Watch Dogs | Aiden Pearce is a GREAT Protagonist

  • To me Watch Dogs 1 is a criminally underrated game and one of my favorite parts about Watch Dogs is it's main character, Aiden Pearce. Aiden Pearce's story is one of tragedy, hardship, acceptance, and growth, and I loved how Aiden was portrayed in the game as it felt so emotional and authentic. May people label Aiden as depressing and bland, which I strongly disagree with and in this video I explain why. If you enjoyed this video on Watch Dogs and Aiden Pearce I'd appreciate it if you considered dropping a like on the video, commenting your opinion, and subscribing to the channel as it really does help me out and motivates me to keep going. Thanks for watching and have a blessed day everybody!!!!

Yeah the story of first Watch Dogs is the best imo. Watch Dogs 2 and Legion may have very nice gameplay and hacking options but Ubisoft nailed the Chicago setting and the game had an awesome soundtrack. Don't get me wrong I love Legion and driving around beautifully recreated London, but story-wise the first one nails it. Having no main protagonist in Legion just doesn't give one the feeling of having a story imo.

I’m currently replaying watchdogs and I found some audio logs where aiden talks about trying to learn intimidation tactics and emotional masking techniques. And I don’t mean to give Ubisoft more credit than they deserve, but aidens general “blandness” does seem to be intentional, like he’s supposed to be jaded to it all, while also masking his true personality because it’s dangerous for him and others if anyone can find a crack in his persona. And it’s really cool seeing that persona crack a little when something happens he didn’t count on, like Clara being a girl or the way he starts to worry about bedbug when he realizes he may have gone too far. It’s also cool to watch the persona fade over the course of the story as he gets closer to his new friends tbone and specifically Clara. I 100% agree the writing didn’t get near the credit it deserved

    • @ozytastic
      @ozytastic 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

I've replayed the game countless times and honestly I never even really thought about that. It really does make sense because he's a vigilante, he can't go showing his emotions or personality because it could be exploited and used against him. He has to be a cold, bland character when dealing with enemies so he is more efficient when dealing with threats. So to see him lower that overtime as he grows closer to Clara and Tbone does make it seem like his "blandness" is intentional and part of his character as opposed to just being "bad writing". Would have been nice to see his story continue in 2, see how he has changed since then as opposed to what we got with 2.

What the hell is wrong with you?
“I wouldn’t even know where to begin.”
He doesn’t even really think about it. All he cares about is getting revenge. Where the backstory would have been helpful some in understanding him is that he obviously had problems before the event which became his primary motivation; that just made it worse though. But it also led to him having character growth at the end of the game. That’s why I was so disappointed that he didn’t return as the main protagonist in the 2nd installment. His character is unfinished overall but was perfectly completed in the original game. The sequel was where the rest of his character should have been completed.

I absolutely loved Watch dogs 1 , it felt dark, bold, unapologetic in the sense that they didn't care about the reaction of critics about letting you play as a flawed protagonist. I'm honestly fed up with the typical "perfect" protagonist who never make morally bad decisions. Aiden wasn't that white hero type, he was a vigilante, very evil at times but with good goals for the most part. He reminds me of Deek from days gone but aiden isn't as crazy or mentally messed up, and he reminds me a little bit of Jin sakai. I do get why people think he's lame, he doesn't throw jokes around but that just makes sense considering the dark plot, his character development just made sense. Max payne doesn't throw jokes around as well does that mean he's bland? i don't think so, a good director has to develop a character based on the environment and experiences they live through. i haven't played watch dogs 2 because i felt like they just took aiden and did exactly the opposite of what he is to satisfy the critics.. it felt forced, please tell me if I'm wrong, cause I'm willing to give it a try!

Aiden goes through so much throughout the story like: the deaths of so many characters, biggest betrayals (Jordi and Damien). The feeling is indescribable, it's as if you are literally living as Aiden and suffering all of his losses. It's not about the bitter side of Aiden anymore, it's the story and the fact that you are uncontrollably sympathetic towards the character. I DEFINITELY DO NOT regret picking up this game AT ALL

Aiden is awesome, and his connection to Assassin’s Creed Black Flag was so cool, and going to the Pawn Shops and looking at the games and hacking seeing a kid play as Edward it was just really fun. Also just his nickname being the Fox felt like it could relate to that this is like the modern day thieves guild from 2 where maybe the thieves guild which would make sense they would upgrade to data and technology in the modern day and he’s given the same nickname as the Fox as the thieves guild leader in 2 that I think it’d be really cool if they did connect the franchises in a similar way to that.

This is one of my new favourite videos, so thank you for that.
Seriously, I never understood the hate Aiden got. I got this game when it first came out (I mean, I was 14 at the time, so probably not the best age), and to this day it remains one of my all-time favourites. The story was good, perhaps a little predictable in places, but I didn't go in expecting a super complex quest. And Aiden's character fits that perfectly. He's trying to solve the mystery he stumbled into, the one that got his niece killed. It's hardly surprising he's not the most talkative of guys, but he's not the plank of wood that a lot of people try and make him out to be.
Besides, if you want comic relief, we've got Jordi and T-Bone for that!

One of the strongest points for me to play and replay this game until now is Aiden.
I just love the way he operates, the psychological and methodical process behind his actions.
Make them seem really believable and yet tells much about aiden himself, this punisher side of him in contrast with the broken man that manipulates so easily others but is too emotionally damaged to move on his own guilt, or to even understand his own emotions.
    Thanks for the video man

Say what you will about Aiden Pearce. He was the exact character this game needed him to be. Exploring this extremely dark, serious version of Chicago as a character like Ezio simply wouldn’t have worked. It required some form of redemption arc that has many layers and grey areas, and Aiden was the perfect character to deliver just that.

He felt like more of a neutral protagonist than an outright anti-hero. The game sort of nudges you along towards playing Aiden like an anti-hero and that lends more to making Aiden more likeable/acceptable to the audience than being anything pivotal to the plot. Towards the end of the game though Aiden’s range of focus does genuinely extend more towards the citizenry as a whole, albeit in a detached way. His motivation was his niece and his family, everything else was inconsequential for the most part but he wouldn’t act in wanton ways towards innocent people either in any sort of directly harmful way to their person. I felt like they did a great job balancing him. He’s neutral because although he resorts to criminal methods of handling a problem or acquisition of what he needs, he still has enough of a conscience to protect people from getting hurt and looking out for their immediate best interests of they’re confronted with a dangerous situation. And he’s emotionally charged against predatory types of people for obvious reasons.
He’s not a generic “law abiding citizen by day making an honest living, crime fighter at night”. He’s a person with a mysterious and morally questionable past as a thief who sees what happens as a result of those who get involved with that lifestyle. Instead of swearing it off though he utilizes his abilities to their fullest potential to do something about the truly awful people and “side of life” that he once operated in for the purposes of providing for himself and his family.
Is he a “good guy”? Depends on how you define that and what you consider the requirements of a “good guy”. He objectively does good things which are to the benefit of society as a whole even though it comes to a great personal cost for himself. How he does that though is definitely something a lot of people wouldn’t approve of, especially with the various types of threats he uses for intimidation and the like. And his indifference towards using violent means.
Is he a “bad guy”? He does bad things to bad people, the same things that bad people do to good people. And he is guilty of car jacking, digital robbery, etc. Things that banks have insurance for or things which people have auto insurance for. Doesn’t make it right, but his actions cause minimal harms to others (for what can be directly observed).
Whether he is a good person or a bad person is up to he player to decide, and by that I am not referring to the morality gameplay mechanics. I’m referring to the overall narrative. He’s actually more believable than a lot of other anti-heroes. And just as a person altogether too. He’s not larger than life, he’s not invincible, when he feels loss it’s about as genuine and relatable as I’ve seen for something so underrated and for an action platformer no less (I find him relatable for my own reasons). In such a fantastic world and for how large a role technology plays, he is surprisingly well grounded. It’s all just a means to an end for him and how ordinary he feels when interacting with other people helps make that version of Chicago seem believable and ordinary.
The first installment of Watch Dogs was better than people tend to give it credit for and although it’s not perfect by any means, what was solid and noteworthy is actually much better than what a lot of other similar titles have to offer. Of all the new protagonists that have been created over the past decade or so he is easily one of the best.
I love the larger than life types of games just as much as the next person. Tomb Raider is great but Lara isn’t exactly relatable as a person. That’s not a bad thing, and it’s one of the reasons why so many people prefer those types of stories in a game, just like in movies. Aiden was surprisingly different. When I first saw trailers for the game and what the basic plot was, I thought he was going to be generic and was just how the player would interact with “The Chicago of Tomorrow!” but Aiden ended up being the best part about the game.

After he got his revenge , he decided to vowed then that he doesn’t look back anymore, he doesn’t regret, he looks forward. Everything is connected and he’ll use that to expose, to protect and if necessary to punish. in other words he embraced his role as the vigilante.

They really did nail an atmosphere once you soak in the story. It's worth playing a second time and treating it like the best tutorial ever made for a Punisher open-world game.

Great video and breakdown. Its good to know others experienced watchdogs as the story and character-driven game that it is, and felt the same emotional journey. at the time, I had a shit PC so I didnt care about graphics quality anyway. I felt like people were missing one of the best original narratives in a long time. I love how you mention that as a player, you watch aiden transform into a monster. The gameplay itself enforces this narrative: I tried to play non-lethally and as stealthy as possible, but the events of the game drive you, the player, into desiring more and more violent acts. There are definitely times when murder is unavoidable so its not exactly a deus-ex level of choice and consequence, but it was a powerfully written narrative that, like you said, very intimately connects the player with the character they're playing
sorry i'm ranting but i just love watchdogs so much and i can't stand how underappreciated it is! Thanks for making this

With that WD1 is a breath of fresh air from the “get rich or die trying” games we’ve played throughout the years and what better way to inject justice & introduce you to the tech overlord world than with Aiden & his motivation for being a tech savvy vigilante of WD.

Aiden is the best character. Sure he does not express himself, he never says “Man I’m sad right now”. It is in how he speaks that conveys his emotions. If anyone played the Digital Trips (rip was hoping they’d return for WD:L), in Alone we get to see how Aiden views things. He is alone, he can’t trust anyone and the people he can trust, his family, they see him for what he is. Nicole is in the DT, and what she says is what he is afraid to hear. She blames him for Lena’s death because he blames himself.

Exactly, for a man who dismantled an entire underworld of a corrupt city mostly on his own is someone you don’t want to anger or cross paths with.

Aiden might be one of the most underrated protagonist in video game history. He is such a good and interesting character.

Aiden is the perfect character for an dark path/retribution type hacker. Seeing him with all highs and lows progress trough the endless rabbithole of shit was peak character development. He fitted perfectly into WD1. Only downpoint was the death of Clara.

Aiden was the batman of watch dogs. We was dark and wouldn't be afraid to kill. Plus his story made me feel like I was aiden. I felt so attracted to him.

He’s my second favorite video game protagonist under Arthur Morgan
