It helps. When I tried them on, I felt they'd be too stiff for my liking and that I'd have to rely on the toe spring to roll forward, which is not what I want. I don't want the shoe to roll; I want it to plant and bend.

The OG ones were exactly the same when new... I have fresh pairs of each and the flex is exactly the same, just break it in

controversial take here but i kinda prefer it, pretty much just the heel and the back part of the shoe that is stiff, the rest is bendy, I still have a couple of the older versions around and they definitely are bendy-er at heel area, i also appreciate that the outsole is more uniform underfoot, since I have to pretty much size up (froodo -wide feet) and my foot doesn't quite align up with the rubber outsoles of the old one, which i know its only a small thing, but i noticed it on the new one haha, i think if you give it some time it will break in too.

just to add I hate the laces because they are too 'slick' way too thin so when you want to synch them down you added unwanted pressure, pretty every Altra shoe problem, so I automatically swapped them over to oval laces you know what the rest of the running shoe world uses, and they always work like a charm with all altras (every altra shoe i've owned I change the laces..., yup its annoying but worth doing)

The predecessor has disappeared in my size. I don't want the heavy and stiff version 2 - but there is no other shoe on the market that is similar. I'm heartbroken. I should have stocked up but I didn't

The 2 is a crime. It means the original will disappear. But the 2 is worse in every respect. The one was a great shoe but already too heavy (211g at my size), the 2 is 249g . To put things into perspective: lightweight shoes by saucony or asics weigh between 150 and 180g. This is 2024 you shouldn't run in shoes that weigh more than 200g. 249 is ludicrous. Who is going to buy them?

unfortunately, I'll still buy them because they're the only available wide toe box shoe in my country. And I 100% agree based on the reviews I've watched so far, this racer 2 isn't an upgrade from the OG racer, sadly.
I daily racer and even race w/ it, but with how the racer 2 is, I now need to buy a race day shoe.

i'd still buy them haha, since its foot shaped, find it to be a good cross trainer, since they stiffen up the heel and even out the the outsole through the shoe, feel confident lifting (moderate weight) and running (since the mid to the forefoot is still arguably as flexible at least at the bending point of where you're land and push off/toe off) it's actaull become a really versatile shoe i prefer it over the non-racer version

249g is a men's US size 10.5... not significantly different than the first one, and there's no point in making it lighter for it's purposes, it would mess up all the other characteristics people love about it.
