  • Ally Carter's New York Times bestseller series, The Gallagher Girls, begins with this spy school YA romance full of great humor and cliffhangers. I read it at the height of its popularity 10 years prior and rereading it has reminded me why I liked it. It feels like Harry Potter with its private school - classes, professors, and how the students exist in secrecy amongst the regular folk who just think it's a snobby posh school for girls. There's the camaraderie of of hero, Cammie with Bex (super model action star) and Liz (Southern brainiac klutz) which reminds me of Ron/Hermione and Harry a bit in characterization, but mostly in supportive friendship and willingness to break rules to learn information.
I'd Tell You I Love You But Then I'd Have To Kill You, isn't an over the top teen spy thriller like the Alex Rider series was (although I loved it too - just super farfetched). Their scope of work extends to the local town and the mysteries they try to uncover are not complicated like all the histories of former students and the infamous Gillian Gallagher's heroics are. It was light reading, girly and fast paced action. Ally Carter makes you dangle on several possible mysteries and hooks the reader to see how the "will they won't they romance"/ secrets are revealed.
It's simply an enjoyable read and I am so happy to recommend it.
