Hi, this is really helpful I am about to write a story on google docs.....many people have told me that I write really good stories so I wanted to try something new i thought to write soft copy of my stories, and this was really helpful.
Reasons of why you need to use gdocs: 1) As stated in the video, it automatically backs up. 2) Imagine this: You are writing your book, and an asteroid hits your pc/desktop. If you used your hard drive, your work is lost. If you used gdocs, your work is safe. Even if one of Google's data centers is destroyed, copies of your book are in other data centers, meaning no loss. 3) You can share through a link instead of making a copy of the file on a usb drive and giving it to the people your need to only for them to re-copy it. 4) If you get a virus, copying the file onto a usb drive only spreads it. Sharing through gdocs gives clean versions of the files to share.
1) Upload your text file to an online cloud service (Google Drive if you must) 2) Same as above 3) You can also just upload your book to a file sharing website or as before just take the sharing link of your text file from your cloud service 4) Same as above (You only really have 2 reasons, the ones below are elaborations... and taking a step farther all of your reasons are just extrapolations of "it's in the cloud so...convenience") You can use Google Docs if you want, but it definitely isn't a necessity at all. In fact, I believe you should prefer other, actual desktop software over Google's online service.
Thank you for making this video. I found this helpful, because I never new how to make an actual book manuscript. I usually write books for fun, and never finish them, because I knew I would never publish a book with such bad content. But I am getting better a writing (I hope). I also hope you can give me advice on how to make better content, that I think people will like.
Dude I had microsoft word before. I had over 40,000 words that I didn't back up and my hard drive failed. I lost everything. All of that hard work and valuable time, gone! I was gutted, but I guess that's what I get for not backing up. With this you don't have to though, and you can access your most recent version from the internet at any time. Now that I have to start all over, I will definitely be using this instead of word. This is much more convenient and secure. I've made a goal of 1,000 words a day. I don't want anything like this to happen again. Before I was halfway through my novel, if that wasn't obvious from the context.
Update: I have 20,000 words written, so I'm about halfway caught up to what I've lost. I just want to report that this is an amazing program and I absolutely love it. I even had the thought that maybe my hard drive failing was the best thing to ever happen to me! Recently I've been editing what I have so far and possibly my favorite tool is the editing mode, which lets me highlight in green things I want to change basically. This has honestly taken a lot of the anxiety out of the editing process for me, because I'm not worried about the changes that I make, because they aren't permanent. Before, editing drove me out of my mind! Now it's easier than writing. Who knew? I'm very happy with this program.
This is just one article of many. www.bbc.com/news/technology-33989384 It happens rarely, but you have too many hours in the manuscript not to back it up. How? Email it to a nonGoogle email account after each session (Yahoo, Microsoft, etc). Store it on your drive in “work offline” mode. Store it in PDF file and text it to yourself and put it on a flash drive, Print it on a printer.
Hi! Thanks for the video. I have one question. I tried to set my paper size to 8.5 x 11, but I did not have the option. The smallest size is 14 x 21.6. Is there a way to change that? Thanks

Hello. Thank you for taking the time in producing this video. I have watched many videos bloated with university-level language that I thought would never end. Your video was short and to the point. Awesome! New Subscriber For Sure !!!!
Hi there, thank you for your helpful tutorial. Clear, concise, and effective. I did have one question in regards to starting paragraph. Did you have a procedure for first line indentation?
I appreciate your video. Perfectly done! My question is, how do I properly type/create the 1st page of each chapter with the headings? As far as bold or font size change, spacing/tabbing down... I'm lost there.
You'll just need to center your chapter title at the top of the page and bold and change the font size as you see fit. You can find that in the menu bar at the top.
I usually do a page break and make sure my chapter is starting on a new page. Then I title it Chapter 1, Chapter 2, etc.. and begin writing my chapter. I hope I'm understanding your question correctly.
I am wondering, is there a way to format each page to be limited to whatever the standard number of words per page are, or the characteristic length, if you will, of of a normal book page? Or a way to break up the pages such that you can visually see what you written as it would be formatted in a book so you have a sense of how many pages you have per chapter and and the lay out of it, etc.
If I'm understanding your question correctly, that would be the formatting you do before publishing. You can find formatting details here 👉🏾 th-cam.com/video/iGDDZyfglGc/w-d-xo.html The formatting as shown in this video is for writing your manuscript.

Thank you for the short and sweet tutorial. Now that software overlords (lol) like Billy Gates want to charge yearly for usage of their programs, the demand for cheaper or free writing software is skyrocketing! Which is good for us writers on a budget.

Is it really supposed to be double spaced? I formatted a couple of chapters like you've shown, and it looks more like one of my college term papers, or my thesis than a novel manuscript. Is the double spacing just for ease of reading in a digital format?
Yes, it's for ease of reading. Keep in mind, you can keep it single spaced until it's time for you to submit to someone that's going to be reviewing it, if you'd prefer.
I have saved my Google doc as a PDF and uploaded it to Google Drive. I then uploaded the PDF to my iPhone and saved it in "Books." In Google Docs, click on your header where you want the page numbers to appear. In the menu, click Insert, Header & Page Number, Page Number and make the selection for how you want your page numbers to appear. When you add a new page, your page numbers will populate.

Hello @thelifeofawriter I would like to ask a couple of questions if you don’t mind. I am just a teenage boy who is barely starting a writing career and in need of help. Right at this moment I am writing my first novel and would like some feedback from you. I only have 1.6k word starting out for my first chapter but it grows and I’m hoping to get someone like you to guide me along since I don’t know of anyone who will. Please reply back if you’d be willing to help and if not I understand. Thank you.
@@thelifeofawriter Yes, I'm using the operating system Linux, and because it's not so popular, you have to look for many alternative software. The best is, the Linux distribution Ubuntu has a software center with over 70000 free Open-Source Applications! The hugest problem on Linux is the Gaming. But you can install it next to Windows, so when you boot up your computer, you will be given a menu where you can select each time Boot up Windows or Linux - If you are interested try it out! A few things to Linux: 1. There is the Kernel. But there are many different distributions, everyone has it ones software installer etc. I think there are around 60 distributions. The best choice for beginners is Ubuntu or Mint. There are also 20 different UIs, you can fully decide what you want your desktop look like. 2. Linux is completely Open-Source and free but 2 Linux distributions. 3. It's widely used on servers because of the low Ram usage, and on mobile devices known under the distribution name "Android". 4. The Linux Kernel itself is written in Assembly/C++, but the top of the distributions are all different. Python, Java,... You'll see every single programming language. Hi, this is really helpful I am about to write a story on google docs.....many people have told me that I write really good stories so I wanted to try something new i thought to write soft copy of my stories, and this was really helpful.
Best of luck!
Docs is awesome for writing, I used it to write my first book. :)
Vladimir why did you like it so much? I'm considering using it.
Reasons of why you need to use gdocs:
1) As stated in the video, it automatically backs up.
2) Imagine this: You are writing your book, and an asteroid hits your pc/desktop. If you used your hard drive, your work is lost. If you used gdocs, your work is safe. Even if one of Google's data centers is destroyed, copies of your book are in other data centers, meaning no loss.

4) If you get a virus, copying the file onto a usb drive only spreads it. Sharing through gdocs gives clean versions of the files to share.
Great points! Thanks for sharing!
If an asteroid hits my computer I would be more worried about the safety of my life than my book 😂
1) Upload your text file to an online cloud service (Google Drive if you must)
2) Same as above
3) You can also just upload your book to a file sharing website or as before just take the sharing link of your text file from your cloud service
4) Same as above
(You only really have 2 reasons, the ones below are elaborations... and taking a step farther all of your reasons are just extrapolations of "it's in the cloud so...convenience")
You can use Google Docs if you want, but it definitely isn't a necessity at all. In fact, I believe you should prefer other, actual desktop software over Google's online service.

Format / Paragragh Styles / Normal Text (OR Options) / Update Normal Text to Match (OR Save As (OR Use) My Default Text..,
The Font at some other point of the document will ALWAYS switch to ARIAL 11.
If anyone has any hacks I'd appreciate it.
I've never experienced that. Thanks for sharing. Maybe someone else can chime in.
This was SOOOOOOO helpful!
Thanks so much!
where do i put the title of a chapter? someone help me🧡
You can put it at the top of the page, just make sure it's centered.
thelifeofawriter ok thank you so much!!!
No problem.
I heard that it's not necessary to indent when it comes to writing a manuscript. Is that true?
I have my book written, however, it also has already been edited, how do I get the words in book form now?
You need to have it formatted for Kindle or whatever version you're publishing to.
That makes sense but does it mean I can write a first draft book for real?
Great information!
Thanks Ashley!
How to make booklets on docs?
I've never made booklets, but I would assume it to be the same process.
“I’m about to use it today .”
Thank you!
Got a writing ad in the beginning of this video
Hello @thelifeofawriter I would like to ask a couple of questions if you don’t mind. I am just a teenage boy who is barely starting a writing career and in need of help. Right at this moment I am writing my first novel and would like some feedback from you. I only have 1.6k word starting out for my first chapter but it grows and I’m hoping to get someone like you to guide me along since I don’t know of anyone who will. Please reply back if you’d be willing to help and if not I understand. Thank you.
Good free alternative? Use Libre Office!
Cool, I'll check it out thanks!
If you are interested - try it out!
@@prometheus0534 You're very knowledgeable! Definitely an option for any clients I have in the future on that operating system. Thanks!
