can you answer this question? I know that the orientation of the camera determines the orientation of the video (vertical records a landscape video and horizontal records a vertical video). my question is if you rotate the camera while recording. does it keep the initial orientation? that would be nice as you could record a landscape-oriented video and do some nifty motions of the camera while not changing the video perspective.
This is really cool, but would I use this rather than the latest iPhone in my pocket. Don't think I would. Is there really a market for these? That said, excellent review, Gordon. Thank you.
Love this. Just what I’m looking for. The built in stand. I’m into small cameras where I can carry around just in case I find something interesting to vlog about. I currently use the dji osmo pocket and doing make shift tripod for my sit-down vlogs so yes, this is definitely what i need. Awesome review!
Interesting artifacts around the edges of focus areas in the stabilized footage. Specifically around the edges of your body, where it transitions to a background farther away. I wonder if it’s a product of TH-cam’s compression, the compression from editing, or something else? Either way, it’s quite distracting, even on a small phone screen, and I wonder if that will be a permanent shortcoming?
Digital stabilisation always has some odd arefacts, especially when you wobble as much as I do. Plus without any picture profiles, you're having to rely entirely on the default image processing here. But it is a beta, so maybe it'll change.
I really like the ergonomics of the camera and some of the features, but the lack of robust build quality, inability to swap batteries, and the just ok stabilization makes me still think a modern Action camera is more use able for a grab and go style vlogging setup.
Just looking into this camera as I was intrigued by the size and form factor. But on the canon website it says that the effective photo resolution was 15.2MP, and back calculating the crop factor from the 19mm equiv and 6.6mm actual focal length makes the crop 2.88, vs the normal 2.7 for a 1 inch…so it looks like it’s not using the whole sensor like the Sony rx0 I and II. A bit disingenuous for canon to keep claiming it’s large 1 inch sensor when it’s not using it all.
I'm sure there are certainly some things going on that we need to find out! BUT when calculating, bear in mind 18mm is the equivalent focal length for the full 3:2 shaped diagonal. The quoted 19mm is when cropped to 16:9 for video. It's confusing!
wow, only 1hr of filming? that's not good. Hopefully there's a way to mount an external battery and power it via USB-C. But that will certainly add size and weight.
i think it would have made more sense to have the record button in the back cause it's easier to press one button without looking.... and the front have all the controls currently seen on the back... cause you want to see how you look with the changes and not have to keep flipping and change and look at yourself again over and over until you get it right... makes sense ?
no zoom... internal battery... killers for me. bummer. Please try to carry a microfiber towel to clean the lens glass before your shots.. it was driving me crazy.
It drove me crazy too. believe it or not, it's not visible when filming, but only when playing back the high res video files. Same for very small dust particles, you can barely see them when filming.
Gordon, the screen appears painfully small. and very very fiddly. Amazing concept but Canon MUST design some different user interfaces for different screen sizes. Better still, give the option to tailor..They are draining every last INCH of that ole sensor aye..
Just a little something I noticed. It's Ok (although it doesn't look to me) if the lens contains fingerprint when not in use, but based on the sudden loss of contrast in the scene against the sun, I can tell that either the fingerprint was still there or the lens was not properly cleaned. Other than that, very good.
Best review from the best photography channel! How bright is the screen in sunny weather? About half, one quarter, or one eigth as bright as an iPhone?
Odd comparison, the G7X III is not a dedicated vlogging camera, it's an all-around point-and-shoot camera, which is also very good for still photography, a task for which the V10 is utterly unsuitable. The V10 ought to be compared to a current quality mobile phone and the question to ask is why buy this toy-like device if you already own a good smartphone?
Thank you for such a nice review. The camera seems to be perfect for vlogging with such a small design and such a big sensor. But as I could see in other video samples, the stabilization is not that great while walking. And digital IS makes walking in the evening looks like glitches all the time. Why no optical IS? Sony X3000 was killing it with it. This v10 camera doesn't have HDR mode and has a small unreplaceable battery... How can it beat mobile phones like iphone 14 or Samsung 23 Ultra? I think good points to this camera are a form factor, mic input, cool streaming options, wide angle lens and price. The big sensor without proper software don't do much in low-light conditions. Unfortunately! Maybe some issues will be fixed with a new firmware update. But I guess I'll wait for V20.
Shooting without a tripod is ok in a studio. There are many places you don't have a table handy so a tripod would be needed. Having a still lens makes the camera lighter but in some situations being able to zoom in would be niece. Interesting device.
Can I also lock the lighting and focus in automatic mode and make really close close ups with it? I don’t vlog but I make art video’s. I want to be able to film those close up detail shots and lock the focus so that the camera doesn’t focus on the back on my hand or paintbrush instead of the paper. Also locking the lighting is important so the light isn’t flickering when I move my hands in and out, especially when I speed up the footage, that can be very annoying. I hope you can help me with this. I currently film with my smartphone but I’m searching for a replacement.
I'm not sure you can do this reliably. I think you'd be better off with a mirrorless camera or DLSR where you can manually lock things and be sure they will behave!
I truly enjoyed how informative and clear you are. Mostly the quick comparisons you do "with and without" when explaining a feature. Questions how is the ease of use when editing using this Canon V10, are there any comments on editing features? Thanks ! USA
I think they might in one of the kits. The strange part is they went to a third party to make them. I suspect the V10 wasn't originally designed for outdoor / handheld use
This reminds me a lot of those Sony Bloggies that were released in the late 2000s. Weirdly though I think this makes a lot more sense now than they did then.
Great review, Gordon. This seems an odd design choice for canon. I’m not impressed by the image quality, stabilization, or mic. The microphones produce a sound reminiscent of nails on a chalkboard. Rolling shutter seems quite prevalent, but I suppose at this price, whaddya gonna do? Except, at this price, it directly competes with action cameras which have far superior image quality (from the early reviews at least) and stabilization. The body build looks archaic in contrast with action cameras. That stand is atrocious. I don’t know about this one. I thought Sony’s wildly overpriced ZV-E1 was a bad move, but this one is right up there. This, of course, is just my humble opinion.
I thought the stand was the best part! I agree, hit and miss in many respects, so quite a polarising product. But if it hits for you, like for my desk overview, it can be pretty good.
Compare with price the quality is look better than ZV1F in term of colour of his skin tone , dynamic range and stabilization. And iphone 14 can buy two of this camera.
I think I see this as part of my cellphone budget. As far as phones go, I have a 5G Sony Xperia 10 iii, and I won't actually need a new phone for probably 5 - 10 years. I have already excluded 6G as a superfluous technology. So if I pick up a V10 (or something like it) in the next few years, that becomes an "enhancement" for my overall photographic capabilities with minimal economic impact. It can fit. . . .

@@amlivinginhell it really all depends on how much you want to spend. If your just dipping your toes in to the world of action cameras, then go with these, xtu-s3 pro ($119), Akaso Brave 7 ($169) or SJcam sj10 ($200) dual screen all are great for their price, so much so, I have all three myself. Then if you want to step up the DJI Action 3 ($329) or the Go Pro 9 ($249). all the prices I showed, are the brand new prices, you can find them used. All these choices are far better then the Cannon and can do much more, you wont be limited to weather, place or anything.
I was honestly about to get one of these until you mentioned the non-replaceable battery. That's a complete deal killer for me. When I'm out making a video, I can go through 3 batteries easily. Needing to stop every hour or so to recharge is just not feasible. A couple of questions: 1). How long is the charge time 2). How is the low light performance?
It’s not for me I hope to see a more traditional vlog focused camera from Canon someday but for the time being I think the Eos M50 Mark 2 or Sony’s Zv line are almost perfect look’s like those are a good buy for vloggers but maybe pricey for some if Canon comes out with a competitive to GoPro on price good vlogging camera I’d go buy it imagine the people that made the 70-90d + compact since + made with vlogging mainly in mind + GoPro pricing + mic jack?
Great review thanks. Refreshingly to the point unlike many youtube reviews that detour into superfluous commentary. A couple of points for future perhaps: some evaluation of low-light capability (at f 2.8 I assume it should be OK) - is this affected by stabilization modes and what is auto focus like in low light.
Up until today I had planned to get the Sony ZV-1F. However, this is an even more compact option. Now I want this. Excellent review as always Gordon! Also, nice shelves with some dream Micros ( as said in the UK ).
You're the first to mention my vintage collection! I thought more people would! PS - watch out for the Sony announcement next week, they've teased a vlogging camera.
@@cameralabs That's a bummer. Would be a good firmware update for them to make. I'm also a bit disappointed they opted for a F2.8. I'd have preferred an F1.8 or F2.0 like the Sony fixed lens competition has. F2.8 isn't so good for indoor use.
How does this Canon V10 compare with the Sony ZV-1F. From what I have seen so far, the low light quality is worse and the AF is as bad or worse. I like the ergonomics/form factor and the flip up screen ... but overall just not good enough. Please anyone ... release a 20mm equivalent vlogging camera with a 1" stacked 10mp max sensor with IBIS and pdaf for $700.
Thanks for the review and introduction of this interesting product. I don't vlog and I already have a Zoom corporation Q2n-4K that I use as my webcam when in my home office, but based on your YT for me it seems like an excellent secondary webcam. Some questions: when you state the focal length is this in digital small format (marketed as "full frame") sensor equivalent? Since the sensor size appears to be smaller than apsc then I would have liked hearing this in no uncertain terms! Are the photo and filming formats 3:2 and 16:9 only or can you do 1:1 or 4:3? I am going to buy you a coffee!
Thanks for the coffee Joe! Yes, to clarify, the sensor is a small 1in type, so the actual focal length is 6.6mm. If this were a full-frame / 35mm system, it would deliver coverage equivalent to 18mm for photos, but as you know, the sensor is much smaller.
Did you forget to have some sample test of still picture? I really love to see the actual files of still picture from V10? Could you upload some of it please?
I'd like to be able to pair a headset using its Bluetooth. Should be good for up to ten metres, heaps for cooking in the kitchen or making sawdust in the shed or turning the gravel in the garden.
@@cameralabs I'd be happy to use Bluetooth headset or buds from my local supermarket. They would never produce the echo I hear when people use very expensive microphones in a studio that lacks sound deadening, that's most of them. I don't need high fidelity sound, the sound is not the point of any video work I might do.

This guy's makes reviews so detailed. This review is like an all in one guide. Great job man.👍🏼
Thankyou, that's what I aim to do!
DJI Pocket still way more interesting in many ways. But good review!
can you answer this question? I know that the orientation of the camera determines the orientation of the video (vertical records a landscape video and horizontal records a vertical video). my question is if you rotate the camera while recording. does it keep the initial orientation? that would be nice as you could record a landscape-oriented video and do some nifty motions of the camera while not changing the video perspective.
This is really cool, but would I use this rather than the latest iPhone in my pocket. Don't think I would. Is there really a market for these? That said, excellent review, Gordon. Thank you.
I'm sensing a Camera Conspiracies video coming on this...
Really...?
@@cameralabs - Lol, yes. Kasey Stern won't be able to resist it.
Confirmed!
@@Samhertzog - Yep, and I just wasted twelve minutes of my life, even though I knew exactly what he was going to say....
This reminds me of Sony 'Bloggie' series.... You can do some videos on them on Dino Bytes...
Great video …it’s amazing that one of the best camera companies out there never made cameras like GoPro, insta 360, DJI….it’s actually sad.
What is the max recordable clip length? This thing would have been amazing for filming lectures.
In theory, one hour, but I only managed 35 mins of 4k on my test sample. In 1080 though I'd hope you could get to 1hr
@@cameralabs fair enough, and if the photos are only in 16:9 as well it could explain some of the loss in MP
As per Canon Europe largest photo size: 3:2 - (L) 5472 x 3648, as usual.
wow, only 1hr of filming? that's not good. Hopefully there's a way to mount an external battery and power it via USB-C. But that will certainly add size and weight.
Now that’s some early 2000‘s ass design
I love it because of that!
@@redrosemassacre1 I kinda like the look too.
If that thing could produce a little bit of bokeh I would totally consider it as a webcam.
Canon would have lost nothing using their vixia mini x body design for this camera. The ND filters are a nice touch though.
What a expert review, top shelf as always from Gordon. Going to invest in this little video production beast 🎉
Thanks!
i think it would have made more sense to have the record button in the back cause it's easier to press one button without looking.... and the front have all the controls currently seen on the back... cause you want to see how you look with the changes and not have to keep flipping and change and look at yourself again over and over until you get it right... makes sense ?
no zoom... internal battery... killers for me. bummer. Please try to carry a microfiber towel to clean the lens glass before your shots.. it was driving me crazy.
It drove me crazy too. believe it or not, it's not visible when filming, but only when playing back the high res video files. Same for very small dust particles, you can barely see them when filming.
guessno threads for any adapters on the lens protector that looks Non-removable. not good, if asked,
Gordon, the screen appears painfully small. and very very fiddly.
The record button looks like a nuclear launch button. 😅
Great review as always Gordon - it is nice to see something a bit different in the camera market.
Thanks, I agree, it is refreshing, in a kind of retro way too!
Is the f2.8 a fixed value?
How about photography? Is the camera able to take pictures in raw?
Not sure about the photo quality options, but the specs page on canon's website will reveal all.
Best review from the best photography channel! How bright is the screen in sunny weather? About half, one quarter, or one eigth as bright as an iPhone?
It's not as bright as a phone unless you turn it up to full - which I had to outdoors in Sun
The G7XIII is heavily pitched by Canon to video creators.
Man I’ve always wanted an upgrade to the canon ivis mini 🙌🏾
This is an excellent camera for vlogging. I love the 2008 vibe, reminds me of Flip camera and Sony Bloggie
Yes, it is kinda retro
Powershot N 😂
Another good review, well scripted and concise, yet broad in coverage. Sidebar - Write another book! I got so much of the first one!!! JR
Thanks! I'd love to write another!
This looks decent. Will have to investigate further. Thanks!
Very detailed and informative review. The camera seems to be an all round high achiever. Thanks for the video.
Thanks, you're very welcome!
Can it shoot timelapses? And if so, at what intervals?
Sadly not as far as I know, which is a major downside. I'll request it's added.
To bad about the non replaceable battery. Traveling and vlogging will be more difficult when you run out of power.
Everybody explaining this badboy as a vlogging camera, Canon made this for vlog.can you please make a video about it's photography?
I have no plans to make a new video about it BUT I do have some photo examples on my review page at www.cameralabs.com/canon-powershot-v10-review/
@@cameralabs thanks 😊
It’s not bad this, would like to have seen more low light testing.
Gordon is just the best reviewer such consistency
Thanks!
It almost looks like it's recording in Wide DR mode, like their camcorders.
Whats the battery life like? It would have been useful if you'd touched upon that.
Have they put a product showcase mode in this little vlogging camera?
That really sounds like an interesting camera. When are you going to compare it to the latest GoPro device?
That would be interesting
I truly enjoyed how informative and clear you are. Mostly the quick comparisons you do "with and without" when explaining a feature. Questions how is the ease of use when editing using this Canon V10, are there any comments on editing features? Thanks ! USA
Thanks! Are you talking about editing inside the camera? i didn't try that. But the files edit fine on a computer.
Kind of ridiculous that Canon don't include wind mufflers. I mean, how much would that cost them? Very little I would say.
I think they might in one of the kits. The strange part is they went to a third party to make them. I suspect the V10 wasn't originally designed for outdoor / handheld use
This is the best video about v10, thank you so much
Happy to help!
Thank you very much for your review. How does it work in low light?
This reminds me a lot of those Sony Bloggies that were released in the late 2000s. Weirdly though I think this makes a lot more sense now than they did then.
Wish the stand had a strip of built-in super-strong magnets.
@@cameralabs Of course! Your takes are always spot on.
Compare with price the quality is look better than ZV1F in term of colour of his skin tone , dynamic range and stabilization. And iphone 14 can buy two of this camera.
Can it shoot RAW stills? And does it have any timelapse/interval shooting modes.
Gordan said 20meg stills
It can only shoot JPEG for stills as far as I know, and no, sadly no interval shooting - that would have been a great feature, I'll request it.
It can fit. . . .
How long does the battery lasts? Is it the same with an android phone?
May I ask do we able to use the color filter on Photo Mode or is that solely only available for the Movie Mode ?
I was going to buy the Nikon Z8 but after seeing this review I am buying the V10 instead 😂
Wise choice. They're obviously very similar cameras
@@cameralabs lol seriously though I got $5000 in B&H gift cards. And I own a Canon 6D. I been buying gift cards to myself as a way of saving, when money is in my bank account it always seems to disappear into other stuff 😂
Anyways I am forgoing all this new stuff and planning on:
1) Used A7R4A
2) Sigma 150-600
3) Samyang 135 1.8
4) Viltrox 16mm 1.8
5) MC 11 for my exisiting Canon EF 85mm 1.8, 50mm 1.4, 28mm 1.8
6) Filter Holder
7) NDs and Grad
8) External Monitor sub $200
it feels like a set back in the world of vlogging and action cameras for the price
which one would you recommend?
How about the battery life? How long does it last?
It is depend on your home, using how your video 4K, HD
Division normally make a video 4K 40 minute which is very good,
I will review about Canon V10 very good you don’t need it. Mike just put one side make a video yourself Lakes easy to use
How long does the battery last recording at 1080p 60fps?
Great review Gordon. 👍👍
I'd say if non-removeable is a deal killer, look for something else.
I really thought this was one of your retro reviews!
You and several others!
Thank you for the great presentation in must be a lot of work to do it
Thanks, yes, my videos do take a while to put together!
Will the DJI Mic work without the cable directly into the USB-C port? I see the mic jack, but curious if it's necessary on the DJI Mic.
Sadly you can't connect a USB mic to the USB C port, only to the analogue input.
@@cameralabs That's a bummer. Would be a good firmware update for them to make. I'm also a bit disappointed they opted for a F2.8. I'd have preferred an F1.8 or F2.0 like the Sony fixed lens competition has. F2.8 isn't so good for indoor use.
@@JustinPulitzerTrades yes, and it limits much opportunity for blurring too
How does this Canon V10 compare with the Sony ZV-1F.
Does it have wifi or bluetooth? I'm wondering if it would make a good camera for live streaming.
It's a one-inch sensor, with a full-frame equivalent 19mm focal length (6.6mm in one-inch sensor terms).
I already have on my review page for the V10 at cameralabs.com
@@cameralabs Oh my bad then, thank you so much!!! I really love your channel.
@@ottoreichert thanks! No reason you'd know about my website, but do take a look for additional material there!
thank you very interresting review, do you think it s better than a dji pocket 2 ?
I prefer it
I'd like to be able to pair a headset using its Bluetooth. Should be good for up to ten metres, heaps for cooking in the kitchen or making sawdust in the shed or turning the gravel in the garden.
I keep asking for support for bluetooth mics on all of these cameras, but no-one seems to care
