Honestly, this standard is just a brewer's dream. Sure, there isn't an infinite amount of tier one decks, but that has never been the case and it will never be. But the fact that you can build so many competent and diverse decks feels so rewarding. I'm just glad I can express myself like this through a card game and play the game i love inside the game I love (if that makes sense). I've always loved chess, but it feels sorta repetitive for me. The fact that I can build a deck (which by itself already is amazing for me) and twick it to find it's best version, whilst allowing myself to play the patterns and possibilities I like the most out of such a vast card pool and different archetypes makes me feel so in love with the game compared with other strategy games I've played in the past. Sidenote: I know this is a channel that focus on the competitive side of the meta (which I love, I usually try to rank as high as possible without forcing myself to play decks I don't identify with), but I love the fact that you find space for new brews every week. Sidenote 2: just to say that I'm impressed with how many decks you consider tier 1 or 2 (10), with some others right on the verge of that. Plus, the fact that every tier 1 or 2 deck is constantly adapting little changes to address these meta variations shows how powerful this format is,in so many fronts. Again, love to see it. Loving standard right now. Good work guys! (also, suggestion of a series concept : analysing in detail a single deck in a longer video, comparing the different alternatives within that archetype, how to play it and sideboard it, its match-ups and discussing all of it with different players that have played it or played against it to hear how they play and build the deck or deal with it on the other side of the board)
I've often thought of MTG as poker + chess + puzzle + art. This beautiful blend of the best elements of all 4 while eschewing the pieces I dislike in each. I feel ya, it's been a ton of fun to play lately and the sub-game of being able to identify and pilot archetypes that respond to an intrinsic preference is lovely. - Riktus
Thanks for the comments. We used to do Sideboard guides for decks individually as videos but the amount of research and time put into them that it requires to put out good useful information is alot and there's only two of us. In the future we plan on returning to giving these sorts of insights when we find the resources and the team to help us with it. For now we have sideboard guides available to our members. Thanks for the idea. We'll keep in mind that there is a demand for this type of content.
golgari mage here! my big change has been to throw in rookie and massacre girl into the deck along with having a gix plan to gumming up the board with vigilant threats that, when attacking, become a damned if you do, damned if you don't plan for opposing blockers, and makes attacking back extremely difficult. im still on shelly but definitely keeping tabs on archfiend and possibly bloodletter as 4 drops to partner with massacre girl
Okay, so I've been jamming this Slogurk deck. It is super fun to play but almost impossible to pilot perfectly. So many decisions to be made with the channel lands. What a brew!
Something i havent seen people mess with is the cryptic coat and danitha benalias hope.... typically you cant equip your existing creatures with the coat but lets say youve discarded the coat or it was removed then turn 5 danitha comes down and grabs the coat making it a 5/4 unbloackable first strike vigilance lifelink and its important to note that you dont have to have thencoat in your graveyard it can be in your hand for it to etb with danitha.... Danitha is also amazing with reality chip ❤
I played the squirming emergence deck and was extremely confused about a few cards untill I figured it out, you should probably mention this if it's gonna show up in the next meta video: Giving kami of whispered hopes the untap ability from the fairy with agatha's soul cauldron is an infinite combo. It's highly likely that this is the sole reason the fairy is in the deck, as it seems to never be the correct play to put it on the battlefield.
Honestly, unless we see it start taking down tournaments, it won't be in the meta we review, as we stick to the results from each weekend. That said, appreciate ya laying it out.
Thanks for the shout out! Great content as always. Appreciate it fellas. Rakdos Robber is another super fun one. Needs some fine tuning in sideboard. But has a lot of potential. 3 Chandra, Hope's Beacon 4 Decadent Dragon 4 March of Wretched Sorrow 4 Outrageous Robbery 2 Go for the Throat 2 Virtue of Persistence 4 Big Score 2 Mirrex 2 Path of Peril 2 Brotherhood's End 4 Deadly Cover-Up 2 The Celestus 3 Mountain 3 Swamp 4 Blackcleave Cliffs 4 Haunted Ridge 3 Restless Vents 4 Sulfurous Springs 1 Takenuma, Abandoned Mire 1 Sokenzan, Crucible of Defiance 2 Bitter Triumph Sideboard 2 End the festivities 2 Brotherhood's End 2 Cease // Desist 3 Duress 3 Liliana of the Veil 3 Sheoldred, the Apocalypse
Haha let me know how it goes! And any changes you come up with. I posted a video of gameplay on my channel. Went 4-1 in Mythic. I think it's very solid in Bo1 because you have access to a ton of lifegain with March of Wretched Sorrow and double casting it with Chandra, and plenty of removal and wipes. One of your win cons is actually decking your opponent out with Outrageous Robbery due to how much mana you can get with Big Score and doublecasting. In Bo3 I havent figured out the right sideboard yet but I like the idea of "Cease // Desist" for graveyard hate. At worst it's remove two cards, gain 2 life, and draw a card. With Chandra out it's remove 4 cards from a graveyard, gain 4 life, and draw 2 cards for 2 mana lol. @@TheMTGRebellion
Interesting to see the Esper midrange list. I got bodied by something that must have been that earlier today while playing an Urza artifact control pile.
whens the next video out lads? im waiting to drop my wild cards lol! ... on a serious note, thanks so much for putting these together, I look forward to each and every ep.
I’d love to see a sideboard guide for you Boris convoke deck. I’m new to standard coming from commander and sideboarding in and out is what I am struggle most with. Awesome video though I appreciate the content.
We actually have sideboarding notes for Boros Convoke in the communal SB guide doc that I maintain. Just gotta join our membership tier "coffee and grinders" here on TH-cam and then hit me up on discord and I'll ship the link! - Riktus
Standard does feel pretty chaotic right now. Reanimator, Atraxa, Control, Boros, Mono-red, ect. are all doing powerful different things. On the midrange side - I’m not sure whether this is one of the best or worst times to be playing stuff like Esper. As you said getting sandwiched between good Aggro and hard control is rough while still maintaining the sideboard hate pieces for stuff like reanimator and mono-Red. On the other hand playing Aggro or control has those other side of the coin, horrible 20% max chance to win matchups. I feel like the best chance midrange has is being the targeted hand hate deck. Thoughtseize T1 has always been the saving grace of midrange in formats like Modern where the field is so vast you can’t hate on everything. The issue here is we don’t actually have Thoughtseize, instead we have Duress and Dreams of Steel and Oil which both have whiff chances, and also the best midrange color deck (Esper) frequently has issues playing an untapped land turn one.
I'm honestly getting pretty close to considering a build with 4x Dreams of Steel and Oil given the creature density in this format. Might be worthwhile to replicate the old Jund methodology and see how it plays. (Dreams into Bat into Gix is quite the snowball). If you find a solid build, feel free to post it for the Brewer's Corner! Discord is also always open
Hey what do y'all think - I have an RCQ this weekend, and will play Dimir midrange, I don't have the Cryptic Coats - are Jace's a reasonable substitute for anti control/domain in the sideboard?
Cryptic coat is actually better against midrange than domain. Unblockable clock that they struggle to interact with combined with Gix for card draw. Jace is a strong anti-domain package though. Worth a shot eh? - Riktus
Wheres the UW Djinn deck? That deck still feels extremely powerful, it was 2 spots in the top 8 of my RCQ (including me) i chose not to play my top-8 match despite bein the 2 seed, as im not hunting the invite yet but the other guy got 2nd. Its also strong in testing online
From our data it achieved a handful of top 8 appearances but not as many as our tier 2 contenders. It was very close and remains a competitor. We're keeping an eye on it for future tier lists. -MAX
I love azorious control, I feel it is way more versatile than it has any right being. the version featured here, while I enjoyed watching it play in the finals, I feel leans too heavy on the draws and I honestly don't know why anyone would play a three mana counter spell given the two cost ones are so efficient and catchall. but hey opinions are like buttholes....
I don't think we'll see an Eos ban unless the top 8 of the pro tour is 50% Boros Convoke. Even then, it's gotta prove to be more than a flash-in-the-pan. Honestly, my guess is it sticks around as there are multiple methods to hold it in check (Doorkeeper Thrull woot!). - Riktus
Wonder if archfiend will like being paired with that hunted disguise creature cant thibknifnits namembut it gives your opponent 2 1/1 tokens that are easily killed with path to peril draining the opponent....
While I'd like to say yes, my experience in the past is that trying to mitigate a negative effect by structuring your deck to do so only works if the payoff is an instant win. In this case, the payoff would be fairly marginal. That said, if you test and find otherwise, I'll be quite curious.
@@TheMTGRebellion roaming throne shenanigans would be nice too bad archfiend and the dog maker don't share a type at all cause it would have been great lol

Delney is interesting... I'm curious if while roaming throne is in play it would cause delney to add a second additional Trigger. Like we have lunarch vet in play delney and roaming throne then we cast a creature spell would we get 3 or 4 life gain triggers ? You'd have the original trigger on etb then delney grants an additional Trigger and throne grants an additional Trigger but since vet has power less than 2 delney would trigger an additional time bc of throne right? Granting that additional additional Trigger for vet netting is 4 life or cathar exiling an entire board 😆 I'll have to check out delney later
