox is the S2000. Have driven Porsches, BMWs, Toyotas and Nissans. Nothing shifts better and more precise than an S2000.
2 different but awesome cars from same manufacturer

Black always looks the best
Just discovered your channel, great presentation on the new civic type r 👍
Welcome to the channel!
What do you think about the new type R swap for the s2000? How do you think that would change your opinion between the 2?
S2000 for me any day of the week 🤣
So we all agree the CTR is a great car. But at what price point(markup) is it no longer worth it in your opinion ?
In my opinion, you can make a solid argument for it at 10k markup.
i own both.. There is no comparison. S2000 is the better car.
Congratulations🎉massage me via teleg ☝️☝️to claim your prize🎁🎁🎁🎁
FL5 looks so good inside and out, but man that engine sounds bad 😂 I like this talk with the driver after. Thats good they helped the heating issue a bit.. any help is good help
With this video, I will buy an FL5R and also keep my 04 AP2 for a double whammy feeling 👌🏼
Why would someone mod a brand new Type R! They’re perfect from the factory.
Both totally different car, s2000 is made for fun while type r for time attack. Civic should be faster in allround comparison, s2000 handling should out performed civic.
I would take an S2000 AP2 all day! Preferably with a hard top. So much cooler car and still looks better than these new cars
s2000 is the drivers raw naturally aspirated car with rwd.
Just great.
nice review
I believe the supra would be a better choice for those backroads and it's also rearruled drive the suspension is not as harsh as the type bar where it only excels in a perfectly flat track unlike the supra that can also be good on the flat track does really good on back roads So if you really think that that was the fastest you can go on that back road with the type bar I can't wait to see your reaction when you drive the super GR in that same back road.
Have you scored these cars in the Spread Sheets? I really love comparing the scores with other cars to set as a baseline that I can relate to.
thanks!
Yup, ZPI has been updated! docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1QoqAWydVYdy-MARBWKOzGOPhF30SxPeiUwGa1tuV5BE/edit?usp=drivesdk
@@Zygrene thanks my man!
Love how these look
Love my AP2! My daily is a 08 Civic Si. Really feeling the itch to get the new type R but trying to resist lol.
Best combo!
I have the same combo! The Si needs work done though but slowly but surely
Dnt even need to waste my time watching the video. The clear choice for any real enthusiast is the S2K!
Curious if anyone has driven both the CTR FL5 and the 2023 Audi RS3. From a perspective of pure driving fun, how would you rate the 2 cars against each other?
What roads are you driving on?
The question is does it still overheat on track?
The engineers spend lots of time in suspension R&D and this guy just swaps the springs out immediately? Bouncy ride looked terrible.
I dont know before...S2000 its wild, hard to drive, have bad suspension build.CTR Always Kick In Yo.
Congratulations🎉massage me via teleg ☝️☝️to claim your prize🎁🎁🎁🎁
Just for the record the fk8 pulls away from the new R as far as acceleration goes. The gearing slowed it down.
Yup. I imagine the longer gearing might make it quicker at some tracks
How would you compare the FL5 to your very own brz?
Sounds like a future video idea 😏
@@Zygrene definitely interested in that comparison. I’m still going to wait out the market. But the FL5 is a solid number 2 To a GT car for a track toy.
Those 2 cars are completely different. Drive train and powerplant to make let are completely different. They are almost polar opposites.
Zygrene, if you were to buy either new car today, which one would you pick, if could get the type r at MSRP?
FL 5 is underwhelming for the price keep FK8
You compared the power steering of the two but sort of wrote off the EPS in the R as being a typical EPS. The S had EPS too...
How that S2000 stayed under 65k is a feat in itself. Cuz if I was the driver of that vehicle it’d be up in the 200k+ range 😂
Congratulations🎉massage me via teleg ☝️☝️to claim your prize🎁🎁🎁🎁
Mine only has 55k lol
Don’t understand it but okay 🤣
Yeah people who garage their s2000 mostly and treat it like a collector car are weird to me too. If weather allows im every morning out there
My two dream car!
Loved your review, but it ain't no comparison, I mean even an 08 jdm fd2 type R smokes the s2 around the Tsukuba track given we never got that model in North America just thought these aren't really comparable IMHO.
Vote to S200.
Honestly, I can't wait for the Intergea Type S. Not fond of the wing on the FL5.
HOW ABOUT THE VTEC????
Hey I’m in the Bay Area too. What road is this.
This guy needs to be working for a car magazine or something similar if he doesn’t already.
This channel is just my hobby and passion. I never want it to feel like a "job"
Best review..now, how is this new Type R compare to the Elantra N 6spd in the handling department?
Type R is what you want.
Now that's a great comparison video idea!
I would say this, Elantra N offers 90%-95% of type R at 75% price. If you can comfortably afford type R, then absolutely get the Type R. Else, go with Elantra N and enjoy!
@@retrograde11but 5% of the Rs looks. The Elantra is awfully ugly.
One is a pure sports car, the other is a grocery getter with performance.
Have you driven an FK8 or an FL5? They may not be “pure” sports cars, but they’re damn sporty.
