A extraordinary interview with an automobile legend, humble to recognize others greatness, proud of his achievements and with wisedom that only the years and the experience of life can bring. Together with Eddy Merckx the two athletic references of XX century Belgium Sports. Congratulations on the interviewer for the way he guided this interview allowing Jacky to expand his views and give us a peak on some great stories in the history of motor racing.

For me the best beyond the grid interviews. Great to hear that Jacky is obviously still a fan of watching racing and like many of us a big fan of moto gp. The guy is pure class.

What a wonderful holistic view Ickx has of motor racing, I get the sense that some (many?) drivers start to believe the PR but people like Ickx (and Hamilton and Hill and some notable others) know that without the team they cannot finish the job.

Jacky Ickx will be forever my hero.
In 1990 or 1991 when I was about fourteen years old, mainly on saturdays, I was often riding my bicycle to the few Porsche-, Ferrari-, Lancia- and Jaguar-dealers in the country. I tried to get brochures, spec-sheets, sometimes a nice flag or some other gadget.
One day I walked into the Porsche dealership in Brussels and saw there was some kind of tombola or lottery you could join to play and you could win a test-drive with the Porsche 911 Turbo on the next Brussels Motorshow.
Two weeks before the motorshow I got a letter that I had won a ride, which day/hour I had to be there...and not forget to bring my driving license. The day came, I went to the Motorshow and showed up at the Porsche boot. They didn’t seem very hasty to take someone for a ride who was not of driving age hence not a possible buyer. Eventually I was brushed off with some brochures and before I left I saw Jacky Ickx in the VIP-area, I walked up to him and asked for a signature on my 911 Turbo-brochure. He was very kind and even told the security guy I was supposed to be in that VIP-area. He made a bit of conversation with me and quickly heard I was a diehard motorsport-fan and that I knew most of his great victories. I also told him I had “won” a ride with the 911 but it didn’t happen in the end. He went out picked up the keys and took me for a wild ride with the 911 Turbo. When we were going around 200km/h on the Brussels Ring we were followed by two motorcycle policemen. They pulled us over and walked up to the driver’s side of the car, saw Jacky Ickx, went nuts (those guys were diehard Paris Dakar fans) and got back on their motorbikes.
He’s never arrogant or full of himself, just a wonderful person.

What a effin and blindin Legend this man is. I've devoured every podcast interview, read interviews, books, have a copy of 'Jacky Ickx, Mister Le Mans and Much More' by Ed Heuvink by my desk at all times. Never met him live, some day perhaps. I had not planned on Super Sebring this year but he is Grand Marshall and is being inducted into the Hall of Fame so I'm trying to manage the trip. Is it ever embarrasing to be almost 60 and be a fanboy haha. But he is such a philosopher, a thinker, who kindly shares his thoughts in public, you have to love him. I do take issue with Mr. Jackie Icks' claim that no one really likes the wet. A certain Sir Stirling Moss says, 'hold my beer' :) Anyway, great interview as always TC. Can you get him again?

But he and many other drivers demonstrate that you can be a legend without being world champion. There's a theory that Ickx threw the last GP of 1970 as to not take the title from Jochen Rindt. No idea whether it's true but he seems like the kind of guy who wants to win but also doesn't care too much about the glory.

My impression of Jackie Ickx was that he was quite forgettable as an F1 Driver, and as his racing record shows, he never was particulary impressive.
What was notable about Ickx was his lack of understanding of the Sport itself and its evolution into a serious World Sport,. In addition it is shocking to learn that as the other F1 drivers were desperately trying to get the racing circuits improved , especally as the speeds and performance of the cars out stripped the operating environments of the race tracks , Jacky Ickx ignored their efforts and failed to support this.
