I've started the hearts and mind book with my 7 & 3year old sons. Really more to speak about the topics covered. I have been thinking about getting the growth mindset workbook for my 7 year old son from amazon by daddilife books it looks great. I also am a curriculum addict although recently have really reigned it in because we are in Scotland and don't get funding. So for this year coming for art we are going to do artistic persuits (the one you have) and science we are going to do building foundations of scientific understanding and I'm so excited to finally feel like I'm figuring it out. We had blossom and room level 1 last year aswell and I was rubbish at keeping up with it. X

We're in the same boat! Lol innsac and we have a charter we homeschool through. I also blame them for all my curriculum ordering 😂 also my little hayes explode the code. He actually prefers "hand writing without tears"

Yes!!! For Kindergarten and First Grade, the best thing for Art and Music Appreciation are picture books! For music I adore the ones about My First Book of Classical Music and the First book of the orchestra or something like that. I also love the DK Art books. For Art instruction I have tried several things but I implement none of them! The only things I did consistently were Usborne step by step books in K and some crafts. Beyond K, I haven't done anything consistently. But I recently bought a book of drawing step by step for my 10 year old. It is one of those 365 drawings and it is fantastic! Super simple and there is no mess. It is totally understandable to feel like you have no time for Art. After just teaching the basics I sometimes feel like I am done.

Those look like great products. Here is my 2 cents on it. I am wrapping up my first year, pre k. I started to get so much stuff, and then reevaluated my goals. I don't need guided geography, history or art for kindergarten. We have some cool kids atlases, books on caves and volcanoes, a globe....I just want to organically talk about those through the year. I have the test of her school career to hit every subject. We are doing a rigorous math, phonics, read aloud and handwriting schedule. We are doing a lot of science too. I want kinder to be fun. Buying something doesn't make the fun, rich, multisensory kindergarten, the environment does. I started a nature meet up on Fridays. No structure or goals, just free play! With a group! That's what is needed. More time hiking, riding her pony etc. I don't want to have so many things to check off in a day that we don't get play time, schedule play dates, time to spontaneously bake something yummy or adventure. You can't buy that. I tend to be a maximalist about this stuff too. But the more I get, the less I enjoy and the more overwhelmed I get. I hope yall have a great year! Also, about the art. I wonder if a curriculum kills the magic. My 4.5 year old watercolors or draws almost every day. I Google seasonal craft ideas and pick 2 or so.

I totally hear you on all of that! We Unschooled my daughter for Kindergarten and it was an amazing year. My son is 4 and just does what his sister does if he wants but I have not introduced him to curriculum. We have been entirely child lead up to this point, which is probably why I am so excited about all the stuff!
For art, I totally agree that something too structured can kill the magic so I’ve definitely decided not to do the subscription box, but I do think artistic pursuits is really cool because it offers a lot of freedom. As an art major I definitely want the kids to learn all about the great artists and techniques.

My first grader didn’t like all the writing required in the Explode the Code workbooks. We opted for their online subscription where she does it all on the computer and it has gone much smoother. So if your daughter doesn’t love the workbooks you can always try the online option.

I've been trying to find homeschooler reviews for Explode the Code online and haven't found much. How do you feel it's working for you?

@@IndiBex86 The way you sign up and pay is a little strange and hard to figure out. The actual program works best on a desktop (the tablet version is a little glitchy). It gives you daily updates on what they're working on and how they do on each activity. Overall it has been working great for us!

I can so relate 😅 sometimes it's hard to get to all things. I have started to plan a loop schedule for the next school year so that I can fit in some of those nice little extras 😊

Hi! We did our first box and I gotta say, prescribed arts and crafts just don’t seem to be our thing. Not enough freedom. But I do think these are great to hang on to for traveling or a rainy day

We just did the Van Gogh picture study today. I have been doing a morning basket during breakfast and I think you just have to keep things very short.

Question, when you buy the artistic pursuits, the cheaper one with dvd video, does it also come with a link for the video to watch online? I don’t have a dvd player.
Or would I need to buy the online curriculum?

    • @EclecticHomeschoolShelf

@Homeschool.in.Paradise I've only used the DVDs, but I think you have to buy the online videos separately. There's no code in the book for them. I decided to buy a USB DVD player for my laptop instead. It's a lot cheaper in the long run, haha.

You remind me so much of myself! I also buy *all the things* thanks to a homeschool stipend we get in Colorado. I also remember my dad, an avid reader, always saying "when you buy a book you think you are buying the time to read the book" and buying curriculum is the same way for me. I buy the idea of using the curriculum, the idea of Charlotte Mason artist study around the table or the idea of hands on nature study and notebooking. We are moving and losing the school funding and I'm actually using the materials so much more now.

    • @ashleymurphy4813
      @ashleymurphy4813  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Lol yes to your dad!!🤦🏼‍♀️
And yes, I can totally see myself valuing these materials so much more had we not had the funding. We will find our rhythm soon enough I hope!

Home schooler in the UK here - this concept of getting funding for materials and resources sounds amazing! I would also be a resources magpie if we had funding towards it - buying everything yourself definitely reins that in! It’s great to have a whole library of materials to draw from in the years to come - even if things don’t fit now, you may circle back and make use of them at a later time, especially with two children.
