I'm sitting here with tears rolling down my face. My father introduced this album to me when I was a kid in the 70's and I haven't heard it since. He died a couple of years ago and this just brings it all back. Thank you for posting.

Sorry for your loss John. Your father had great taste in music, that's for sure. May he rest in peace. I was lucky to see this band in Toronto, quite a few years ago. I was able to meet them and they were great musicians and even better human beings. Take care lad. All the best.

R.I.P. your Dad John - my sympathy. On a positive note, my first real girlfriend (I was 16) realised just how good Horslips was/still is (after we went to the Celtic Symphony gig in December 1976 - The Stadium, Dublin), so try to focus on the positive, bro.

I used to be a baker when I was 20. (40 years ago) I took this album in as it was early-morning friendly. I met some lads recently who tell me they bought the album after hearing it in the bakery. It's a lovey memory of your dad, John. As for me, I first heard Trouble with a Capital T wafting out of a music shop in Glasgow.

What a brilliant album. I loved this masterpiece in the 70's and still do. At the time everyone seemed to have 3 core albums, 'Rumours' by Fleetwood Mac, 'Bat out of Hell' by Meat Loaf and 'The Book of Invasions' by Horslips.

This album was Horslip's finest hour in my opinion. It marked their transition from trad rock to more contemporary music. I love the lyrics, the music, the uplifting effect it generates forty+ years on. Truly a masterpiece! Johnny is still rocking and winning new converts to this style with his own band as of July 2016.

Wow!!!! Leo. My mate and I were in Wexford in 1976. We went touring all of Ireland.....we both had family still there....a small village called Athurstown and Ballyhack. Noel and I were big fans of this great band. They came to Canada, Toronto to be exact and we went to see them. My mate lives in the US now...near Boston and I still live in Canada near Toronto and we have stayed friends all this time. Noel and his wife have been back a few times. I have no family there anymore, but I sure would like to go back sometime. My wife is English, from Liverpool and she hasn't been home either. Hopefully someday soon, I will return to the most beautiful place on earth. Sorry for writing so much about this, but when I saw that you spent your carefree summers in Wexford, I had to respond. Horslips definitely influenced a new direction for music in Ireland. It was awesome & when I hear someone playing or a duet playing I can hear Horslips in their music. Pity they wouldn't make a comeback. Glad to say I am Irish when I listen to these lads. Sing & play on forever.

As was Rory Gallagher. Man he was mighty, then Moving Hearts came along in the mid '80s when I first heard them coming home after 15 years in Africa. Heard Moving Hearts again in their return Concert again coming home from the continent. They were something else. You had Davy Spillane on low d key whistle and uilleann pipes, Keith Donal on sax. Man they were something else too. I truly miss the music of Horselips, Thin Lizzie, Rory Gallagher, Moving Hearts. All way ahead of the times but it was brilliant. Oh to have those days back. Cheers from Irish emigrant in Canada. Homesick as hell! Liz

Couldn't wait to lend it out to my close circle of friends for them to have a listen - was more than a little surprised to find out they were not at all impressed. Guess they were too wrapped up listening to more sophisticated pomp, err I mean prog rock by the likes of Genesis, Yes, ELP etc. Anyway, it still gets regular spins on my turntable. Never heard the CD version, but for the vinyl heads here - the original UK vinyl sounds great - highly recommended.

Hello Michael...a funny story to tell you about this album. I was listening to it on You Tube because I thought i lost it. I bought it pretty well when it first came out and had it for all those years. I got married and my wife and I had moved plenty a time since then. I thought I lost it in transit. Just last week she was cleaning out one of our many closets and I was on the computer listening to this album. She called me into the other room because she had pulled out a couple of boxes that had all these albums of mine, that I collected over the years. LO AND BEHOLD!!!!! there's Horslips BOOK OF INVASION, along with a few others of theirs. AMAZING!!!!!!....LOL

Why are and were these guys so good? They had the ability to play over 12 instruments between themselves, create different types of albums and entertain an audience. As to why not as successful as they could have been-there was a lot of musical talent out there to compete against! But they served the local market well from 1972-1980. Actually met them in Donegal town in the 4 lanterns chippy having a fish supper before playing. So the sunnier side of Covid-19 is listening to them all over again.

People ask why Horslips were not more commercially successful. Maybe it's because they didn't slot into any of the boxes. Too lyrical and too melodic for the rockers . Too complex for the pop rock world. Loved them since I heard the Tain. Which is, by the way, IMHO a better album. Less slick, more raw, but that's not such a bad thing in my opinion. Inspired choice of tunes. I wish I had got to see the stage play.

My fave HORSLIPS album... Saw the boys open for UK, March 24,1979, @ The SPECTRUM - Philadelphia, Pa. - A RADIO broadcast of 3-24-1979 of both bands exist out THAR !!

    • @bobl5334
      @bobl5334 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was at that concert.
I was a student at Swarthmore at the time, and I found another guy in my dorm who was a Horslips fan. I was a fan of both groups, esp. Horslips, so we went to the concert.
The sound system was terrible for Horslips. At the time UK had degenerated into ELP wannabes, and had the sound way too loud. UK sounded OK, but Horslips sounded truly bad. The Book of Invasions stuff was particularly sad. Aliens and Man Who Built America worked better with that sound system.
Later, my friend called me over to his room to listen to the radio broadcast of Horslips at that concert, particularly stuff from Book of Invasions. It was great.
My older brother saw then in a small venue in NYC, along with a bunch of drunken Irishmen, and that was a far, far better way to experience Horslips.

Bob L that's awesome you both got to see them at the spectrum. My first concerts were at the spectrum... I'm a young lad from philly, only 34. My ex father in law used to listen to some very obscure music which was constantly on blast... I was instantly drawn to horselips. I'm into prog rock, and am so glad that I was forced (not always appreciated at the time but so grateful now) to hear all these great bands growing up in his household. Do u have any bands to recommend, I'm constantly on the search for new music, I was born in the wrong decade! Thanks, D.

I was considering my 10 favourite albums (a Facebook trend at the moment, in these strange times) and this was definitely on my list. I've not listened to it in ages, as my only copy is on cassette tape, so hearing it again is a joy. And then I discovered that it was re-issued late last year, and so a freshly pressed piece of vinyl is on my way to me. I can't wait to tee it up on my turntable.
