  • "A Beautiful Resistance" celebrates Black joy and Black lives. Oak Bluffs is the part of Martha's Vineyard where white locals sold freed slaves land in the 18th century. Here, Black folk cultivated their own beach town, a place of black affluence and summer joy. A place where the water is ours. Mercy Bell grew up catching the ferry from Boston to the Vineyard to visit her brother. Now, they own a home together, their first property, their first permanent address, and a step toward family legacy no one can be evicted from. Join us on Instagram @abeautifulresistance. This was a powerful and beautiful segment!!! It gave me goosebumps...I was born in the south (Atlanta, Ga) , I was raised on legacy and generational growth, not just wealth. So many of us don’t know or understand how precious and hard fought the ability for black people to have that for themselves and be able to KEEP it for thier children/grandchildren truly was and still is. While my childhood was filled with memories of country life and urban pride, soul music and piano lessons, violins and college dreams, my children were raised in the “projects”, never having ownership but as I live and breathe, they also know I will never stop until I can buy that house, that land, and set the foundation for their legacy’s

Yes, home is where the heart is. Being born and raised in Boston by a proud family and having fond memories of Summer vacationing on the Vineyard, their emphasis on legacy resonates.

As a black resident with roots in Mass, this hit hard.

I’ve Ben the Island when I was a kid I went The summer before last and it was so different. As New Yorker definitely see how you go to other beaches and feel like we are the others

Nobody else notices that they worked hard and that explains everything. Also, they are now gentrified, for what it is worth. More advice, take any money you would spend on cigarettes or lottery tickets and invest it in an S&P 500 based mutual fund.
