Love the video. Brings back memories! I was born in wolfe county 76 years ago. Helped daddy in timber & sawmill & dug coal in Breathitt, Harlan, Perry, Letcher, county when 9 yrs old. Helped make many a run of "shine"!
I just watched this video and it made me so homesick for Ky. I was raised in Albany, Ky. and my dad was born in Burkesville, Ky. My three brothers still living there . They live between Monticello and Albany. Also lots of family still there !! I live in Nebraska now, but sure miss my mountains and all the lakes!! Thanks for the video!!
I was born and lived in eastern ky for many years. Theres not a lot of flat land for a large farm, but plenty for truck farming and or greenhouses. Ky extension agents can tell you about producing "Kentucky Pride "produce for market. I now live in central ky (Lexington) lots of flat land here. Farms consist of corn, hay, tobacco and huge horse farms. Winerys are also becoming popular. I say welcome to Kentucky a great place to live and work.
I love the flat land of central and south-central Kentucky, it’s a refreshing change of pace for this mountain boy but I always miss the mountains when I’m away too long.
My family are from Breathitt County KY. They're good ppl and hard working ppl too. Whenever I go from central Kentucky to these parts you can tell a big difference not only land but people's attitude and how they live in these parts is unbelievable but they had to do it to survive. Some eastern Kentuckians are smarter than what people gives them credit for and more out going then anyone you will know too.
Absolutely beautiful. Daddy was born in Jackson County, Ky. in a holler called Letterbox. I am related to the Gabbards and Burches' of Owsley County, Ky. Live in Alabama now, but Kentucky has my heart.
I lived in Mt. Sterling, KY for about 3 years in the early 90's and my job had me travel all around your area. Pikeville, Hazard, Prestonsburg, Jackson, etc... I got to visit every town in KY that had a "SuperAmerica" store in it and I explored the area as well. I know the "SuperAmerica" stores are no longer in business. We used to go to Natural Bridge Stare Park often to watch the dancers at Hoedown Island with Richard Jett. A friend of mine visited us and he, and his mom, played live music at Hoedown Island for the folks to dance to. I have a video of it posted on TH-cam.
I remember a Super America in Maysville, KY. on the way to take my step mother to see her family in Fleming and Rowan counties in Kentucky, then all of a sudden the Super America was a Speedway gas station!
I am. From Pike co And one of these days i will.go back there to RIP.. Till God comes calling me ..but. Its of home to me those mountain's is where I.belone of for its. Of my heart and in my blood. Home is it .
i LOVE that area. I got a tour of Martiki and Pontiki mines a long time ago. I also spent a summer living in West Prestonsburg with the rr tracks next to my bedroom window. I saw a lot of coal trains and I was on the Prestonsburg FD and worked for the Floyd Co. Health Dept. All that back in 1981
If anyone knows of a place i could live of in Pike co please let me.know. iam 70 and have little.imcme. so it has to be cheap but.i.like to be of back.there to.live in.my last day's of my.life .
This video was such a blessing to one homesick girl. I lived in Magoffin county then married and moved away. My dad is Sammie Caldwell you may know him. Thanks for the video it made my day to watch it.
My grandparents were Winnie and Lester Spears from Burkesville Dale Hollow Dam top of the mountain that's God's country thank you for the video the music was fantastic God bless you and your family subscribing
The big gaps in the mountains where heavy equipment went through brings back memories my hubby was a side boom operator for a pipeline co in Prestonsburg
Gary, nice video of the area. I posted one called, "Kentuckys Back Roads" you may like. Filmed near Hazard, Kentucky. I also just posted one a few days ago called, "Coal Mining in Appalachia"
I subbed as soon as I saw you had vids on archeology and astronomy. Also, my family has been in the coal minning industry for generations. I can not wait to binge watch shortly. I am from SE KY. Have a great day/night.
I enjoyed watching this so much! I lived in West Liberty for a while. My families last name was Walter. We still have a family plot up Grassy Creek. My dream is to go back to Grassy Creek and get my plot of land coming to me and build me a little 'tiny house' and living off the grid. The thing is, I don't know how to go about getting the land in my name. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could do? My grandmother left the land to her children, my dad passed away 'James Walter' in the mids 70's, and the land was then supposed to be divided up with his heirs, me and my siblings. My dad's siblings have a part in it as well. A cousin of mine, which I do not know is the one that is in the know about everything. The last I heard, which was years ago is that she was leasing out the property to a farmer and she was paying the taxes on the property. I don't think that we would have more than maybe an acre a piece once it was divided amongst my siblings and our cousins, but that is all I need to have myself a little homestead!! I read through the post and was recalling how that it was/is a dry county in Morgan County and how that when I was 14/15 years old we would go with our friends to the (can't remember what they were called) people that sold it out of their houses. LOL, oh what fun we had.. I remember going up to the old airport strip in Morgan County with friends and them racing, driving fast on the curvy country roads, jumping out of the car at the 'one' stop light we had on main street and running around the car three times before it could turn green... going to the Surgoum festival and learning how to whittle little curly pieces of wood from the old man sitting at the court house. Yes, you reach a point in your life when you remember what makes you feel peace inside and puts a smile on your face just recalling those times of a more calming time in life. I long for my country home......
Bohemian Fern Your best bet is to talk to a lawyer. You will need a copy of your Dad's will and or deed to the property. The courthouse in the county the property exists in will have it. There may even be a way to get a copy online. There is a small fee for the copies. Just a few dollars. I wish to do the same when we get lined out a little better here in Bell Co Ky on my son's property he is not using. I want a tiny house as well. Good luck with your endeavors. God bless. BTW: you may qualify for legal aid. Either way most lawyers will give out basic information for free. It would be best to inquire concerning their particular field of expertise. For example, one that specializes in bankruptcy may not be the best to ask advice from. Just make sure they are a member of the bar in KY.
Born in prestonsburg. Crossed the old concrete west prestonsburg bridge many times. Course that was in the early 50s. Moved out after 1957 flood. Love the video's.
I was born and raised 3/4 of a mile from Myrtle. I went to the one room school there 7 1/2 years. The old schoolhouse has been torn down. I am in the process of painting an 18x24 picture of it. Up until about 1980 I new everyone on Abbott Creek. I now live in Lexington but my mom and brothers are still there.

I love this! I have been to Kentucky but never got off the beaten path into the country & would really enjoy just touring the countryside at some point. I'm from the country in Ms. , beautiful country without Mountains of course, however, when it comes to having "peace of mind", country is cure !!! "Daggin The Line" was the right choice of posting. My family and ancestors are from all over Ky East to west . About 6 years ago too a hike and twisted my ankle and the only way down from the hill was to crawl head first.l I couldn't put weight on my foot . I finally made it down the hill that was called copper snake hill lol...... Took my shoe off and my God the pain and throbbing my foot turned all different colors while healing. There is an old 60's chevy with a very large boulder on its hood.I believe its in Floyd county. Is there a picture of it anywhere on-line?I have been told its been there a very long time and I have seen it many times but I don't have a picture of it.I live in Michigan and no longer travel in that area.
That old chevy with the rock on its back is located on rt. 114 (mt. parkway ext.) As you travel east from Magoffin county to Prestonsburg in Floyd county. It is a couple of miles or so on the left side of the road. Been there many years.

We moved back here because my husband grew up in Kentucky, actually Northern but he could only find a 🏡 that had the specifications he required here in Southeastern Ky. When we meet people around here, we always get asked the same question when we tell them where we moved from& they always say,”Florida! Make more room for us.” That kinda makes me feel unwelcome. &. I was rejected once by hillbilly lady I was assigned to visit recently. As soon as I arrived at her house to start my visit with her, she sent me on my way. She said she didn’t want me there.
Some of these pictures are on the state road fork very close to the Magoffin county line. Several are on abbott creek seven miles west of Prestonsburg.
wow. my grandma is betty prater, she daughter of rhoda holbrook which married callie prater and then roy mullett, so your dad was the one that used to take care of one of the family cemeteries, i heard his name mentioned by someone at some point.
We're farmers in CA looking to relocate and KY is at the top of our possibles list right now. We have friends in north KY but they're city folk so their input is not as relavant. Can you give me any suggestions, warnings, comments of any kind that might be useful? Thanks.
Just looking. I'll be retiring in 5 years. My kids still love in cleveland. I'm looking for something close, eastern kentucky, pennsylvania or west virginia.
South western Ky. had good cheap farmland, Also i know alot of CA folks how moved to kentucky and a major issue they had is that Ky. is a Dry state- Thier for Gabling(Ex.Horse bets) is illegal along with the sails of alcohal, but thier are a few exeeption for a couple counties but you have to do you research, Thanks for Choosing Kentucky

We're farmers in CA looking to relocate and KY is at the top of our possibles list right now. We have friends in north KY but they're city folk so their input is not as relavant. Can you give me any suggestions, warnings, comments of any kind that might be useful? Thanks.
