My brother and I served aboard the USS YORKTOWN IN THE 60's. My brother was a Boatswain Mate 3rd Div. I was a Aviation Boatswain Mate In V2 Div. Catapaults and Arresting Gears.
My dad served aboard the Yorktown before being transferred to the USS Halsey Powell destroyer (DD686). After moving to the Charleston area in '87, I spent every Memorial Day and Veterans Day on the Yorktown.
It is an awesome experience visiting the Yorktown. I't is wonderful that there is such a strong and active organization preserving and keeping its legacy going. Thanks for your view and comment.
Good video, thank you!!
America has 6 CVs, 8 BBs, a heavy cruiser, and dozens of small boys and subs still afloat as well as Supply Ships and PT boats on display from WW2. The combined British, French, Australian, Dutch, Japanese, Italian, and Russian fleets have a Cruiser, 5 Uboats, and less than 10 MBTs that exist.
You get your facts straight IT IS THE CONGRESSIONAL MEDAL OF HONOR!!!!
looks great
Well presented, thank you.
I've visited her twice.
It is the Congressional Medal of Honor
It is only the Medal of Honor. Congress authorized it during the War Between the States and this is why so many people think it's a CMH instead of the correct MOH.
Nothing against the USS Yorktown but it was a dam shame the USS Enterprise was sold for scrape metal
Agree. Visiting the Yorktown really made me appreciate how much work it takes to keep a ship that big in safe condition for visitors. The painting alone is never ending!
I bet there is spooks all over that ship at night
Sucks the SUBMARINE got removed
I saw the sub during a previous visit about a decade ago. Pretty cool but very cramped! The guide told me it was starting to seriously leak and became unsafe. I'm not sure if it's being scrapped or will eventually return.
@@GlobeDecker it's getting scrapped, wasn't maintained, and won't survive now in drydock, can't fault the museum, cause everything is donations, I fault the navy not saving it's only surviving guppy conversion. Hopefully parts will go to other boats
@@s.porter8646 Oh, that's too bad. It was a really fascinating contrast to the massive scale of the Yorktown. Totally understand though how the museum couldn't foot that bill.
@@GlobeDecker I'm a Submarine veteran, and this hits hard on me, there was technology that was 30 years a head of it's time, but volunteers can only do so much.
@@s.porter8646 Truly unfortunate that they couldn't find a way to display it out of the water so it could continue being seen and preserved, like the USS Cavalla in Galveston.
goGDam!! These is no such thing as the CONGRESSIONAL Medal of Honor. Get your facts right. It is the MEDAL of HONOR --PERIOD.
Apologies on my mistake.
By the way, the museum on board dedicated to recipients of the Medal of Honor just underwent a $3 million renovation and opens in less than a week. Our Navy veteran tour guide spoke very highly of the new space and exhibit.
@@GlobeDecker you show great profesionalism answering such a rudely worded comment. Ill subscribe to your channel and hit like to this video.
@@indyminded5473 Thank you for the kind words.
Was fortunate enough to accompany my grandson’s Boy Scout troop to Patriot’s Point a few years ago. We spent two nights onboard the Yorktown, sleeping in a berthing compartment, showering in the head and eating on the mess deck. What a blast for this old Jarhead who spent a lot of time onboard Navy vessels. Took a few of the scouts on a couple of late night tours of the ship, showing how everything connects, exploring a few areas that might be outside of the normal tour and trying to tell them about life underway. We had an amazing time.
@@ekimp252 That sounds incredibly fun! We certainly never did anything that that when I was in the Scouts!
