  • OASYS, Kronos, Virus, Deepmind, and Fantom all MIDI'd together. How to do it. We also get to see them all recorded into a WAV file. Process is identical on OASYS or Kronos.
    NOTE: Combis have their own tempo, so when I'm switching combis, the tempo is different from the metronome. For live use, turning the tempo knob can sync them up again. For recording, you can send tempo change to the control channel.

    I really like your videos, and I always learn something new. I took your advice and returned the Rev2 for an OB-6. I also kept the DeepMind12, love that little keyboard. Now I have Kronos 2 88, Korg M-3, DeepMind12 and the OB-6. Just recently added an Eventide H9 Max, which makes the OB-6 sound amazing!

    Bounce to disk does it very easy, converts it to WAV automatically.
    From there I was able to email the WAV file and also shovel it into an empty track in my DAW.

    Always wondered @scoopicman
    Is it possible to use Kronos as a midi Controller at the same time as a Sound Module? Meaning, lets say I'm using a DAW, and I want to play sound from the Kronos and record the MIDI inside my DAW and then playback that Midi track but the playback sound coming from the KRONOS?? WIthout using an additional Midi Controller that controls the Kronos??
    Any help here would be very much appreciated ;_) Thanks

    • @scoopicman
      @scoopicman  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe you understand this, but a lot of people don't. MIDI is just data. It is not recorded sound. The data is controller and note inputs; which controller you moved, when you pressed a note, and for how long. When the MIDI is played back, any device on that channel can respond with a sound. As long as they are hooked up (daisy chained), you could put 100 keyboards, modules, synths, drum machines, FX, etc. on the same channel, and they will play back the sounds. I don't use a DAW very much, but it should respond to Kronos as a MIDI controller (Kronos MIDI out to the DAW's MIDI input) and be able to control your sound module, as well. When you have a controller (Kronos) sending MIDI signals, you should be able to MIDI THRU to the module. The key is having them on the right channel. The controller has a TRANSMISSION channel (1 - 16) and the recorder or module has a RECEIVE channel (1 - 16).

    Thanks for the detailed reply. I will explore these options later today. I am creating audio backing tracks for a tribute band I am in. I generally do the "copy from program" procedure to maintain the soniic integrity when building up my sequences. The multiple versions of s sequence would work. I am trying to streamline the process as much as possible. Thanks for your help.

    Would it be possible to do similar sounds controls with a midi keyboard linked with a Korg Krome 88 ( bought in 2022, updated with the most recent firmware) ?

    Hi Scoop, one of the few midi experts who really seems to know what they are talking about AND has two of my keyboards the KRONOS and the FANTOM G. Can I pick your brain please as Roland no longer give tech support for keyboards once discontinued for 2 years or more and you have been kind enough to advise me in the past. I simply want to be able to get my Kronos in COMBI mode to change patches in the FANTOM LIVE mode. I have been able to achieve this using the correct MSB, LSB and PC numbers ( I have no issues getting the Fantom to change all connected keyboards ) however when the Fantom patch changes it immediately shows it as edited ( i.e. the little red check ticks next to some of the individual voices in the patch ) Korg tell me the issue is not with the Kronos as it is just sending out the program change info and to speak with Roland. Roland as I said don't support the Fantom G anymore so stumped. I know all your gear is midi'd up, could you if you have the time in between your busy schedule run a test to see if you can resolve this for me? I have tried turning off 15 of the 16 channels in the Kronos patch leaving just one set to EXT2 and msb 84 and lab 2 or 3 etc then any prog change no. Thanks in advance.

I have 2 old Roland MKS 20 modules, one working fine and the 2nd following power board repairs is working, showing voice listings, accepting midi prog changes etc but no sound. As I don't have the M-16C cartridge wondering if possible to midi the 2 modules together and transfer voice data/bulk dump or dump to a Mac and then load onto the other machine. I am creating MIDI sequences that are very IFX intensive. Chains of 3+ IFXs. So I start to run out of IFXs slots very quickly. I would like to be able to record these MIDI tracks with their associated IFXs directly into the audio tracks so as to free up IFX slots in MIDI sequences. Is there a way to do this directly. I know I can record the MIDI tracks as wave files and import those as wave files, but that seems like extra unnecessary steps. Can you point me in the right direction?

    • @scoopicman
      @scoopicman  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can record the L/R outputs to audio tracks, or you can route the last IFX in a chain to a REC BUS or another destination. The Audio Tracks can record from any of these sources. Have you recorded audio tracks, yet? Press the MULTI-REC box and arm whatever tracks you want. You can also stereo pair them from the dropdown menu on the Audio track page. You can also copy the same song to multiple slots and work out your FX in each of those. On the Track Edit page, the menu command COPY MEASURE can copy any or all measures/tracks from one song to another. I have a really old video that shows that. Unfortunately, TH-cam doesn't keep the quality up from old videos. It was done on the OASYS, but it's the same screens. th-cam.com/video/pxERQ5hME3A/w-d-xo.html Also, this is a bit of work, but if you want to keep it all in one song, you can switch as many effects around as you want. th-cam.com/video/jNnM4Ifx0qY/w-d-xo.html

    Is assigned to the corresponding track on the Kronos
    I am using USB to sync (instead of Midi cables)

      I've been lucky enough to make some money with that gear, so sometimes it pays back. I have no drinking, smoking, drug, or gambling expenses. Every 2 years or so, I buy a synth. Some of the gear in that room starts at the year 1988, which is why I have a lot. I take good care of gear, so it can sit there for over 30 years! For the big purchases, I bought Kronos in 2011, Virus TI in 2007, OASYS, in 2005. I usually get a credit deal; for example, I got the Deepmind 12, a couple years ago for around about $27 per month. Now that I have 4 kids, I rarely make big purchases. It's much easier when you are single. :>)

      No loser between the Kronos 2 and Montage; both have great sounds. I'm not a piano specialist, so hard for me to give you a personal answer. The Kronos also has some interesting 3rd party libraries. Some discussion of pianos, here: www.korgforums.com/forum/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=675566
      Several sounds played in this vid: th-cam.com/video/F8-JeAXfJzw/w-d-xo.html As far as arps, I believe Montage has the advantage. Kronos uses KARMA modules for reactive patterns. 4 of them can be going at the same time (in Combi or Song modes).

    Wow, someone with even more keyboards than me! Great stuff. I have just bought a Kronos and trying to fit it into my keyboard rig. A very simple requirement I have is to run my Roland MKS 20 piano module into the Kronos and then restrict the piano to a particular keyboard zone and on a particular midi channel ( e.g. channel 12 ) I have the piano working fine across the entire keyboard but despite setting the module and a Kronos Combi midi channel to the same channel with it set to EXT I am not having any success and would really appreciate your advice. I have had no problems doing this on the Fantom which is midi'd to 3 other keyboards but this is much more complex. Thanks in advance. Mike

    • @scoopicman
      @scoopicman  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike, you can use KARMA to control an external device's note range. I just did a split with my Deepmind 12 and Virus.. In my case, I am playing from channel 1. My Virus is on channel 15 and the DM is on channel 14. I have the DM playing the bottom keys, and the Virus playing the top half.
      Turn the physical KARMA switch on. On the screen, press the lower row KARMA tab. Uncheck the RUN box of each module you would like to use for keyzone transmission. Check the THRU IN Z box, under each module. Right above that, set your Bottom and Top note ranges. Under that, in the MIDI I/O section, set the channel for each module to control. On the left side, I just set it to "Gch." To the right of that, set it to channel 12, or whatever you want to control. This can be done from a Combi or Song.

      Hi Scoop, thanks could do with you living next door! How did you figure that one out and what page of the 1500 plus pdf pages was that on? I know you have a Fantom as well, can you tell me if it is possible to play a Fantom LIVE combination patch in full but on the Kronos keyboard. Problem I am finding is that the Fantom combinations are using 8 separate midi channels and I can tune into each 8 midi channels but not have them all playing at once? You should be working for Korg.

    • @scoopicman
      @scoopicman  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Didn't look at the manual, but was aware of KARMA note ranges. That was the first time I've tried keyzoning an external device. As for the Fantom performances, you'll probably find that any of the stacked stuff is on the same channel, where arp and drum sounds are on different channels. On the Kronos, only EXT tracks/channels will transmit to that board, so it's possible to play your internal Kronos sounds how you like, as long as they are set to INTernal.

    @peterstanton4283 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wow, scoopicman, the more I watch your tutorials, the more I learn, you just explain it so well and clear. I was just wondering about this. I use the Kronos 2, was thinking if I got a 2nd Kronos, using the first as the master, will the sequencer tell the 2nd Kronos what to do without confusing tracks and Midi channels? How would I set it up? So for example, if track 3 sequences a bass sound, and I want the same riff, but a different bass sound, I'd have to keep both on track 3 and Midi channel 3, correct? What if I bought a Yamaha Montage, used the Kronos as master, will there be a communication problem when the Kronos is the master sequencer, what do you think? Is WAV the only option or Kronos can export AIFF or other files? Thanks!! Great stuff.

    • @scoopicman
      @scoopicman  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kronos can export samples as AIFF or Wave.
      Montage doesn't have a full sequencer, so it should slave well to the Kronos. Sounds like you have a grasp on the channels. It can get as complicated as you want, for instance, you can change the sounds from the Kronos. Watch this video from 7 minutes on:

    Is it possible to record the midi output of the Korg Nautilus Arp and Drum accompaniment ?

    • @scoopicman
      @scoopicman  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't have a Nautilus, but I'm sure you can. Kronos (and probably Nautilus) can record 16 MIDI channels, and 4 audio tracks in a single recording pass. This is good for recording multi-timbral performances. On Nautilus, you have up to 2 arps, 1 step sequence, and a drum kit. Each of those will be assigned to a MIDI channel. Assuming you are playing on channel 1 (a piano or synth), arps and drums may be triggered to play along. Arp 1 might be on channel 2, arp 2 on channel 3, a step sequence on channel 4, and drums are usually on channel 10. Yes, this can all be recorded. On Kronos, you check the MULTI-REC check box to accomplish this. Then you arm each track that you want to record on. Select REC for each track. On Kronos, if you wanted to record a combi, pressing ENTER plus REC/WRITE would bring that combi or program into the sequencer and it is ready to record automatically. I'm sure that Nautilus has this capability, because it is basically a Kronos, minus KARMA.

    Hi; i hope, After i saw your videos maybe you can help me.
    2 Keyboards;
    1 Triton Studio, 1 Kurz PC3; Triton should Send Bank/Program changes to the PC3.
    the Triton: Setting up a Combi; Channel 8s Midi is set to EXT2, type in correct bank/program number to where the PC3 need to change to. Everything works fine. But: when i Play the Tritons Keyboard; I also get Sounds from the PC3 Engine. I only want to transmit B/P Changes, not played notes on the Tritons keyboard!

    • @scoopicman
      @scoopicman  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is the PC3's MIDI channel also on channel 8? If you are playing Triton notes on channel 1 (which most combi stacks are on), then make sure the PC3 is not on 1. Make sure it's MIDI receive is not set to Receive ALL.

      Hi; but the kurzweils Master has to be on the same Channel in order to receive the program change cc. Or am I wrong? Otherwise no cc will be transmitted...

    • @scoopicman
      @scoopicman  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@279oxygene Put the Kurzweil on whatever channel you are putting the EXT 2 program assignment on. If you use track slot 16 on the Kronos (and the channel is set to 16 for that), set the Kurzweil to 16. Then turn on MUTE (instead of PLAY) for that slot. Having MUTE on will stop the Kronos' keyboard from playing the EXT 2 programs. You should still be able to play it from the Kurz's keyboard.

    • @scoopicman
      @scoopicman  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      In Sequencer mode, any track on the first (A) keyboard can be set to INT (internal sounds) or EXT, which plays sounds on your second keyboard (B). The setting, BOTH, plays sounds from both keyboards, at the same time. Each track can play its own channel (select one from 1 - 16). If your second Kronos (B) is in Sequence mode, keyboard A can play any of its sounds on any tracks (1 - 16). Track 2 on A should play the sound assigned to Track 2 in the B keyboard. If you are not in Sequencer mode, go to Global - Basic - MIDI and you can change MIDI CHANNEL, at the top of the page.

    Hi, thank you sharing this. Can anyone here help? I have connected an Optical cable from Kronos output to audio interface input. No signal is being transferred, any ideas why? I cannot find anything in the Kronos settings. Also, I have just connected a minilogue xd to the Kronos via midi. the only problem is, that the presets keep changing on the minilogue when I press certain parameters on the Kronos, is there a way stop this? At the moment I just want the Kronos keys to trigger the minilogue. All the best

      @@mmhcreates Yeah, I was going to suggest disabling Program Change. As to the first question, your Kronos should be outputting. I use an S/P DIF cable, outputting my OASYS sounds into the Kronos. On the Kronos, I go to the Global Audio Mixer and assign S/P DIF to "L/R." I have no idea about your audio interface settings, but Kronos should be outputting the sound. Sometimes, I unplug the cable and replug it. There are two slots, In and Out. Make sure it's plugged into the right one.

      @@scoopicman I appreciate your help. I tried what you suggested and it worked, but could have been because I took the optical lead out and put back in, as you suggested. I assumed at the time it was more to do with changing the Global setting. The optical lead doesn't fit the Kronos properly, it is loose. Not sure why this is, as it fits much better into the interface optical in.
      I will try changing the Global settings back and see if it still works.
      Thank you very much for helping.
      I purchased the Kronos a couple of months ago, but UPS damaged it, and they had it back to assess damage etc.
      Anyway its a long story, my point is the Kronos is new to me and I'm trying to make sure everything is working properly.
      Does your Kronos keybed respond well to softer playing?, the main issue I have with mine is the feel of the keys. They play and work fine, until I won't to play softly, then it just doesn't feel right, feels clunky.
      I have read that the keybed can go and can be replaced, but that seems rather costly. But I supposed it is cheaper than purchasing a new one.

    • @scoopicman
      @scoopicman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      SSD on Kronos slays the amount of sounds (samples) the OASYS can load, but the OASYS interface and build quality is better. Getting a bit old to really consider, due to rarity of motherboard replacements. OASYS advantages: The huge screen (10.4"), which can lay flat or tilt up, HD-1 (sample) engine polyphony is 172 vs 140, 4 analogue inputs vs 2 on Kronos, 10 analogue outputs vs 6 on Kronos, more LED indicators on knobs/sliders, better synth action keyboard (76 keys vs Kronos 61), better organization of sounds (AL-1, STR-1, LAC-1 sounds are mostly in their own groups, easy to remove 2 screws to open.

    • @shalashaska5478
      @shalashaska5478 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      scoopicman Thanks for your detailed response. The screen on the OASYS seems great, I like how it can tilt up for easier viewing. Programming on the Kronos feels like staring at a cellphone for hours sometimes.
      Interesting about the build quality, that’s one of my biggest disappointments with the Kronos. The key bed is great, the instrument is great, but the knows/sliders/buttons feel extremely cheap. Almost every other synth/keyboard I have has sturdier knobs and sliders, even ones that are < $1000.

    this guy is nuts, he has his kronos and virus set at to steep an angle, any one who plays a keyboard should know that your arm/hand should be parralel to the keyboard , if not it is very difficult to play properly, i find on you tube many keyboard players are guilty of this mistake, even big name artists are allso guilty of this and i cannot understand why these people dont try, by trial and error to realise this for them selves
