Its well portrayed how Feraud first gets nasty with D'Hubert from a combination of sexual jealousy and the latter's slightly disparaging remarks about Bonaparte (the centre of Feraud's universe) There are still plenty of these guys around. Just check out Islamic State.

No one really knows why they dueled over 20x over the course of their lives, alot speculate it was a sort of competitiveness rivalry and by the time they got to 20 duels their infamy had increased so they kept going to keep their fame.

But if you find these causes noble reasons to die for I must say that we have to agree to disagree.
