    Heyyyyy lovelies, Champing in the UK I thought I would bring you along with us as we experience our very first Champing trip. Champing is camping in a church. Champing is becoming increasingly popular as an alternative to camping. Run by the Church trust to create income for the most at risk churches in the UK. Churches that have been de-commissioned and churches that have lost their congregation over time. We chose to stay at All Saints church in Aldwincle. A sleepy village in Northamptonshire. My partner is also named Aldwinckle and he was excited to stay in the village from whence his name derived. Big words for me there guys haaaaa input from Tim clearly. lol
    We take you with us from the moment we open the door .. visiting the local villages and towns and giving you an all round idea of what it is like to stay in a church.
    We booked for 2 nights. We stayed for one. This was down to a couple of factors. The rain was never ending be careful what you wish for .. I also encountered a small fear I never knew existed so we both were happy with one night. Some people have stayed up to a week.
    Built in the 1200's All Saints church served its community until it closed 150 years ago. The bigger church at the top of the village became the dominant place of worship and is still used to this day.
    The word Aldwinckle / Aldwincle is said to mean 'a bend in the river' and the river runs alongside the village.
    The name is said to have lost it's 'K' when the two villages became one and one church became the prominant church.
    Aldwinckle Lake however, maintained the K in the name. So it's all a bit of a mystery.
    If you are interested in exploring Champing then please check out
    champing.co.uk/
    They provide:
    camp beds
    tea, coffee, sugar and hot chocolate. with Mugs.
    A washing station and a one gas burner with kettle.
    You will need your own bedding. No cooking on site so I would recommend finding a church with great local amenities. A local pub or restaurant will see you good. Alternatively grab your food on the way in but bring plates. They do not supply plates.
    Every church is different most have dry ECO toilets and some have flushing toilets so do check this out.
    We were warm and toasty inside the church so we think we were super lucky. We did pack layers for a chilly night but they were not needed.

    Gorgeous!! I lived in Germany for just over a year (1985/86) and loved visiting castles older then any place in the US. I lived for 8 of those months in a “house” that was over 200 years old!! Just amazing.

    What a dream that would be for me to stay in that place overnight. WOW, It's so gorgeous, I love it. I would be doing more than touching those walls I would be hugging them, I love castles as well. That treat bag for George was just precious. I do not go up in high rise buildings. One of my fears besides spiders.

    Claire, I also love Gregorian chants. It is such beautiful music. I have one CD from the 80s and haven't listened to it in years. I am the only person I know who enjoys that music. I never think to play it when I am alone. Got to change that. Lol. Champing is such a novel idea. I can think of a few churches in the states I would like to have to myself for a day. Unfortunately our churches don't have the history that's in the UK or Europe. My imagination would go wild thinking of the monks chanting during the canonical hours. There I am waffling along. Wonderful video. ❤❤❤

    Being so new, there are no churches in disuse here that are in good enough shape to do this. Not a lot of stone to withstand time in California. I LOVE the architecture and history of the UK, and I would be so excited to go “champing.” I always have to touch the walls of historical places - doors, columns, anywhere others have been or touched. It’s like I can commune with them in a way. I also am ** obsessed ** with bats! 😂 I find them fascinating. So cool, Claire. What an awesome experience!

    • @athomewithclaire
      @athomewithclaire  ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally get it .. I do that when I visit castles and just think who walked this path 600 years ago or who touched this wall its so amazing to even imagine the history :)

  • @LiveItLikeLisa
    @LiveItLikeLisa ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Wow amazing experience! This is something Australia lacks in this regard. It looks so stunning! Would love to go back to the UK one day and visit these historic places. I think I would be fine sleeping in there as I have the opposite fear, I don’t like feeling enclosed. I have to sit on an aisle seat at the cinema, I always drive in the car with the window down, even just a crack. I hate elevators, I don’t like the blankets covering my feet. The thought of my arms and legs not being able to move or stretch out makes me feel nauseous and unable to breath just thinking about it. Being locked in a box, coffin or closet I would actually die of panic before I died of natural causes. But yeah the bats, bugs and spiders would also be a ‘no deal’ for me and just camping in general but I’d definitely go for a day visit 😂😂

    This was so fun! Just finished watching!! I wish they had this concept here! Or I wish I could teleport Gracie and us over there! Love love love it! Claire! It’s funny! I’m claustrophobic yet I cannot sleep unless I feel like I have a close space and lower ceiling the better. I need to feel safe and and I’ve always thought it was just me too!!! We are legitimate 🤣. I always tell Scott I need a safe cocoon when sleep! Thank you for enlightening me and validating my unknown fear too 🤣😘💙.

    I ADORE Gregorian Chant, but then I'm a Trad. Catholic. 😅👍🙏 I've never heard of Champing, but would definitely love to give it a try. 😊💕 I'm a bit jellie, as we don't have that in the U.S. 😥
    Yeah, hunger and I don't get along well, either! 😁 Hypoglycemia is a thing!
    Northumbria, you said? OOOOH! What a *MAGNIFICENT* Church! Is it old Norman style? I'm not great at architectural styles.
    Oh, WOW, even the old Baptistry is there! 😲 It is sooo beautiful inside! Those mullioned windows...wow! The lovely white stone work...limestone, maybe? Oh, you said it probably was...doh! Maybe I'd best hold off commenting 'til you're done? 😁
    Oh, so awesome to see those beautiful gravestones. No, death is part of life, doesn't bother me. I'd just pray for them. 😊🙏
    Would love to hear bat-chatter!
    Yes!!! When walking up ancient stairs or touching old stone, I *do* think of those who came before me...and wonder about those who will come after. It's a headtrip!
    Stayed to the end! Hmmmm, best not to try sleeping in the Sistine, yeah? Talk about ceiling detail...!

    Wow that church looks like one of the Metcalfe card kits I use for my model scenic. so beautiful. My late brother was restoring a former stately home before he died. there was a church i next to the house, not in use - it could have been used for this. It was beautiful, and in the grounds of the house, Hadzor Hall.... if he and his Mrs were still alive - their church would have been amazing for this experience
