Now, back again, a year later. I have watched and listened to this Concerto a Due Cori many times, and it is always so fresh and joyful. Handel must have known how original he was, how melodic, and how the audience loved him. Here we are almost 300 years later, still loving his music. How lucky we are now, in 2023, to be able to listen to his music whenever and wherever we are.
My favourite is the second movement and I do so like the transitional minor chords which some orchestras seem to muddle over, while they were nicely audible here!
This is one of the most joyful pieces of music of the baroque, or any period since people have been making music together. Rachel Podger conducts with all the happiness and enthusiasm that the music deserves. Handel's Concerti Grosso are all fabulous, especially Opus 3 with 6 concerti, and Opus 6 with 12. I believe the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra has recorded them all, also Christopher Hogwood and The Academy of Ancient Music. This concerto in particular just thrills me. That final movement, when the oboes seem to be either competing or really making love with each other, culminating in the one minute duet from 15:12 to 15:44. Seating the Age of Enlightenment to the left and Freiburg to the right, in mirror image, was a brilliant stroke. And thanks to TH-cam that moment is preserved forever! And more thanks to the director or editor who throughout the piece has the camera focused on the soloist you want to see.
Just a correction: this is not a Concerto Grosso. It's one of 3 Concerti a due cori that Handel composed. The meaning is concerto for 2 choirs, with each "choir" consisting of 2 oboes, 2 bassoons and 2 horns and a string section. That's why they are seated like that, and seem to compete in the score.
