Quentin was doing great things until Jackie Brown - after that, his revenge stuff bores me. Baumbach was best with Mr. Jealousy and even Kicking and Screaming - Highball had moments too. Wes peaked with Rushmore - after that, he made his work a formula not unlike Tim Burton.
Check out the work of Joe Swanberg, Andrew Bujalski, Matthew Porterfield and other indie filmmakers. Google Factory 25 - now those guys do some amazing work.

I agree with the Tarantino revenge remark totally, however Anderson's movies, while they are for showing off, do have some subtle qualities. One is restrained affection, admiration and loyalty that his characters often display for each other along with a complex and sympathetic portrayal of the antagonist. His characters are rarely as one dimensional as they seem. This isn't emotionally expressed as much as demonstrated through a simple 'actions speak louder than words'. Much like a silent film would use to express a characters feelings or motivation.
Melancholia is another theme in his characters, until they've made things right and expressed the unexpressable to the unique and odd people which surround them. This usually comes in the form of gratitude and displays of appreciation. Whatever the situation, all characters are eventually united in their acceptance of their differences and forgiven their foibles without question. This is Anderson's vision which is original and another language for film.

Whit Stillman (Last Days of Disco, Barcelona). Well, Jeff is a great actor - and Squid did have some moments, but I felt it was too referential to take seriously (that embarrassingly bad Breathless/Annouk Aimee ending - and the fact that they shit all over the female characters (Linney is wasted). When Baumbach was a bit zany (Mr. Jealousy, Kicking and Screaming, Highball) he was a lot more fun but his "serious" stuff hasn't been acceptable.

Yeah, he has no doubt seen a great deal of movies but the Renoir remark has no basis, and being dim witted Wes - he can't explain his comment. Wes is all for show - his movies are empty - they exist only to show off.

Listen, I see nothing of any genuine heart and emotion in his films. They have no soul. Are they beautiful, sure - in their way, but overly pretty - too prepared if I can say so. Some would argue that his over analyzed prep. is a cool thing, I dunno. My major problem, and nobody can argue on this fact is that his style is a formula now. He bores me. Then again, his generation mostly bores me. PTA, Quentin, Baumbach - have only made passable movies in my view during the past 10 years.
