    He did far worse than killing him, after all only the living can feel pain. He left him alive, yet "Dead", and having to live with the knowledge that he had been "Owned", that his very life was a gift of a man he had decided to hate, for a perceived slighting, a man he had tried to kill multiple times before. THAT is how you do it. THAT is settling the score.

    • @i_love_crpg

      Yes, letting him live is the wise thing to do here because this was a battle of egos, not a battle of neutralization.
      If the other guy was a genuine threat that needed to be removed than killing him would stop creating more evil

      That's why you don't get it. Its beyond what you want or need. Beyond the idea of comfortable life or winning. Honour is a path that outwardly seems insane and leads to nothing. I invite you to look into the why he went. To duel again and again. The fools errand.

      @@finnrobinson9986 It's basically fanaticism, the seeds are planted in your infant mind and reinforced throughout your life, if then you fail to individuate what else are you left with to make sense of your life than uphold this idea of honor.

      Napoleon had entire regiments of terminally dysfunctional guys like Feraud, and he knew how to use them.
      Its well portrayed how Feraud first gets nasty with D'Hubert from a combination of sexual jealousy and the latter's slightly disparaging remarks about Bonaparte (the centre of Feraud's universe)
      There are still plenty of these guys around. Just check out Islamic State.

    The duellists this movie was based on were actually friendly and respectful towards each other. No one really knows why they dueled over 20x over the course of their lives, alot speculate it was a sort of competitiveness rivalry and by the time they got to 20 duels their infamy had increased so they kept going to keep their fame.

      An insight offered by the director's commentary on that scene was that the duelling pistols were real and very, very expensive. Keitel wanted to throw the pistol away so Scott had to have a member of the production crew on the ground to catch the weapon as Keitel tossed it.

    • @Larrypint
      @Larrypint 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @ReasonAboveEverything
      @ReasonAboveEverything 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Larrypint Well, knife fights/attacks have always been something that took place very often in the middle east. Islam has nothing to do with it. Nor is it an Arab thing. Persians, assyrians, Israelis also lived under the same regional culture. What I have understood many duels were about personal offenses, disputes over women and ofenses regarding relatives. I find fighting to death or near death over these kind of matters very stupid. These are pretty much the same reasons that makes near eastern folk pick up their knives. But if you find these causes noble reasons to die for I must say that we have to agree to disagree.
