    And some people wonder why there are so many homeless people. IT'S BECAUSE NO ONE CAN AFFORD RENT ANY MORE!!! The rule of thumb used to be rent equaling one weeks pay. Now it's more like three weeks pay, which sure as hell doesn't leave much for every thing else 🤬

    • @alexbennet4195
      @alexbennet4195 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That’s not the reason why there are so many homeless people at all…? You’re entitled to council housing if you’re really desperate, but the vast majority of homеless people are severely mеntаlly іll and/or struggling with аddісtion

    • @silverghostcat1924
      @silverghostcat1924 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@alexbennet4195 those reasons also play into the problem. But the main issue is affordable housing needs to be a thing especially here in the States. When a one bedroom apartment is $1200 a month (not including utilities), people have to either make a damn good living at one job or have two or more just to make ends meet. That leaves little time to enjoy the place you have to work so hard to be able to afford. It's insanity 🫨

      This all started in the 1980's with Margaret Thatcher bringing in the right to buy council houses which now are owned by private land lords and developers. And also there haven't been any significant social housing projects since then to replace the housing that was sold off due to right to buy

    I had a relationship breakdown at the end of last year and I couldn't afford to stay in the house we were in. I'm now in a one bedroom bungalow with my mum, sleeping on a futon in her living room. (I understand the struggle to disconnect from me playing games/ writing etc. to then shut off and sleep). I was a 24/7 carer for the last 8 years, I've no job or experience and I'm having to see a counsellor for some mental health issues. The housing situation is a nightmare, I can't afford private and I'm not "eligible" for most of the places on the council. This country is in a serious crisis. Good luck in your new place, I'm really happy for you 💜🫂

      This is basically the exact same situation I've found myself in the last few years. Thankfully I have a reasonably priced private rent to go back to but my landlord is considering selling so my situation is probably going to get much worse soon. I've put my life on hold to help my family whilst also dealing with physical & psychological health problems without much help or support & I honestly don't know how to get some semblance of a life back for myself. Things just feel so uncertain & scary right now.

      It's a pity that you're not able to just move inside Europe anymore. Being a person who really hates to see people suffering, I would just offer you a place to stay in my house in exchange for a bit of housework and daughter-homework-duty in a German household where everyone also speaks English fluently, even my 10 year old daughter! I certainly hope you'll find a job and a place of your own very soon or maybe some who would like to give you a similar opportunity which would leave you enough time to figure out what you want to do with your future life.

      I understand having to sell a house, but it should be discussed with the renters so that they can prepare to move out by gathering a bunch of money. Moving is almost never cheap, unless you manage to either sell your furniture and build it back up again slowly, or if you undo all furniture and carry it on your own. A friend of mine did so by bike, but you can't carry a 2-people bed on your own on a bike, unless you have a lot of strength or an e-bike and a pick up of sorts.

  • @everogersdownunder1242

    That's almost $5,500.00 in Australia for your rent and bills - that's insanity but also less than or around the same for an apartment in a major city in Australia e.g. Melbourne.
    Some rent alone in Melbourne for a 2 bed apartments is about $5k a month *not* including bills on top. Hence we have a *massive* housing crisis here too.
    It's ridiculous!!

    • @clooneytune_
      @clooneytune_ 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I don't know, I live in a semi-detached unit that's something like 150 years old, physically falling apart, mould in all the walls, leaks in almost every room... Etc, etc, and we still pay about that for rent and bills every month... And we're lucky enough to have a lovely landlord who hasn't been raising the rent whenever the property manager prompts him to. From what I can gather this is a pretty standard amount to pay for rent and bills in Melbourne unless you're living so far out that you've lost all benefits of living in a capital city anyway

    • @everogersdownunder1242
      @everogersdownunder1242 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @clooneytune_ I was talking city Central Melbourne - when we say "Melbourne" over here, we urban and suburbs of Melbourne. That's what rent is for a 2 bed apartment in an outer suburb of Melbourne will cost you almost and that's why it's outrageous

    • @clooneytune_
      @clooneytune_ 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@everogersdownunder1242 you've edited your comment, so I can't remember the exact context my answer was made in originally, but yes, I was talking about paying that for rent and bills in inner city Melbourne. Like, 2 stops outside of the free tram zone, in a falling down house. $5500/month is pretty much on average, even low, for both rent and normal bills anywhere in Melbourne that actually has usable infrastructure.
      Your edited comment seems to now have a similar sentiment, so I'm not entirely sure where the misunderstanding was originally, sorry.

    I was section 21'd out of London at the end of summer last year and it took me months to get past the feeling like I had failed by not being able to afford to live there - but as a renter it just didnt feel safe to live there anymore, there's no protections to stop that from happening again, and I was struggling to find anyone who wanted to house share with someone in their late 30s. I tried looking at Brighton too as basically all of my friends live there, but that's even worse for house shares, it's too popular of a city so the rental market is extremely competitive, and most of the rooms are for students only.

    I live 1h via train from London. I live in shared house - just with 2 guys! And we pay in total £1700 + bills. So I pay no more than £634. That gives me more money to spend on travelling, eating out, buying some stuff from Japan etc. So this is a wise decision Roly, nothing to worry about, plus you are close to the sea now! I live in what is considered a higher end suburb and i'm so sick 'oh but you live in x,' yeah, so, i can't even get a propper meal after 9pm and it's floods regularly. Things here in Australia are also crazy. Rent keeps going up, utilities raised by 40% recently! Groceries are also WAY expensive. It's becoming a struggle for families to get by. It's so crazy.
    People can't afford to buy their own homes so there is also a rental crisis, so many people looking to move in somewhere but not enough homes to go around. When we were looking for somewhere to go there would be 50 other families there aswell, we'd all be lined up outside waiting for our turn to go in and have a look. I was stressed for a while, we were staying with family and not having a home base for our daughter. This is in humble Adelaide, it must be outrageous in Sydney or Brisbane. 😮
    I hope you are settling in well to your new home, it's always exciting to set up a new living space. 😄

Then I realized that most of my friends and family had all moved away for the same reason over the years. I was really the only one left in town. I also realized I was not getting any value for the money I was spending. I had lived there my whole life but everything I recognized had long since been closed, torn down and replaced with new things I had no interest in. I barely was able to move apartments to "an affordable unit". I'm now paying almost $2000 a month (over one paycheck). Like you said, I can't move due to transportation and my job. It's to the point here that people are looking at dating as a transactional situation to be able to afford to live. It's so dystopian

    As a child it was my dream to live in London like the tv shows and movies my brother moved there and in the space of 4 years he moved to 3 different places cause he can’t afford it. He is lucky he has a high paying job but he still is struggling his apartment is a tiny one bedroom apartment with no balcony in a busy part of London no parking space or any benefits and for the same price where I live I have a 3 bedroom house . It must be awful for those who have a minimum wage job/single income/have children/lost or no job. It’s pure greed and then government wonder why there is so many homeless people. I’m glad you made this decision to leave you shouldn’t have to slave away to afford a place to live & Brighton is a wonderful place amazing pier,restaurants and lots of safe places & clubs I think you will thrive in your new place. Congratulations on your move and this exciting new chapter! I hope you're getting loads of joy and fun in creating your new nest. I didn't really live on my own til I turned 30, and now I can't imagine having to share my space with anyone else! :D The way you describe how London has changed reminds me very much of how I felt about Dublin at the turn of the millenium. I had grown up there, and it was a fabulous place to be a teenager. But the changes of the bloody Celtic Tiger made me feel very alienated, and I left in 1999, never looked back. I hope you feel welcomed and accepted in your new home town. xoxox

      And Dublin rents are crazy expensive now. A friend who lived in a flat in Temple Bar has moved to Fairview because the rent had increased so much.

    I understand a lot of the comments and that some people got the wrong idea, because the way the other video was done and things that were said really made it seem like a relationship breakup rather than two friends just not living together anymore

    Oh Roly! i hear u about your bedroom sooo much. I cant wait for you to have a lovely bedroom! Make it dark and warm and fluffy. Barely any electricity... i hope your sleep improves. My room is my escape room so i do everything in here and i suffer with everything you said. If you still can't sleep try reading books you liked as a kid, it might seem silly but its so relaxing. Good luck. 👍

    This is such a “right of passage,” and so great! But, that doesn’t mean it’s easy at all. It’s a grief process, 100%. The articulation and details you talk about in this video tells us why it’s also a “break-up with London.” You lived “that” life at the right time as the right “you,” and you’re different now. It’s a hard transition, and you def showed the effort you put into really trying to make it work. You can strongly check “London” off your list. It’s not the only thing that changed. Congratulations!!

    Hey Roly, welcome to Brighton! As a fellow queer chap I can't imagine living anywhere else in the UK tbh and it's often called London-by-the-sea anyway.
    Hope you're enjoying it so far - I live on my own too which can be daunting at first but you're probably come to love it in the long term, besides you can always have friends over :)

    I know how you feel about places changing over time. My home town (Hamilton Scotland, fairly close to Glasgow for reference) has changed so much from what I remember to what it's like now 8 years later. The town centre is all boarded up and empty, it feels like a ghost town. It's a massive shame because even the shopping centre is empty and my bf's family had to work so hard to move there just to stay close to family. It's always heartbreaking to see things change but when the change is so drastically different, it's quite hard to bear. Good luck with this new chapter in all three of your guy's lives and may great things come from this decision, your bank account will definitely be thanking you for this.

    I moved out on my own, but only lasted 6 months until they upped the bills and rent ); I had to move back to my parents. I know I'm lucky to have family to move back to, so I'm thankful for that, and it works better for all of us with the cost of living being garbage. I'd like to get out of my town, but I don't see that happening for a while ^^'

      For sure. I’m in Australia and always wanted to live in Sydney. It took until my 30s to finally get there. I moved in early 2021. I was there less than 2 months when Sydney went into complete lockdown from Covid for many many months. All I could do was work and stay home. I was also stuck without most of my belongings because I moved with just a couple of boxes that would fit in my car and was going to get the rest later. Lockdown stopped be being able to get the rest of my things from another state. Then not long after the lockdown ended I got an injury that left me unable to even walk without assistance for a full year. I couldn’t work, couldn’t really do anything (couldn’t walk) and ended up in a lot of debt just paying bills without an income. I didn’t get to experience the city, I didn’t get to make any friends, etc etc etc and then I ended up having no to move back where I came from and live in a trailer park. I don’t feel like I failed, circumstances failed me

    Wishing you all the best with the move and settling in to Brighton. Like a lot of New Zealanders, I did my two year stint in London in the early 90s. I loved going to Camden to the markets and the shops there and Soho was so much fun. It always makes you a bit sad to think that places you loved so much change. It's so weird to think that it will be easier for you to see your sister in London from Brighton but, you're so right about the underground.
    My daughter is 26 and after a trip to Europe over Christmas with our family (there are only three of us - her, her brother and me) she and her girlfriend decided to stay in the UK. Her generation of young Kiwis are heading further north to Scotland because London rents are so prohibitive. They've actually just moved to the Isle of Skye to work in a hotel there. They can live in, get two meals provided every day and are getting an experience most kids won't get. They are so happy. And the pay's ok
    Brexit really screwed over your entire generation and those younger than you. I'm sure Brighton will be an awesome move and that you can think about enjoying life and not having to worry constantly about bills. Having a separate filming space will be so good for you mentally and physically. xxx

    i 100% understand the work being in your room and not knowing how to shut off. With Covid we started working from home. i worked at my desk where i used to come home and use to entertain myself. i got depressed because i would work, literally walk 5ft to the kitchen to make dinner and then i was supposed to somehow relax. Eventually, i was able to move my work space to another room in our house and it helps SO MUUCH!! i'm so excited for you. you are going to love having a separate space. good luck with your move!!!

    There are cities in the States that are like London.
    One of those is San Francisco.
    I'd love to move back to the City, it is cost-prohibited.
    Down where I was born, I cannot afford a Bedsit/studio on my own.
    Good Luck to you all, you might be following different paths.
