Great video and a beautiful book! Just to point something out here, George Orwell was a staunch socialist all the way throughout his life. His critique was with fascism and stalinism, not communism. His issue was with the idea of a vanguard leading the proletariat. Orwell was a proponent of democratic socialism/communism, otherwise known as libertarian socialism. He was also criticizing the west. Minitru is literally taken from his time at the BBC.
Oh man, that Folio cover is frightening!! Cool edition though! I reread 1984 and several dystopians in the last 2 years. I also read Fahrenheit 451 for the 1st time, have you read that one? I thought it was so good. Each of them speak to a little different view of a dystopian world. I’ve definitely seen an increase in cultural encouragement for children to find cultural/political “faults” in their parents and expose them to the world, growing closer to 1984. I’ve also seen tons of things memory holed in our society 😬 and of course the declining attention spans helps that along. I was reminded of Ingsoc’s mottoes just a few days ago when I saw Newsom’s ad campaign where he advertises for abortion and quotes the words of Jesus out of context to love your neighbor as yourself - it was like a propo our of the Ministry of Love, “murder is love” being the core message.
I have not read Fahrenheit YET. I know I need to, but it was never required reading and I haven’t gotten around to it. I recall seeing Newsom’s ad. Unconscionable. The idea of “doublethink” in the book is so pertinent. That we will believe lies, knowing they’re lies, so we don’t have to experience the discomfort of confronting that lie.
Almost to 100, keep going and stay consistent , love watching your videos .
