How to clean fiber optic and fiber optic connectors? | SMART advice | Telenco

Pierrick explains how to clean up fiber optics and its connectors in order to ensure a reliable and high-quality telecom network.
The endface of a fiber optic connector can be contaminated in different ways: dry residues (dust, gypsum), alcohol (isopropyl alcohol used in too large quantities) or liquid contamination (oils, sebum, gel, grease, ...).
Several methods of cleaning the fiber optic and its connectors can be used, depending on the type of contamination. Pierrick, our fiber optic network specialist, demonstrates three ways of cleaning fiber optics.
The dry cleaning of the optical fiber allows for an easy removal of dust by using lint-free wipes, fibre cleaning pens or a cleaning cassette. However, the effectiveness of this method is diminished on greasy materials.
The wet cleaning of the optical fiber is the most effective way to dissolve grease. Thus, the telecom technician uses a liquid solvent such as isopropyl alcohol (IPA) applied with a lint-free applicator or a wipe. However, an excess of solvent can cause fiber optic contamination. It is then necessary to operate sparingly.
For optimal efficiency, it is recommended to use the "wet to dry" cleaning method of the optical fibre or its connectors. The wet part allows to eliminate grease and the dry part to remove dust and excess solvent. Discover the combination cleaning process in this video.
