  • Upload date: March 15th, 2009. My rendition of Metallica's "To Live is to Die", 8th track on the "...And Justice For All" album"...well, I guess I could just do a copy-paste of the 'Suicide & Redemption' video description I have since the same applies (plus I recorded this just moments after that one anyway), so here goes: a few minor errors here and there, but fairly solid overall (well I was satisfied with it anyway), in any case, probably about as close as I'm going to get it in a live take of a near 10 minute song...especially unaccompanied/with a single guitar (I would love to do the harmonies or a split-screen thing but as most of you have already figured out, I'm not too big into 'production values' lol)...plus, it gives a basic idea of one of the many ways to approach the song with just one guitar (and, as with all my videos, without going along with the actual song as a 'crutch' so-to-speak or to hide mistakes).
    A few additional things I might add: the clean intro/outro is a lot harder than it looks or sounds (especially while standing), and I'm aware that the first solo employs the 'toggle-switch trick' at the beginning of it but since my guitar isn't wired with 2 separate volume controls (it has one volume, and two tones), it's a tad bit impossible to do. (And as a bonus, you can clearly see a 'WTF was that?!' look on my face at about 4:41-42 lol...for some reason a note buzzed weird around there and it pissed me off, but oh well, as the saying goes 'the song must go on'...it certainly wasn't enough for me to stop and start all over.) Enjoy!

    Those were the very same reasons why I wanted to be self-taught too. I think the only thing you have to worry about in terms of avoiding damage to your wrist and arm would be to not 'play through the pain'...a lot of people try to be tough/macho by playing through pain, but that's usually what messes them up. As long as you know your limits and know when to give your wrist/arm a rest, then it's all good.

    I've always loved that solo too, and was one of the very first I learned (it's also a Hetfield solo by the way)...that's a great analogy regarding the 'goodbye to Cliff', that's the same way I felt, and then when the song segues into 'Dyers Eve' it's sort of like a 'time to move on/move forward'.

    Awesome work, man!

  • @ahenn84
    @ahenn84  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @mooocie15 It's a mix of both pickups and effects, pickups are an EMG 60 (neck) and EMG 81 (bridge), and the effects are a little bit of delay and chorus, which came with the amp (Line 6 Spider 3).

    Badass king V man. I love the Jackson king Vs. Great sound in the beginning. 🤘🏼

    • @ahenn84
      @ahenn84  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! It's actually an RR1 Randy Rhoads, but I can definitely see how it can be mixed up with a King V (which are indeed badass too), they're remarkably similar aesthetically, only major difference is the shortened lower "V" part of the Rhoads, and that sometimes gets cut-off/obscured by the bottom edge of my videos.

    • @JacksonGuitarsPlayer03
      @JacksonGuitarsPlayer03 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ahenn84 oh it’s a Rhoads? Couldn’t see the whole body shape. Yeah I’m gonna get myself a USA king v and a Rhoads. Since my favorite guitarist is randy Rhoads... he’s the one who created the Rhoads Concorde by Jackson, I’m gonna get a usa Rhoads and customize and upgrade it to look like his, and sound like his. Also ima get a all gloss black and chrome (chrome being the hardware) Jackson King V. Gonna put Dimarzio pickups in that. Rn my main guitar is my Jackson Sl2h USA soloist that Is all black and chrome (hardware like the Floyd rose, knobs, switches, tune machines is allchrome). I put Dimarzio pickups in that guitar and it is a metal machine. Could play any metal song on it and shred on it and it’ll sound incredible... for Metallica songs it is a beast. I could also even do Van Halen songs on it with a delay effect or phaser and it would sound almost like them. Jackson guitars are great. Always used them since start

    • @ahenn84
      @ahenn84  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nice! Yeah, I got the Rhoads from a lucky find and auction win on ebay way back in 2005, it was used of course, but I figured if I were to ever get one - that was the best opportunity, since new/retail RR1s at the time were $2,000 (I think they're at least $3,000 now, maybe even more, haven't checked in a while), and that was a wee bit too steep of a price range for me. The previous owner had put in EMGs (a 60 in the neck and 81 in the bridge) and as it turned out - that particular combination sounds great for both clean and distorted tones...my other guitar (ESP KH3, seen in some of my other videos, and yet another one of those lucky finds/wins on ebay) has the EMG 85-81 combo, which is alright, the clean tones don't quite have the same "ooomph" to them as the 60-81 combo, but it's certainly a lot better than the dual 81s it originally had (I had the neck pickup changed to an 85, because I wanted to see if it was any better vs. the 60...not quite, at least in my opinion)...the dual 81s were alright when it came to distortion, but the clean tones were horribly weak, so that's why I changed it.

    Thanks very much, it's always flattering to hear from anyone if I inspire/motivate them. I've actually been having a motivation (or lack of) issue myself for the past few years in terms of posting videos, but to know that there are people who are motivated and inspired by them will, in turn, motivate and inspire me to do them on a bit more of a frequent basis.

  • @ahenn84
    @ahenn84  15 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    thanks a lot, I can't remember much of the settings since I'm usually changing them between every video, for the most part I have bass and treble at about the 3 o clock spot, middle at 9 o clock, drive/distortion was about 2 or 3 o clock (but that might have been too much, when it comes to this vid I wish I used a little less)...every guitar, pickup, and cable will have a different reaction though, so you might not get the same results with those settings.

    thanks a lot, I don't have any separate effects pedals actually, any effects I use such as chorus and delay are from the amp itself (a line 6 spider 3 combo, 150 watt version)...the footswitch board I use is merely just an extension of the amp.

  • @ahenn84
    @ahenn84  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    1. Read the 3rd paragraph of my channel info. 2. I'm using only one guitar and not over-dubbing multiple guitars as Metallica does for their albums (over-dubs = thicker sound) 3. Get good quality speakers instead of watching this on a laptop or cell phone, and you will have your bass sound.

  • @ahenn84
    @ahenn84  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @thecleaner084 thanks a lot, and I'm glad someone finally caught on hahaha...but really, even if he meant the bass presence in the guitar tone, people don't realize that Hetfield doubled, sometimes even tripled, his guitar tracks, so of course there's going to be a little more 'ooomph' to the sound...not to mention I'm not using any high tech microphones or anything, so it's not going to capture the full sound.

    @jb12593 thanks very much, no it's the Spider III 150 watt combo version, unfortunately I can't remember what settings I used, I tweak them from video to video and it's been 2 years since I posted this (which is surprising, it feels like it's been only one year to me).

    @JPereira578484 thanks very much, when it came to recording/playing this, it only took a few takes since I just finished recording "Suicide & Redemption" right before this and I felt like I was on a roll because of that, so fortunately I was able to get a take I liked of this too not long afterward.

  • @ahenn84
    @ahenn84  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks very much, guitar is a Jackson RR1 and amp is a Line 6 Spider 3 combo (150 watt version)...more details can be found in my facebook "notes" section (link to my profile is on my channel page), I originally had all my gear info on my youtube channel page but youtube deleted all the info and limited the letter/character use when they changed the layout (yet again).

    @ahenn84  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    thanks very much, I wouldn't say I'm a hard-core fan in terms of traditional classical (i.e. Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, etc.), but I definitely have an appreciation for it...I would say I'm more of an indirect fan, like stuff that's in a classical-style such as movie scores (John Williams for example) or video game music ('Final Fantasy' series and 'Castlevania' series just to name a few).

  • @gruntage95
    @gruntage95 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Mate, I'm 17 and learning guitar on my own. I play purely by ear, I've taught myself how to read tabs. I've been playing guitar now, by ear, for 5 months. It takes a lot of practice, as I still can't play nearly as good as ahenn84 can, but I've come a very long way. As long as you've got determination, you can work wonders,

  • @ahenn84
    @ahenn84  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    and when it comes to the picking hand thing, I move it up because that's where I normally play, I moved it further back before that in order to get that scratchy old record/phonograph (that's the best I can describe it) feel to it as in the album...I decided to do it like that for the first 2 passes and then play it where I would normally play the next 2.

  • @ahenn84

    @aadneds For that part I basically just moved my hand back toward the bridge to get that faded/scratchy sound, I've always liked that part of the song too, it has a sort of old record/phonograph sound to it.

    @ahenn84  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    thanks for the comments, 'One' is certainly on the to-do list for me (eventually), just a matter of when (even though I haven't posted any videos in general for about a year now, but don't worry, I haven't quit or anything, there will be more).

  • @ahenn84
    @ahenn84  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm sure I'll do some classical stuff eventually, I just looked those 2 up and they're great suggestions! I don't know if I should do them with an electric guitar though or if I should wait until I get an acoustic/classical...but we'll see whichever happens when the time comes.

    @ramsessndvlrms I think the main factor is I part my hair down the middle and then comb it toward the sides and back, tucking it behind the ears helps a lot too (so if it does 'break free' from them so-to-speak, it doesn't have a tendency to go forward and cover the face/eyes).

    @Laprevraven No metronome, just my mind, I try to keep time mentally as much as possible but quite often I either end up second-guessing myself or just don't care and go by feel/instinct.

  • @ahenn84

    yes there are indeed, I use one called 'video convert master', works very nice, downloaded it for about $20 or $30 dollars...prior to finding that, there were programs I paid the same amount for which worked horribly, video and audio would be out of sync, or the video was fast and the audio was slow (and vice versa)...not a fun experience, hopefully 'video convert master' will save you the trouble of going through the countless bad programs as I had.

  • @ahenn84
    @ahenn84  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @wowtrax it would be nice to have more views but then again I didn't post for view counts, also I kind of like being 'below the radar' so-to-speak anyway since there's less questions/comments to respond to.

  • @ahenn84

    @MiggeX thanks a lot, I'm not sure if I have tips aside from just to have fun with it and to see practicing as something to look forward to instead of seeing it as a chore (I think that's where a lot of people lose focus and end up quitting)

  • @ahenn84
    @ahenn84  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @viborasolida thanks, and regarding the guitars, they were lucky finds and auction wins on ebay...it's a great place to find some good deals on gear.

    I definitely agree that the books are easier to read/understand, especially things like bends and tapping.

  • @ahenn84
    @ahenn84  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @25ismynumber I'm sure there are places here and there where I'm off beat, it's in all of my videos, I either second-guess myself or I just get lazy/careless...but that's what playing unaccompanied is all about. However, a thing that does help me a little with timing is to lightly click my teeth together to simulate a beat, the only problem is I usually end up focusing on what I'm playing so much that I lose track every now and then, but for the most part it works, so you could try that out.

  • @ahenn84
    @ahenn84  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Charmyzippo thanks very much, it's kind of tough to explain how that section goes, there's two guitar parts that form a harmony, and then another guitar doing rhythm chords. I do one of those guitar parts of the harmony, and in a slightly different way from what online tabs usually have. Although I could probably write it all out and email it if you want.

  • @ahenn84
    @ahenn84  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    thanks a lot, I spend only about an hour a day practicing (2 if lucky) which isn't much overall. I can't really judge how long it takes to learn a song since I always learn different riffs from different songs and never really focus on one thing at a time (although it does indeed take less time for me to learn things now than ever before).

  • @ahenn84
    @ahenn84  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @gunsofhell1 thanks a lot, ultimate-guitar (.com) is where I usually look up tabs, just look for the one with the most 5 star ratings, but don't take it all too literally, I simply used it as a basic layout and changed things here and there more to my liking...for example, the main distorted riff is written as a 5 string bar chord, when all you really need is to do is the first 3 strings. Some areas/sections are out of order too, but for the most part it's a decent tab.

  • @ahenn84

    thanks very much, ultimate-guitar (.com) has a few decent tabs, just look for the highest rated ones. (I didn't use any of those tabs exactly though since there were some parts I did differently or figured out by ear, but they're good as basic layouts).

    @toar4ever thanks a lot, yeah I just use the tiny mic of the video camera, nothing fancy at all.

    @TheJebus12341 I wouldn't mind doing a tutorial if I got enough requests from people, I'm not sure if there's truly a 'right' way of doing it though, since some areas involve harmonies/multiple guitar parts so there are a lot of different ways it could be approached with just one guitar.

    @jordanmahar1 thanks a lot, yeah I have a bunch of other bands/music in mind I haven't got around to yet, Megadeth being one of them...the whole guitar thing in general has been a slowly-but-surely process for me, but it's only a matter of time when I'll be able to do everything I have in mind...hopefully lol.

    I'm not joking man , when you started playing at 5:00 I started crying like a baby , made me thought how good you play , how much I love Metallica , how much I love my girlfriend , how much I love Randy Roads Jacksons and how much I feel like a pussy describing my emotions on TH-cam ! Kudos for you bud.

      Well to be fair, I would think Cliff would apply to the "love Metallica" category, but that's just me. :)
