Hubby and I went to Vivid in 2019 and it was excellent. We live 2.5 hours from Sydney so we stayed for the weekend. There was sooooo much walking...but totally worth it. I think we walked about 10kms each night. The first night we went to the Opera House and Botanic Gardens and the second night we went to Darling Harbour, through Barangaroo and round to the Harbour Bridge. We'd like to go again and get across to Taronga Zoo and Cockatoo Island.
@Rachas🌠 they don't have a camping option at Taronga in Sydney. They have apartments you can stay in. If you want to camp, you'll need to go to Taronga in Dubbo.
Melbourne does something similar called White Night. It's a 1 day, all night festival, art installations, music, dancing, acrobats and interactive light exhibits all through the city like you see here. You walk through following a trail like a really long parade. It's freezing, pure mayhem, traffic is gridlock because there's thousands of people walking around everywhere. But it's extraordinary 🌈
@@evaadams8298 I know, someone from Melbourne always trying to make out what they have is always better, 1 day 😂😂😂🤣🤣 Vivid goes for 23 nights, Melbourne 1 night 😂🤣😂
I’ve been to VIVID a few times. Enjoyed it immensely & love seeing it grow. I don’t go every year because I don’t want it to become the norm. Peoples’ creativity is amazing. One year there was a marine theme on the Opera House & it was spectacular! I hope you get to see it one day. This year I’m off to see GLOW at the Sydney Zoo in Western Sydney. It’s good to change things up 😁✌🏼
With the burning structure - This is a traditional thing they do in Zurich to celebrate the start of spring - They build like a big person structure and they pack the head with fireworks and the quicker it burns indicates when spring will start or something. As for Vivid, pre-COVID, I used to go just about every year and take photographs. I love Vivid. I love the art and light installations. They have food and market stalls in The Rocks. One year I even did The Bridge Climb (climbing over the top of the Harbour Bridge) during Vivid and it was absolutely stunning. I get a bit nervous in the crowds and moreso in this COVID landscape and Vivid could be quite crowded. I’d planned to take my kids in when they got old enough but then COVID kicked in right around the time they were old enough. I have taken them in when they were young but they weren’t as excited as they would be now. I once saw a light projection into the harbour where it looked light a man swimming up from the deep. It was spooky and cool. I know a bunch of great spots to get photos, such as The International Passenger Terminal for cruises for the Opera House and Bridge, Circular Quay train station for Customs House, the foreshore for the MCA… basically though, you can just wander through most parts of the CBD and just take in the vibe and the views. I love Vivid.
I think the original concept of Vivid was to encourage people to come into the city at night and boost the economy at a time when it is getting colder and less people are visiting the city. I have been numerous times, the kids really enjoy the interactive exhibits. I recall one particular one where buttons pushed on one side of the harbour change the light display on the other side of the harbour. Very cool. Hope to see you, Ian, down under one day.
Aussies are SERIOUS abut Partying! 23 Days! We have something cool down here in Tassie in Winter also - called "Dark MOFO". The themes are pretty 'dark' though too... There's also the Winter Solstice Skinny Dip - for the VERY Brave! Check THAT out! 😄
G'day Ian, mate l have seen that light show in 2018 and hope to travel to Sydney this year, time your visit right and your family can have so much fun, cheers, Neil 🤠.
Been to Vivid many times. It's incredible! The last couple of years it was cancelled due to covid but it's back this year. There's always so much to see and so spread out that you usually go at least a couple nights to see it all. There's also live music and shows going on for the festival too. It all started off as a way to get people going out more in winter, to support local hospitality industry etc. To increase the winter nightlife and tourism. Now people come from all over the country and the world to see it. 🙂
I used to work for the Opera House and Vivid was always a highlight of the year. So much to see and experience, but the shows and installations we’d put on in the House for Vivid were spectacular. Love the content cobber 🙌🏽🔥
Vivid is FANTASTIC! I go up every year to Sydney for this and it is amazing in person. You need at least 2 nights minimum to see all of the Vivid light sites as there is heaps of them scattered throughout the city. This year's Vivid festival starts on the 27th of May and runs to the 18th June.
Great video! This year, I'm coordinating with friends to see VIVID by night-time kayak tour from the waters of Sydney Harbor :) It's the next-level way to do it, and I can't wait!
So much more spectacular than Christmas lights or fireworks on New Year's eve. My disabled Uncle loves it and I always feel safe walking around at night with him. You're going have to pack a bag for 6 months when you come. 😉
Vivid is fantastic and it gets bigger every year. It is actually starting on the 27th of May and its a lot of fun. The outdoor stuff is free but the concerts are usually paid which is understandable.
I’ve been most years since Vivid started. Always something interesting to see. One year, 2016 maybe, huge lizards were projected, crawling over the Opera House.
I go to VIVID every year. I love it. I remember the very first one they did, you used to be able to do the walk in one night, now it’s grown so big you need multiple nights to see everything.
yeah the Opera House is an *amazing natural canvas for lighting* (I can't think of any better in the world!?), I _think_ they've only been doing it since about 2013, guessing that's when the tech first became available at that massive level (that's Wikipedia's first mention of lighting display on their Sydney Opera House page). It's amazing how it looks like the Opera House itself is emitting the light, rather than having light projected onto it (you can't really see any other light being cast around it into the sky)
@@Dr_KAP yeah I think there were probably some "minor" light exhibitions before on it, but now it seems they've PERFECTED it (full canvas every shell), its just amazing... I'd love to see a YT video about how they do it
I used to work in the Main part of Sydney City, and on my way home I would see a lot of the installations for vivid. Pretty amazing to see. Never have gone in to have a longer look though, used to be too interested in getting home to stick around after work. I work from home now, and I really do miss the city.
I relate. I worked in the city and lived within walking distance from the office. I think I only made it out twice for a walk around vivid. Just couldn't fathom fighting the crowds after work.
I haven’t been for a few years but I love Vivid Sydney. It’s a freezing time of year to have it but they say it’s to bring a bit of life to the city in winter. It’s absolutely spectacular and I love how it extends right through the city with many displays and also now into the suburbs too. If you can’t face the crowds you can get excellent vantage points just standing on the harbour foreshores and watching a broad view of all the lights.
Being a Sydney sider, I never miss Vivid! They even have Vivid cruises where you can see all the sights from a boat on the Harbour! It’s pretty spectacular!
Looking forward to VIVID!!! It's always great. The video really doesn't do it justice. You need to see it live. It's even better than it looks here. Your family would love it! Especially the kids... ✌️
Yes winter approaches. Had first snowfall above 1200m just before Mother's Day at 6th to 7th May. In Victoria, not sure about NSW probably too as it was cold centred air east of Tasmania that brought ir. Normally mid June is official start of ski season, but possibly this year might even come by end May. But there are prior times that weather reversal changed similar clearly conditions to delay to start July. Must wait to see.
I went to VIVID in 2018. The light displays and projections were amazing. The bad part about it was the massive crowds. It was probably the largest number of people in a widespread area I've ever seen. I would still go there again, though.

It will always be my City but I will never go hame again. I loved the bridge, the opera house and the Harbour. Darling Harbour is beautiful but driving through Sydney is painful. Melbourne isn’t much better but my daughter loves to drive there at night. Adelaide is the only City that was laid out perfectly in a square grid. Leaving room to later widen roads. Years ago even the buses got my attention. When they stopped the front corner with the door lowered to the pavement for wheel chair. When I first saw that I thought the bus was going to fall on us, it didn’t. I miss the trams in Melbourne. There are so many iconic buildings they light up there. You need to go to I think Toronto Zoo at Christmas. Every night they have amazing ice sculptures with lights inside them.. Canada is really beautiful at Christmas and much closer to you.

I had people I know over from Perth when this was on in 2019. They allowed me to drive as I knew how to get around & where I could drop them off so they could walk around a bit. Great time for Sydney & the tourism it brings into the city.
I went to one of these is Sydney years ago and it was packed out, I had my son in his pram going thru the crowd and people kept pushing around bumping the pram. I had to scream out loud multiple times " stop pushing around my son is in a pram " Even to the point my son started kicking and screaming as well! It got that bad i took my son out of the pram and put him on my shoulders and used my pram as a ram! I tripped up many people that night and one guy turned around ready to fight! But realised quickly he wasnt goin to do anything with my son on my shoulders lol 😂
My goodness mate. I live in Sydney but have missed a few. YOU make me feel ashamed :) I have family in qld who are dying to get to see it and i take it for granted. You have inspired me. THANKS mate! Its not bad for a little town like Sydney.

That was the last Vivid and then covid came along. It is on again this year 27th May till 18th June. I'm pumped to see it again . Been every year it's been on :)
It's well worth the trip to Sydney to see Vivid, so many ahh/wow moments , crowds getting a wee intense especially lining up for the ferries. Although definitely put it on your bucket list if ever coming to Australia end May - June...have you thought of a Go Fund Me page to raise funds to travel at all Ian, I'm sure your fan base might get you here...
Yes the crowds at the ferries actually put me off for a while. I hope they’ve got better crowd control this year. There were some elderly people struggling to keep up with the crush & my group intervened by surrounding them & pushing a path through. Unfortunately a few bad eggs make it hard for others. Still an amazing event✌🏼
@@Reneesillycar74 we had to do the same thing with a lady in a wheelchair, & form a circle around her, telling folks to ease off, it all got a bit intense and the crush was moving in on us, so yes they need to work out a better system with the crowds. as you say though still an amazing event I been a few times and travel 7 hrs for it...
A photographer friend of mine has one of her photos chosen to be put on display in one of the buildings...but what they did was enlarge it and feature it as a huge centre pic on the main floor of the building...lol Amazing!! During Coved it wasn't allowed to have Vivid...so this is such a welcome event...it helps bring some night life back to the inner city too. Thanks for promoting it...hope you make it down under one day and check it out.
Hobart Tasmania has the Dark Mofo Arts Festival in June which celebrates the Winter Solstice. After a 2 year break due to COVID it's coming back this year. I'm still wanting to go to this event but my work schedule has yet to work out for me, fingers crossed in a couple of years.
What an experience Vivid is my first one was in 2012 and not knowing, I happened to be in Sydney when it was on. After my first one I went back for another five years it was a nice hop skip and jump as we call it. That is us Kiwis and Ozzy's. I'm a Kiwi that lives in NZ.... TOTALLY ENCOURAGE everyone to go if they have the opportunity.
This was big when I went in about 2012 which I thought was huge, but 2019 blew it away. You would not have time to walk the whole distance of the city foreshore in one night, not counting those remote sites like the zoo and Chatswood and the South side of the city. It was cancelled by Covid in 20 and 21 but I think this year is going to be huge.
I live near Newcastle just north of Sydney and let me tell you it's beautiful but bloody expensive!!! Make sure if you come out this way you're cashed up.. it's becoming one of the most expensive countries to visit or live in sadly. I grew up here in the 80s oh if only I could go back to then.
It is cool seeing displays and artistic stuff of that sort. There was a period in my 20s when I thought they were stupid, but they’ve grown on me again (of course kids love that stuff).
You should check out more Getaway content. It's the holiday suggestion tv show for Australians by Australians mainly about Australia. Lots of interesting things and places that could help you with ideas if you ever manage to come for a holiday.
Ian vivid is something different fire displays, opera house and surrounding buildings drowned in colour but unfortunately it went from an unknown gem in the early years to now its more packed then the centrelink queue during covid.
My family and I went back in 2010, it was their second year running it. It was awesome at the time, they just had the projections on the opera house and two other buildings near by and a couple of streets of food marquees but that was it. It was amazing at the time but Now it’s crazy.

Video and words just don't do vivid justice
My goodness mate. I live in Sydney but have missed a few. YOU make me feel ashamed :) I have family in qld who are dying to get to see it and i take it for granted. You have inspired me. THANKS mate! Its not bad for a little town like Sydney.
VIVID Sydney is amazing!! Been a few times. 2019 was the last one, 2020 & 2021 were cancelled because of Covid, but it’s back this year and we are going to VIVID in Sydney and GLOW in Western Sydney. Can’t wait!!!
It's funny that you put this video up now as the vivid festival starts next week.
My daily commute used to be from circular quay past the Opera House via boat. Saw this every year, every day
That was the last Vivid and then covid came along. It is on again this year 27th May till 18th June. I'm pumped to see it again . Been every year it's been on :)
As a kid I lived in rural Sydney and we would go every year, I loved it
We have a similar light show here in Adelaide. It’s called Illuminate Adelaide and is happening for a second time this year.
2022 Vivid happening 27 May -18 June...
I’d love to contribute to your visit!! ❤️
Been to one of these, and my mouth was constantly open in awe of it's awesomeness 😲😳🥰
Top suggestion... I can't wait to go one year 🇭🇲🇺🇸
What an experience Vivid is my first one was in 2012 and not knowing, I happened to be in Sydney when it was on. After my first one I went back for another five years it was a nice hop skip and jump as we call it. That is us Kiwis and Ozzy's. I'm a Kiwi that lives in NZ.... TOTALLY ENCOURAGE everyone to go if they have the opportunity.
I happen to be there in Sydney in 2018… it was amazing. I’m from Melbourne we had something similar called White Night.
I've been to several over the years from when it started and it gets bigger and better every year.
I live about 3 hours north of Sydney, and I've never even heard of it lol🤣🤣🤣
Ian:
2022 Vivid Sydney will begin on Friday, 27 May
and ends on Saturday, 18 June.
Vivid is incredible, I loved going every year when I lived in Sydney. Burning man is on my bucket list and now so is Zozobra. It Looks fun!
Best way to go is to go to Darling Harbour and get on a Harbour cruise - food and drinks inboard in a relaxed atmosphere...
It is cool seeing displays and artistic stuff of that sort. There was a period in my 20s when I thought they were stupid, but they’ve grown on me again (of course kids love that stuff).
Vivid is finally back this year, Yessss
Uhh I've never heard "Littlies" either lol
Took the family a few years back. Started with a cruise on the harbour, dinner included.
That said, you can see it all for free and it is impressive
This looks amazing! We need something like this in New Zealand.
You should check out more Getaway content. It's the holiday suggestion tv show for Australians by Australians mainly about Australia. Lots of interesting things and places that could help you with ideas if you ever manage to come for a holiday.
great reaction! im going to vivid this year i havent been in years
Get away is TV show here in Australia, it takes you places for holidays etc
Ian vivid is something different fire displays, opera house and surrounding buildings drowned in colour but unfortunately it went from an unknown gem in the early years to now its more packed then the centrelink queue during covid.
Vivid is on very soon...cannot wait! Yes have been, the benefits of being a Sydneysider....😎
My family and I went back in 2010, it was their second year running it. It was awesome at the time, they just had the projections on the opera house and two other buildings near by and a couple of streets of food marquees but that was it. It was amazing at the time but Now it’s crazy.
Sydney is my hometown n it's awesome as..best city in Oz 💖
We have something similiar in Melbourne called White Night where heaps of attractions and landmarks in the CBD are lit up with displays and lights. Really good free night out also
Vivid this year start 28th May. So disappointed as we are staying in Darling Harbour, Sydney next weekend 1 week before. So disappointed we miss out.
Brian Eno curated the first Vivid Festival back in 2009.
it's actually amazing. if you're going to visit Sydney, do it during vivid
I love Vivid, going to Sydney for a weekend with my family as a birthday present to play with my camera
