I hear a slight difference but have some suggestions to improve the experiment. If you’re looking for an example that might show a more obvious difference, I recommend using round wound strings. Rounds have a lot higher presence overtone frequencies compared to flats. The muting at the nut dampens sympathetic resonance and unwanted overtones caused by vibration between your fretted note and the nut. Yes, I have rounds on a couple basses, and always use the fret wrap.
There’s a shorter decay but not as much as you would with a Nordy or other bridge mute
Hard to tell. I want to say yes. But it’s also quite difficult to tell if my brain is making something up.
