Will people maintain speed when entering these tunnels or will people suddenly go from 55 mph to 35 mph at the mouth of the tunnels? As a lifelong Hampton Roads resident, I already know the answer.
The new tubes construction will not take care of one existing issue. Trucks headed westbound will still be limited to a 13'6" clearance (as opposed to 14'6" clearance). They will be forced to remain in the existing original westbound tube and not shifted over to the converted eastbound tunnel (which will flip to westbound traffic once the two new eastbound tunnels are completed).;
I grew up in Hampton most of my life(58 yrs)it will be good for me not to fight traffic on bad days going to the VA med center.Tax dollars well spent!The southside,esp Va beach will benefit also.NHL franchise?
1964 . The Chesapeake bay bridge tunnel was built. 17.6 miles and 2 tunnels. Built in 3.5 years. Cost 200 million. Second span in 1999 without tunnels. 197 million. Today hrbt is more than 15 times the cost at 3.5 billion and 5 years to build? Sound like someone’s getting rich
The original “tubes” were pre-built metal and lowered onto the bottom. They are building these new ones differently. This would cause the price difference as well.
Man oh man gotta love new infrastructure always beautiful to see transportation being improved in the country
fun fact- its the same machine that dug the tunnel from France to England.

Is it true the new tunnel will have signs stating, "Maintain 95 MPH"? That way, we can cruise through at about 45.
You're spot on.Americans FEAR maintaining speed in TUNNEL
Finally. There was talk about doing that for 20-30 years.
This is a really cool animation!
Thanks Andy ! I'm super excited.

I hope these tunnel boring robot machines are more concise and efficient than my Roomba Robot!
Can’t believe I’m the first to comment! Long overdue road improvement. It will definitely improve traffic jams in the future.
This should have been done 30 years ago

Using computer technology for design and project planning makes things take 10 times longer
This is two tunnels and upgrading trestles and existing highways. Also, inflation is a thing.
200 million in 1964 is 1.7 billion today. There is more than just two tunnels included in the cost.

America: Another lane will surly fix traffic
