Really interesting interview! I wasn't aware of the CERN thing - very cool, hopefully someone at CERN may see this at some point and report back on the PDVS2mini!

Back in the day (1980s) the time electronics gear was the best (eg microcal 1030) for most things we needed to calibrate in the field (instrumentation). I never made it to a rig but was in Aberdeen a few times. Thanks for the chat and all the wise words, putting a PDVS2 mini on my xmas list right now..... :-)

I remember the 1044 being a favourite in our workshop back in the day. There was also another brand but can't remember the name, had lovely silver flip switches, black cases.

We used to have an air extraction fan in our test lab and one evening someone accidentally switched it off and all the test results had to be redone as the heat had built up and caused everything on test to go into over temperature error mode

I enjoyed this video a lot, very good idea. I like Ian's videos / channel a lot too. I would have liked Ian's sound level quite a bit higher, the difference between you two was unpleasant to my sensitive soul.

Very nice podcast.. with our young daughter, we've done a ccw tour around Scotland in 2007, watching the latest 'Harry Potter' movie in Aberdeen... and we studied the different Scottish dialects.. very pleasant ones, with a lot of rrrrolling "R", and especially the people were very kind, everywhere. 😍
I really like Ians interesting repair videos on T&M equipment, because these are straightforward, done in one sequence and mostly successful.
I really would appreciate if Dave could take that as a beacon to shoot again some more repair videos. 🤔
And yes, you can only draw a lot of stability out of an HP3458A and precision analog gear, if you keep room temperature stable to < 0.5°C. That's a big problem.
I have a passive temperature stabilization in my basement lab, +/- 0.2°C over days and weeks, but as soon the instruments are on, temperature will rise +1°C, and when the huge 100W/100kg operator moves in front of the bench, measurements have to be done very quickly.
Therefore, automated data acquisition is highly preferred.

@DrFrank-xj9bc Yes, when I calibrate a batch of 50 PDVS2mini's I have to get "all my ducks in a row" beforehand so that it's quick and the workshop stays stable. I even put a note on the outside of the door "do-not-distrurb"....🙂
Hacking my Aircon was a game changer, and I have live graph recording the temperature trending.

I love Dave's enthusiasm and supportiveness, good humor and constuctive comments, but dang, I sure wish he would do a little less walking all over the interviewee with excited exclamations when they're speaking. Maybe do something with the audio so that the interviewee audio takes precedence...lower Dave's audio level in general and maybe use something like side-chain audio ducking so that the interview voice auto suppresses Dave's voice? (There's probably a bit of challenge dealing with delay on international calls -- so I do want to acknowledge that this show is already a good effort, so thumbs up on the show in general!)

Listen to the audio podcast, it's edited like what you describe. And this isn't an "interview", it's just two TH-camrs hanging out.

@@EEVblog2 OK fair enough -- I shouldn't be looking a gift horse in the mouth and all that :-). I favor the video because of the additional enjoyment of seeing you two guys as well as hearing the conversation. For a non-interview, you sure elicited a lot of interesting info from Ian, so 👍.
