    I'm excited for them! I play 2ply heads most of the time but liked the UV1 coating alot ... what i really need is a snare head with the UV coating and a reversed dot in the middle, hope the future will bring stuff like that :)

    I use the UV series heads (UV1’s on my toms and UV EQ4/EMAD’s on my kick). I love those heads, durability and tone are unparalleled from anything I have ever used. I am primarily a jazz player and prefer a more higher bop tuning but do play in other situations where a lower tuning is needed (hence the EMAD on the kick). I think a two ply head version is interesting and will provide me with options should I need heads this heavy. What is more important for me is the expanded use of the UV process. Along with the UV Hydrolics, Evens is clearly looking at where they might use this revolutionary technology. I would like to see Evans experiment with a UV1 Dry head similar to the Genera Dry model (the head I prefer to use on my snares). Great product demo, the Pearls sound great as always. Keep it up and coming!

    When the UV1s first came out I tried a set of them because of the putative durability of the coating. I play with brushes a lot, and was annoyed at how quickly the coating became smooth on my Ambassadors or G1s. The UV coating is very durable, but after using them for a while I came to dislike the sound of those heads compared to Ambassadors or G1s. It will be interesting to see what the UV2 will be like as it seems to be a different product altogether. Currently to fatten up my sound a little I'm using a coated G12 on the tom, and a G2 on the floor tom (what you said about the G2 being surprisingly sensitive for a 2-ply head tracks with my experience as well. I generally prefer single plies but find that a two ply increase the size of the sweet spot on the floor tom, and controls for the over-ring. On snare drums I use almost exclusively the Aquarian Modern Vintage heads. These are a bit darker than the G1s, but whatever the coating is that Aquarian uses, it wear like iron. Nice introduction to the new line, I enjoy everything you guys do.

    It's not really the sound I'm looking for, but I think the durability could be a lifesaver for touring drummers. I think sound engineers will also love these heads, and they are a huge (forgotten) factor in how you sound.

  • @RossittoS
    @RossittoS 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm using the UV1 on the snare and I have noticed that longer break-in period that you mentioned. In the first hours (about 10 to 15 hours) the head was sounding a little bit weird, with less warm tone and a lot of harmonics. But now it sounds great, with a good balance between body, tone and harmonics!! The UV coating lasted longer than a Remo coating, but less than an Aquarian coating - in my perception.
    Like always, great video with great content!! Thank you. Greetings from Brazil! o/ 🇧🇷

      Thanks! We've said this before- we're happy to work with other drumhead manufacturers. We worked with Steele of Kentville Drums on demonstrating his kangaroo hide drumheads when he got in touch with us. Haven't heard anything from any other drumhead manufacturer though the door remains open.
      Evans has supplied some heads for videos and we're grateful for that support. We already invest considerable amounts of time in creating these videos and ensuring that the statements made are backed up by real-world experience, both in performance (Cody's focus) and production (Ben's focus from his time working for Evans Drumheads). It's this firsthand knowledge that allows us to make the statements that we do rather than regurgitating something seen in another video or read elsewhere online.
      We're definitely open to fruitful comparison opportunities and experimenting with a variety of brands. -Ben

    For a heavy hitter durability is very important. Regarding durability according to your test results the top head of UV2 is great and even the best you have ever tested: no marks at all on the head: that is great!.. So if you want a UV2-G2 2 ply combination: for durability ... G2 on the bottom of the 2 ply.

    • @henk-janwormgoor8497
      @henk-janwormgoor8497 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am a soft hitter so ..this heavy one is not a head for me! May be a great type of head for Marching Snares: with the enormous marching sticks and heavy beating this may give a nice sound. My experience with Pinstripes coated on a snare:for me it feels like there is no move in the head (like concrete): a to hard suface to do things with dynamics, rudiments and feel. A tricky head to get injuries. Perhaps this UV2 does it better that the coated pinstripes but ...it should be weather resistant with heavy beating in rain, hot weather and freezing colds. Remo's are perfect all weather heads for outside playing in all heavy conditions.

    I'm looking forward to these heads coming out. I've been using G2s for a really long time on most of my kits, and I've always run into some durability issues on the floor toms with the loose tuning I use on them coupled with my barrel tipped sticks. Hopefully when the final product comes out the issues to mentioned will be addressed, and I'll have a new drumhead to use on my kits :)

    I definitely like the tones, but I managed to snap the top ply on my head in about 3-4 hours of play time. Sending mine back now for them to study why and how it happened. I’m definitely in the same boat as that other guy, a center dot, perhaps under the top ply, might do some good. Or maybe thickening up one of the plies a little bit?

    Great demo & review, Ben. And that's a beautiful Pearl kit!
    However, I think it would have been way better to demo these Double-Ply UV2 heads on a kit using standard Triple-Flange Steel Hoops instead of the Pearl's Diecast Hoops.
    Regarding the original UV1 heads, I loved the durability of the Coating and the heads overall, and the UV1 coating was excellent for using brushes on the snare as well.
    I tried a full set of the UV1's on my practice kit, and while they held up remarkably well for the 6+ months that I used them, I found that I missed and preferred the tonal qualities of the Remo Coated Ambassadors, and that includes for recording as well.
    When I switched back to the Remo AC's, I also didn't realize how different the stick rebound & feel was with the UV1's. It wasn't bad per se, just different, and I preferred the stick/rebound feel of the Remo's right away.
    Of course, all of this is subjective, and everyone will have different preferences. I mostly play jazz and play with a lot of dynamics from very soft pianissimo to all-out wailing on swing solos, and the Remo AC's tended to sing & have a more consistent tone at all dynamics. Just my .02

    • @SoundsLikeADrum
      @SoundsLikeADrum  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much! One of the things I love about this kit and setup with these hoops is that I've tested (to great length) every single model of Evans tom heads on them and most Remo and Aquarian heads as well. It's the baseline that I tend to compare most drumheads with.
      Since we've used it for demonstrating a variety of heads/tuning methods on this channel, it seemed about right to stay consistent (especially since this is the kit I was personally using to test these particular heads for D'Addario). As such, I've got to disagree with the notion that a test with triple-flange hoops would have been "way better. It would have been different, and that's fine. That may be something to try when the final production models come out. Thanks for watching! -Ben

      +Sounds Like A Drum
      Thanks for the reply. I get where you are coming from with wanting to keep things consistent from test to test. I would do the same if it was *just for my personal comparison* using my daily driver kit.
      HOWEVER, you are trying to reach a broad audience of drummers, and the reality is that the majority of the drumming community will be using a kit with standard Triple-Flange Hoops. I'd guesstimate that to be roughly 80% of the drum kits sold and used in the past, present, and foreseeable future.
      For example, out of my current 8 drum kits, only one (a vintage Gretsch) has Die-Cast Hoops, and one other kit has maple/wood hoops. So again, the majority are triple-flange (albeit of varying thickness and weight).
      I'm just sayin' that for *most* of your viewers, it probably would have been a better reference point to use standard hoops since the die-cast hoops will change the sound properties considerably, and again, probably no more than 20% of your viewers will be using die-cast.
      It's still a fantastic and valid demo, and you did an excellent job in explaining the sonic & physical properties of these heads in comparison to others.
      But IMO, I see this video as being more advantageous to Evans' product development team since these heads are not the final versions.
      I think that it's great to give the opportunity for your viewers to be able to chime in and give their thoughts to help steer Evans in the right direction with the development of these new heads. But it's also somewhat of a waste because 99.5% of your viewers will NEVER be able to buy or use these *exact* (prototype) heads.
      In addition, I would bet that Evans will want to target the broadest market of drummers with these, and again, I feel that the majority would be on triple-flange hoop kits of course. Perhaps most of the other Beta Testers ARE using triple-flange hoops, so I think this is still a very useful demonstration and analysis.
      I'd really look forward to watching and hearing your Demo of these when the final production models are released. But of course I'd prefer it to be on a good, currently available, well-known/popular kit that more of your audience would be familiar with and relate to, and one that is outfitted with standard triple-flange hoops. :-P
      I in no way mean to be a jerk with my comments. I just want your already excellent TH-cam drum channel to become even better and for you guys to reach an even wider audience. ;)

    I've been a big fan of Evans heads and have used coated G2s over Reso 7s for a quick decay, but I want to try other heads like the clear G2s, clear or coated G12s and clear EC2s at some point. I've liked the G1 and HD Dry snare heads and I practically swear by the 300 snare side, and I may try a UV1 next for a snare head because I play a lot of jazz and I've heard they're great for brushes.
    But my concern with the UV heads is the fact that the coating doesn't go all the way to the edge, and as a result, the coated portion could be off center and bring a challenge for tuning. I know it's kind of a look thing, and I definitely agree that it does make it look cool, but I would rather the coating go all the way around the head as other Evans heads do so that this issue is limited. I'm really obsessed with symmetry (I go crazy with making sure my sticks are straight before I buy them) and I personally believe that a slight off-center placement could present an issue for me. I've played other people's kits and concert toms at my college with the Remo Controlled Sound black dot heads and have occasionally found heads to not have the dot centered which makes it difficult to tune.
    Then again, Evans does have the Level 360 tech to assist with tuning (which is why I like it so much) but until Evans decides to put the coating all the way around the edge, I think that for my playing I will stick with traditional coated Evans heads. Do you guys at Sounds Like A Drum know if the coating not going all the way around does anything to affect the sound of the head/present any tuning challenges aside from possible off center placement?
    Keep up the awesome work, love the videos!!

      Thanks! The "best" of anything in the world of drum sounds is completely subjective and dependent on the circumstances. You really can't go wrong with a clear single-ply 10mil drumhead for a reso but there are lots of other options out there that may be better fitting for you depending on a number of factors. This is the kind of conversation we'll be diving deep into on the discussion board for Patreon supporters.

      If you guys end of doing this test, please include the Fat-Cat dual/adjustable tension snare wires. They allow you to have two different snare wire tensions on the head using your single strainer tension adjustment...
      Somewhat like a philharmonic snare that has a multi-strainer throw-off. It allows for better sensitivity across the head and for ghost notes, etc.

      Also one thing I wanted to say, that you guys could possibly pass on. One issue I have with the UV series is that the heads almost sound a bit boxy. I love the consistency of the coating, but the tone proves to he less organic than Remo heads. It's a shame, considering the quality of the coating. And I would love to see Evans release the 12 mil Calftones that were being tested. I'd love to see that, and I was disappointed to see only the 7 mil released for toms and snares. Are the working on anything else in that line, such as experimenting with a different process?

    Interesting things happening at Evans, Calftone, UV1, now this... Well, it might have its place but for me it sounds too dead, too much like a cardboard-box. G2 and Emperor coateds still have a nice tone to them, but those?... not so much imho. But then, I'm not a hard hitter, playing in a metalband, so, those are probably not made for me anyway.

      For what it's worth, I went back and read the letter that came with the heads I received and there wasn't a single mention of confidentiality whatsoever. That being said, I respect their efforts and would understand if they wished to keep this quiet for the time being, which is why I confirmed with their product manager that it was okay to feature these in an episode. You may have received a different letter though I suspect that the one packaged with the heads was given to everyone involved. I'd recommend checking again to see if yours included any messaging about confidentiality. -Ben

      Donnie Fisk, you are a crybaby tattletale. I hope Evans kicks you off the roster list. I don’t want to purchase products from a company that endorses a 2 yr. old like you. I’m pretty sure you aren’t even cool enough to be a drummer.

    he HAD connections with them ... little do y'all know that the "letter" that comes with the head says confidential , call me whatever you like , I rest easy at night knowing I'm an honest person . Besides , I play for a well known artist so y'alls amateur remarks just make me laugh .

      Hey man, I appreciate that you’re looking out for the company and all but we wouldn’t have made this video if we didn’t receive permission. I talk to the team at Evans on a regular basis and this was totally sanctioned. Thanks for watching... -Ben

      @@SoundsLikeADrum yeah I'm done watching your videos. I don't feel any tester should be held in higher regard than any other of the 1,000 testers . Defeats the purpose of testing if " inside connections " precede anything else.

      It is probably safe to assume that his letter was different than yours. Having "had" connections with Evans/D'addario, and especially having worked in their product development and social media, he is likely very aware of any confidentiality agreements. My guess is that, while you are a beta tester, Ben has a "Reviewer" status or something similar. I totally respect you sending this Evans' way, but I suspect they've seen and approved it ;)

      Donnie, you’re totally entitled to watch or not watch whatever you choose. Other individuals have produced videos as well and D’Addario has approved them to be shared so this really isn’t special treatment.
      Regardless, let’s all act like adults here. No need for insulting anyone and it won’t be tolerated any further. Those that create a hostile environment going forward will have comments removed and risk being blocked. Let’s keep this civil and focus on the drum sounds. -Ben
